Can’t Apple walk and chew gum at the same time? Why is every product not adequately upgraded? This is pathetic.

and where is the AppleTV?

The Mac Mini i5, 8GB, 256GB is on sale now for about 200EUR less in Belgium in stores that still have stock. I've been postponing to buy one because I expected a new model this month. I would like to buy it but would be angry if a new model would come out in the next months. What would you advise?

That doesn't even make sense because they're two totally different computers. Is there an advantage over buying a MacBook Air over an iMac, or a MacBook Pro? I got it you can do the same things with both but one is a portable computer with a screen while the other is a desktop meant to stay on your desk.

Why do I want the one that stays just on the desk over the portable computer? Usually I would do this if the desktop computer is giving you much more power for intense applications.

You might not want one that stays just on the desk over the portable computer. Everyone's wants and needs are different so a laptop might be better suited for you. Only you know what your specific needs and wants are. I love my Mac mini but it's not for everyone nor will it fit everyone's needs. This is why Apple and other computer manufacturers make different models.

Why would you want a portable computer if you weren't going to use it in other places, as some people won't? The battery (and battery expansion) is a huge potential point of failure in that use case, not to mention that keyboard failure = top case replacement and servicing, whereas on a desktop it means buying a new keyboard, which is often more convenient...

If Intel wasn't giving me IBM G5 vibes with bad upgrade schedules and if Apple didn't seem to love AMD graphics I would also rule it out as a pipe dream.

Apple uses AMD graphics because Nvidia didn't get their act together on reliable mobile graphics for years, and at this point, the bridges seem to have been burnt.

Intel has been stumbling and seems to be dropping the high end internal GPUs that Apple liked to use which either means Apple doesn't care anymore or that Intel is making Apple angry.

Just as with stuff like the lack of Coffee Lake Refresh-B (for the Mac mini), it seems Intel isn't willing to produce models of which Apple was really the biggest customer.

Everyone that uses a MBP in clamshell should clamor for a portable Mac Mini. Apple could call it MacPod. The guts of a MacBook Pro, but not jammed into a laptop form factor, to maximize speed and battery life.

If you need/want a Mac mini, I'd get that. External SSDs are cheap and fast if you need more storage. The "new" mini only has 256GB more SSD space.

cmon aapl
you could have made user replaceable ram slots more user accessible
the rest is ok - i still may upgrade anyway for the slightly better hardware
i guess you had just one junior engineer work on this "update"
from a long time mm user - still using 2017 mm with almost no issues - even has easy ram access

.. They just bumped the base storage space at each tier. I'd be very surprised if anyone besides marketing/sales and operations was involved in this change.

What exactly are you imagining an engineer would contribute to this upgrade?

There wont be a new model next month. Maybe a late 2020 (October/November) model, but I somehow doubt.

And if this continues with the Comet Lake S then Apple prefer to consolidate onto Comet Lake H instead, perhaps creating a scenario where a thinner all-SSD iMac Air is released (I go into more detail in the other Mac mini thread). Perhaps with Intel's apologies they may have offered Apple a really nice deal on H class CPUs to use in a thinner more elegant redesign of the iMac?

This may then leave the Mini in future majoring on the improved multi-thread benchmarks from a future Intel CPU which may be able to turbo higher and for longer than the S type CPUs.

You make a good argument, I just presumed that Apple macbooks would be reliable and the battery and keyboard won't be an issue.

I'm guessing the real reason for the change is that SSD vendor stopped making the 128GB kits.

There's no "kit." It's just memory chips on the board.

I would expect the 2TB and 3TB Fusion Drive on the iMac 5K uses the same SSD so they should still be in production.
No, those are completely different.

This is not the new Mac Mini lol

It reminds me of the hilarious thread a long while ago titled
“The new Mac mini is surely coming” lol

Similar to what someone posted here in this thread, none of you should buy this model until you’re certain the other thread I am engaged in results in a solution from Apple for some pretty serious problems with this model.

