Wow, this is a GREAT update for me! 1gig is just right :) The groups thing looks purdy spiffy. Just in time for my renewal, too ;)

My .Mac account expires in 60 something days, but what happens to your account if you don't renew it straight away? Does it save the email address until you do renew it, or as soon as the renewal date is up, it allows anyone to register that email address?

stupid question....

I use .Mac for Backup alone. If I update this, will the version 3 recognize my previous backups?

Nice, but not enough to get me to renew at the end of the month. If I download it now, will I still be able to use Backup 3 after my account expires?

At last .Mac appears to be getting ok value.

One Gig space, very welcome. Backup 3 seems pretty good.

Groups - wonder how useful it will actually be?

Wish they'd add PHP, mySQL etc, though.

I had .Mac for a couple years, it was nice but I just can't justify spending $99 dollars each years when I can get 2gigs from gmail for free. Apple doesn't get it. To people like me it's not in the amount of stuff you add, it's in the price. If it were say, $40 a year, then I would give it some thought. But it would nice to be able to sync both my computers and the stuff on them.

nope. you won't.

I stopped my account about a year ago and the backup program still works for me. Obviously, I can't backup to .Mac, but I can backup to anything else (external disc, DVD's, etc.). So maybe it will still work for him.

Yeah Fred,

There is a selection to bring the old settings into the new Backup software. You have to use that selection the first time though.

Good to know, I thought it had some kind of verification.

garageband jampacks?

Is it just me, or did anybody get else get garageband jampacks 1,2 and 3 in their idisks?? Software/Members Only/Garageband Jampacks

Now if idisk were only faster, I could tell if they were the real thing by now..
1 and 2 are about 100mb and 3 is 69mb.

EDIT: Did a little more research and found this on the .Mac Web site

Q: Can PC users belong to .Mac groups?
A: Yes. PC users can create a .Mac ID (and get a free trial membership) just the way Mac users can. The .Mac ID is theirs to keep and use for .Mac groups, AIM and iChat chats, the iTunes Music Store, and the Apple Store, even if they don't join .Mac when their trial memberships expire. PC users will be able to view and create group web pages, send and receive messages, and view the group calendar. Some PC users with software that has support for webcal protocol or webcal://URL can also subscribe to the group calendar.

Seems to address the issue I listed below.

Some nice new features and the increased storage is overdue, but nice to see it moving forward.

One gripe, Groups would be very cool, but you need a .mac account to join a group you were invited to.

While that makes sense for apple, I have no use for the group thing because any group I would form would require many people without macs, let alone .mac accounts.

Come see my pictures online and share a calendar, it will cost you $100 a year. It's free on Yahoo.

I hope I am missing something, but when I was trying things out it looks like anybody who wants to participate in a group needs a .mac account

The .Mac IMAPwebmail is a nice feature. I use it all the time when I'm at work. But .Mac is more, it is an OS-integrated iDisk for sharing and access everywhere. It simply is the cleanest solution and in that it is VERY Maclike.

You don't get it. People like you, most of the time, are on windows, where they indeed get stuff cheaper but in a rougher package. The people, like myself, who like 'nice and clean' WILL pay for it. Apple? Oh yes, they get it! :)

Seems like a good upgrade. A gig of storage is certainly welcome and now I've got no excuse not to update the photos on my website.

What I'd like to see in the next update is a re-vamp of homepage. The layout of my pages (mainly photos) hasn't changed for a few years and is beginning to look a bit dated. I can't be bothered (don't have the time/skill) to design my own - I wish Apple would do it for me :D

I just tested it, you can register for free. You even get a 50MB mailbox with it.

Now is that only a 60-day trial or can you continue using the groups after the free 60 day trial has expired?

From the apple site after I looked around a little
