so if i pop down into the regent street (UK) apple store...i should be able to walk out with a new 2.2 SR macbook?

You may want to phone in advance to make sure, but the macbooks were released this morning (at least online, I bought one).

I wasn't sure about whether anyone had any benchmarks on the new GPU yet or not, compared to the old, but I just had a brain-wave that I'm sure many others had. Perhaps the boost with the new card is so little, it's the reason this was more of a stealth update, as nothing else is truly spectacular about it, so if the graphics aren't stupendous, why draw attention to them...

Probably already been mentioned, but just wanted to put it out there. I'm eager to see a comparison between the two. I know it'd be partly useful, but I'm also not expecting much.

I couldn't find any direct comparisons between the X3100 and the 950, but here's a review of the X3100 itself. Essentially, don't expect too much as far as gaming goes. It does seem to be pretty good with video performance though.

i know the feeling......... COMMON APPLE STORE UK!!! ive been waiting half an hour!!! :(:(

0800 039 1010 you can place all orders there, but watch out for the dodgey accents.

Yes. And Higher Education/Further Education discount is better... hence there being more security around it.

The standard Education Discount is pretty much null now, they only offer it to teachers because people kept ripping it off.
The guy on the phone said a guy tried to order 4GB Mac Pro for his 4 year old daughter.

Do you have to be at uni then to get it or is College ok?

To me, paying double to triple the price for the same pc parts is insane no matter how good the operating system is. Mac mini/imac are worth the price bc their size etc. A base laptop from apple is $1099....that same laptop can be had for $500 from dell. If you want new users to switch to your company why would they want to pay more than double for the same specs? If they don't know you're operating system in the first place, why would they want to learn for $600 more?

I hate it when the discussion begins with Dell being so much cheaper. So what? From a corporate perspective, Dell can't sustain their business model. They have to move a ridiculous amount of PCs to make a profit with selling PCs at that low a price. Look at how many companies have already left the PC space. The same goes with other consumer electronics. In the pre-digital photo world, camera's were quite expensive. Now look at all those feature-packed low-priced digital camera's! But where's the profit? And look at how few of the old photographic companies survived the pricing game?

Dell has huge revenue, but profit is relatively small compared to that. Apple manages to sell a lot less computers, and still make the same profit. Okay, they also sell iPods and stuff. The point is, from a corporate view, Apple's business model is solid. Apple has survived and will survive. That's the only thing that matters to me. With the argument that Dell is so much cheaper, it's like saying that people will move away from Apple and not buy their products, and Apple will be doomed. Truth is, when many companies have gone bankrupt or are on their way out, Apple remains as healthy as ever. And that fact is comforting to know for me as a consumer.

Besides, Apple sells a different product than Dell. Apple sells seamless connection and integration with coupling of OS and machine. Dell sells slapped on (MS or Linux) stuff. And when you don't like this coupling of hardware and software, then buy a Dell. That's what a free market place is all about! I have no problem with Dell being cheap. I have no problem with the majority of the world using Microsoft. But let's stop pretending that Dell and MS business model is the only way to go. Oh, but you secretly wished that Apple was cheap and that Apple would rule the world. Well, that's a different story. I'm just happy that Apple can keep on innovating despite being "small". So the majority doesn't want to buy more expensive but easy-to-use and well-designed computers. So what? As long as enough people do see that paying more will get you something in return, then Apple will be fine.

For the people complainign about the combo drive...

You would expect the low end to come with something less then the high end, no?

Not in this department, no...just like they both have the same webcam, speakers, keyboard, screen resolution, OS etc...
They could just add a slower DVD burner. Which can be accomplished through firmware, the hardware doesn't even have to be different.

Are you suggesting that the Macbook would be too underpowered to run iDVD?
No they were suggesting that iDVD is pointless if you can't burn a DVD. But someone else said you can make a disc image.

Dell makes little to no profit off consumer stuff. Business (specifically government) is where they make their money. I haven't been to a US government instutution yet where they weren't using mostly Dell equipment (computers and servers). It is kind of annoying to be honest. But it all falls back to Exchange basically owning corporate email.

It would be great if Apple were to be able to get a foot hold. The major issue is all the programs that the government runs that rely on the windows platform. The homegrown stuff with no other platform equivalence. Then when you say that you can run windows on a mac you get asked why then should you buy a mac when you already have windows. Vicious Cycle :(.

Relax. Apple never has a big update in November.
AFAIC, this is a HUGE update. 4GB of ram now addressable and a big upgrade in graphics (as far as integrated graphics are concerned).

Check out the specs. They finally included a real graphics card for the mid and high end Macbook just for you gamers.