I’m only hoping that this update was really about fixing the mostly Bluetooth and Wi-Fi causing all external thunderbolt or other similar Speed devices to disconnect constantly. And while I haven’t tried that myself yet because I don’t wanna waste the money until I hear Apple has a solution, it’s true that the Bluetooth works about 1/5 as well as the previous models apple produced.

i’ve never before had trouble using Bluetooth Apple keyboards and mice from my couch 10 feet away across the room. And the Mac mini is sitting in front of the TV and not behind it as I would like to mount a thing. So it seems as though Apple really isn’t testing their product before they leave the factory? I’ll gladly teach them what real testing looks like my return rate for the hardest mac motherboard repairs was 1/400 or maybe more.

Or is this a problem of them letting design trump function? See the imag g3 and g4 cube without a fan, the early macbook airs that overheated. The middle era 2010? iMacs overheating because they were too thin. And killing the hard drive.. that were most susceptible to heat of any brand I have experienced. and why did they even allow Toshiba hard drives near their models?

so can anyone try and order Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or motherboards for these new 2020 refreshed minis and see if there’s a rev difference Over the 2018 at least?

ill pay for that info. Thanks. Great thread. Smart users. I learned a couple things from my fellow needs.:)

And while I haven’t tried that myself
So because people post on the forums you assume it's a problem for everyone? No one is going to make a thread about how awesome their Mac mini works without problems but if one out of 10,000 has a problem they'll post it. The 9,999 other Mac mini computers won't get a thread.

Is this a problem with the 2020 Mac mini? Because I never had this issue on my 2018 Mac mini.

Apparently it can be a problem with some 2018 Mac mini models but I also never had any issues. When a product is selling thousands there's always a few that will have some issue. Of course people who have the issue aren't happy so it gets posted on forums like these.

I would suggest OWC knows their stuff. I've been working with Larry and his staff since.. 1990 or so. They stopped supporting a whole rash of Macs due to this issue costing them much headache. So.. it's not just a few people. It's anyone who dares use from the start or want to upgrade their non-upgradable for some stupid reason.. storage. I even wonder if a company would do this intentionally?? to force you to buy their insanely priced internal storage options? No. I doubt it. 10% chance. Getting fat and lazy Apple??

"
The problem stated by OWC and noticed by several people in system info report is under powered ports.

I’m not an electrical engineer but I think any consumer wireless radio would be hard pushed to create interference
Well so much for that theory.

As stated above, the OWC product page lists a bunch of current model Macs as incompatible. Their "sales" staff person I chatted to basically had no information about it, but the technical staff came through with this nugget of depressing news:

There is an incompatibility between those particular machines and the unit, the wifi card inside clashes and causes random disconnects of the drive. Since the cable isn't removable, there is no way to move the unit far enough away from the machine to avoid this.
I asked about turning off Wifi as a possible solution, and he responded:
No, the card still can give off occasional signals that will cause the disconnects, so it's not recommended regardless.
I remembered that the previous (when only the Mac mini was listed as incompatible, and it was believed to be power related) suggestion was that the Envoy Pro could be used if daisy chained via a TB3 device with it's own power supply, so I asked if that was a viable solution - using a device with a longer/changeable TB3 cable and then daisy chaining from it.

His response was:
It's a viable option, but you really need a good 3-5 feet away, so your base Thunderbolt 3 unit has to have a pretty good cable.

So, I bought a Mac mini 2018 and it’s a big disappointment compared to my mid-2011 iMac. Performance increase is hardly noticeable, I expected more from the NVMe drive and newer generation processor.

Other disadvantages compared to iMac:
- Finding perfect display settings is a hassle and the result is never as good as the iMac display settings
- Sleep function on Mini and external monitor are not in sync. Wake-up is also longer than the iMac (not sure if it’s the monitor or the mini)
- Built-in speakers in the Mini suck
- USB ports are not powered when in sleep,
- No webcam, SD slots, keyboard nor mouse included (yes of course I knew that, but did not calculate it in my cost-comparison).
- More cables required so your desk looks messier. (Not only monitor also sd reader, speakers, webcam, etc..)
