I know im going to get alot of crap for this, but honestly come on people. .mac has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen. its right up there with paying for a hotmail account or aol. I like apple and all.. but come on. If you want to post messeges, us a msg board or email, if you want to back up stuff, use an external HD (its cheaper and you have controll of the hardware the data is stored at as well as the security that goes with it), antivirus.. lol, so the sync thing is kinda neat. but not worth _that_ much, set up a network or something. Its only for newbs who have no idea whats good for them.

sorry to everyone i offended who has it.. im just irrated. fire away

</rant>

EDIT: dont be THAT guy and give me spell critiques as a way to fire me down... i know they are there and i dont give a ****

True... :D

Perhaps this is an alterable setting (couldn't find it), but beware that each group you create sucks up 100MB of your 1GB of storage.

Yeah, I figured that out after I had created 5....
Gotta get rid of 2.

I agree, and what really annoys me is the fact that to sync between 2 (local) macs you are required to have .mac, i mean that should be a standard part of the OS!

But the Apple Backup program does backup to an external HD if you want to. That is how I use it. Pretty useful. You don't HAVE to backup to an idisk.

If you don't like it, don't use it. I finally feel that it is close to getting my money worth. 2GB and it would have been perfect but it is cool as it is. You can can parts of it for free but the entire package together is just here.

No, but you have to have .Mac in order to be able to use the backup program, right? By the way, does anyone know, does your version of Backup stop working when your .Mac subscription is canceled?

Hmmm...I got this when trying to start a group:

Storage requirement alert
We're sorry.
There is not enough room in your iDisk for you to be an owner of a group.

You must have at least 100 MB of iDisk storage available, plus a a 15 MB initial buffer, for the group's activities in order to be a group owner. You can change your storage allocation by accessing storage usage for your .Mac account.

Purchase additional storage.

I do have way more than 100mb and with the update, I have way more than that now. What's up? Everything not up to snuff yet? Also, this makes me think that maybe 10.4.3 will be out today and will correct the .Mac preference pane disk space meter (which I think is built in) to 1gb. I sure hope!

As mentioned, obviously you don't need to get it, and it certainly isn't for everyone. However, with the updates, I think it's worth ~US$8/month for people to have 1GB non-local storage with 10GB/mo. transfer. I think for those of us with multiple Macs and especially those of us who travel with Macs, the sync'ing is great. On a related note, being able to access contacts/bookmarks/etc. from anywhere has come in useful more than a few times.

As far as including sync'ing within the OS: I agree, Macs on a local network should be able to sync up "for free", and I suspect OS X 10.5 will have this feature.

As far as using local disks for backup: yes, agreed, and I do this. But having an offsite area for important files is also a good fail-safe.

Obviously, you can find companies to host an external site for less than US$8/month, but not many. You could set this all up yourself. You could get more storage for less money. But... for many people, not just those who are not computer savvy, US$100/year is starting to look much more attractive given the updates.

Yeah, I hope 10.4.3 (or a reboot) will sort that out... I see the same thing.

Edit: my iDisk (and desktop icon) icon has the correct size, but (still) not my .Mac pref panel.

I dont like it, and i dont use it. And i got money in my pocket to use for more usefull things. The parts of it for free such as back up, or however way im syncing workstations, will work when my the internet is down. Online storage is just a bad idea. You have no controll, only trust, and its limited as far as bandwidth is concerned or your ISP, my cable internet is marketed as "always on" but we all know better. Charter sucks too. :p wheres my da** powerbook update. i want to order it tommorow

Sweet update. I'm lovin' Backup 3.0.

So was this the thing under the black sheet in Apple's booth? It's 10:45am there right now so they must have unveiled it.

I had to tweak the allocations on the .Mac site to get the new space to show up.

It's 9:45am there now, they aren't open yet.

Strange, my iDisk thinks it's full and it's still 125MB? It won't let me create a group because of this. Any ideas on what I should do?

Until you have a flood, fire, electrical problem, etc.

Then it's a really good idea.

Well.. i for one save to dvds. and store them at home and my other home :) flooding will not happen at the second place. electrical problems wont happen, and as for fire.. well if i loose both homes i could care less about my emails cuz i would be more pi**ed of i lost the houses. And i guess to refute your statement,

What if .mac accounts get hacked, or they have a massive hardware failure/electrical problem, or fire.. etc.. u get the idea. It could happen anywhere (with flood being an exception). The main difference is IM IN CONTROLL OF MY PERSONAL DATA

EDIT: Electrical problems wont happen as in, my dvds are going to be affected by an electrical problem.

As long as you have a decent backup plan, it doesn't matter how you do it. My point was just that .Mac is an easy way for a lot of people to do it.

And, yes, .Mac could go down - and does. But odds are, it won't crash at the same time your home burns down.

I have the same problem. My iDisk still at 125MB.

im done ranting now. lemme know if the powerbook gets an update. peace!

It seems that a million people can create a group with the same name. Am I right with this? We can each create a group called "MacRumors" and get away with it?
