silent update because they didn't want to have to stand up there and here the groans when neither Fusion or SSD were standard.

money stays in pocket...

Mini next please mr cook.

Ps pcie ssd please

Pps skip the crappy intel gfx and slap something meaty in there please

What was the precious configuration?

I cant see what what is the improvement. I was already a 2,7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 Processor. which is the enhancement in terms of processor?

Maybe this actually wasn't that big of an upgrade that it was worthy of screen time during a keynote. Still, the fact that they only announced this in a press release leaves me confident they have a lot of things for the october event. Obviously too much for the iMac to fit in. :)

I agree, not much for a keynote. Probably won't me much for the MBP Retina - unless there's new display tech or something that hasn't been announced previously.

I guess the upcoming low-end 13" rMBP would have the same graphics as the new low-end 21" iMac, i.e. the Iris Pro graphics. The justification for the 2K+ price-tag is the retina display and portability.

Does anyone know if Iris Pro graphics (HD 5200??) is better than Nvidia 640m/650m (as in previous 21" iMac) or not?

All the benchmarks and analysis seems to point to HD5200 being on par or slightly worse than 650M on gaming but noticeably better in OpenCL.

How does the 750M GPU compare to last year's 680MX? Also how the top 780M compare to the 680MX?

This is just a spec bump. The 780 is an improvement over the 680MX and it uses less power too. It's possible they have overclocked it, as well.

I'm eyeing the 27 inch w/ GTX 780M. The 775M isn't good enough at all for 1440p imo.

The 775M with 2GB vRAM is better than 675MX from the last year

Basically they doubled the amount of vRAM for all models -IMBA

Not quite on-par, but depending on what you're looking at, performance between the 640m and the 650m would get you in the ballpark usually.

Not bad for an Intel GPU, but I hope the rMBPs (at least the 15") get dedicated graphics, too.

Hasn't the iMac not been updated since November 2012? Seems expected it would get a spec bump now.

Does anyone else think that if they are putting in "decent" mobile dGPUs in the iMac (consumer mac) that this may bode well for the rMPB to get a dGPU as well? I can't fathom Apple selling a 2K plus machine with just Iris Pro when their base iMac has Iris Pro. Thoughts?

Doesn't the rMBP already have a dGPU?

Is it me, or does Apple just really love Tuesdays? Why is that?

Pretty good, nice surprise. At this point they should've reduced the size of the iMac or get that screen bigger to reduce the black bezel. Time to go edge to edge!

Mondays for working out the kinks and tuesdays for the launches... The rest of the week is for adjustments, profit and media buzz. Makes sense!

Their timing is always problematic. We just upgraded our college labs to the "new" iMacs in August. Mainly, we needed better graphics chips (from our original 128 mb iMacs). I wish Apple had a summer upgrade cycle so that we could get the newer machines for the start of the semester. The iMacs we purchased have 512 mb. Now 1 gb seems to be standard, along with 8 gb of RAM. By the time we can afford to upgrade the labs again, we'll probably once again end up behind the curve....

Edit: Whoa! Finally a 1 tb SSD option -- for an additional $1000.

I'm pretty sure this is done on purpose to get rid of last year's stock. Then, with the updates, they get the crowd who shops for holiday gifts.

updates.

Dang now I want to sell my 9 month old iMac and get the new one! Totally did not see this coming but with the upcoming announcements on the iPad line they can't crowd it like they did last year.

27-inch
- $1799: 3.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1 GB video memory
- $1999: 3.4 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M with 2 GB video memory

All standard configurations come with 8 GB of RAM and a 1 TB traditional hard drive.

Build-to-order options include a 3.1 GHz Core i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM on the 21.5-inch model and a 3.5 GHz Core i7 processor and up to 32 GB of RAM on the 27-inch model. Storage options of up to 3 TB traditional hard drive, 3 TB Fusion Drive, and 1 TB flash storage are also available depending on model. Why the mad face, surely you'll be getting a better device now?

Better than it being delivered 2 weeks ago and not being able to send it back

I agree, when my workplace ordered me a 13" MacBook Pro back in early 2011, they ordered me an i5 MacBook Pro. It took 2-3 extra weeks and i couldn't figure out why until i read they just started a refresh on the model line. When it arrived, we had paid the same price that we were quoted, however, they gave me an i7 MacBook Pro that was faster and would have cost a little more. You can't beat that. It's almost better to place an order right before a refresh. It's an inconvenience for the wait, but you get better machines in the end. Which is what irritates me about my 27" iMac at work. The refresh came about a month or two after i got mine, i really would have loved to have had the less reflective screen, but it is still the most powerful computer that I have ever had.

Isn't that a bit of a waste? It is a very minor update.