IMHO a big upgrade in integrated graphics would have been going with ATI/Nvidia southbridge instead of intel southbridge (assuming the video is on the southbridge, i forget if that is the case)

As I've written before (see page 2), if you want the Holy Grail, then wait January the 14th, 2008.
For some of us, this latest update IS the "holy grail" for the MacBook line.

Aluminum casing and no optical drive are absolutely NOT part of my MacBook nirvana. ;)

The Help staff said it was just background maintenance, and that they can't offer me a discount for "Legal reasons".

:(
IANAL, but if it's anything like law in Canada, then the "reason" I suspect is because if you are not of the age of majority, then the contract you enter (a purchase is a type of contract) is not legally binding for luxury items. Yes, even though you may "need" one for school, you don't need one to survive.

Say you bought the MacBook on credit, and it was shipped to you. You would not be legally responsible if you decided to not pay the balance. Companies would rather not have that burden.

Short Explanation Here Sorry, couldn't find a better reference.

It's in the North Bridge

to all those Canadians:

Did apple change the price of the new macbooks compared to the older ones?

I'm in Oz, and the AUD is much stronger than it has been and is now almost equal to USD, yet the current prices are still as if the AUD is 1/3rd less valuable...

(Apple hasn't updated the AUS store yet, which is why I'm asking to see if I can expect a price cut)

No.

For people who are disappointed in how "minor" this upgrade is-- get used to it. It's the direct result of using processors from a vendor, Intel, that does frequent refreshes. Apple is going to be replacing processors more frequently, at the cost of less frequent system re-designs. Apple will be spending the same amount on Mac development overall but the results will be different.

Yeah, honestly I don't care about aluminum. I have to say that the macbook does look a little cheap, but I really don't care. I wanted a cheap notebook. I'd get a pro if I cared. But I definitely wouldn't mind ditching the optical drive to make it thinner. I barely ever use a cd/dvd on my imac let alone how much I'll use it on a laptop. Having a usb/firewire extrenal optical drive would be money. But, oh well. SO Happy with my SR macbook :D

The new Macbooks are up on the UK store, still the same prices!

Just look at the conversion price for the UK and US store.

Configuration 1
$1,099 (£527)
Actual UK price
£699 ($1456)
Difference
£172 ($358)

Configuration 2
$1,299 (£623)
Actual UK price
£829 ($1726)
Difference
£206 ($429)

Configuration 3
$1,499 (£719)
Actual UK price
£949 ($1,976)
Difference
£230 ($479)

It’s around 25% more expensive in the UK then the US. Ok I understand there is going to be difference due to taxes but £172 ($358) difference in price just for the base model, it’s just crazy!

Dang, well then. The x3100 is the best integrated graphics solution for a Mac thus far. Supposedly there is going to be a new integrated GPU from Intel (other than Larabee) comming out when Montevina is released. I dunno how true that is. It would be great if they got Larabee in the Macbooks.

Q&a

1. FOREIGN PRICING

Yeah, the price differences _really_ suck.
I'm in sweden and using oandas currencyconverter here are the specs for my planned purchase.

2.2 White MB, 250GB, 2GB RAM
In Sweden $2,411.18
In US $1,674.00

Ok, so we've got VAT 25%: Then it'll add up to
US plus VAT $2,092.50

So $800 or $300 depending on how you see it.

I could friggin just aswell buy a trip to San Fransisco and pick the MacBook up there and still come out on top :p

2. NON-US KEYBOARDS AVAILABLE INSTORE IN THE US?

Which brings me to a question: Do any stores in the US sell MAcBooks with non-english keyboards? More specifically: What are the chances of picking up a MB with a Swedish keyboard in the US? Otherwise..what the hell..been thinking about ditching those three extra characters anyway. To hell with em :)

3. SOUND

I'm a musician so i'm pretty dependent on a good sound card. Of course i will use an external Firewire Sound Card at home, but i still want to be able to edit and mix stuff on the go without my projects freezing and messing up when i open em. So are there any differences with the new MB? Better? Worse? Any musicians out there? Comments?

Right now im using a crappy three y old single core 3,4 Mhz Siemens so of course anything will be better. But i don't want to mess up with my first MAC purchase. Thinking about waiting for next gen (LED, maybe lighter etc) but i feel like i've waited long enough just for this bump. And i _do_ like the white color. Would go well with the YAMAHA HS-50 monitirs, the WD PASSPORT 250 GB WHITE, the TC ELECTRONIC KONNEKT-8 sound card and the MILAB DC-196 microphones. (All the stuff are white if ya didnt figure :p )

But of course, then i'd have to sell almost everything i own.
