well, let me tell you... this is a new product that is selling for $200 more (per model) in Canada than in the USA, when the canadian dollar is worth more... figure that one out...
You should see how cheap gasoline is here in Kuwait. The SAME GAS they charge 5 times more for in the US!!! ;)

I think I'll be soldiering on with my last-generation iBook for a few more months, it's more than good enough for what I'm using it for now. The MacBooks are terribly tempting though, but I just cannot justify it.
I really liked my last-gen 12" iBook. Intel+Parallels is what swayed me to the first-gen MacBook. (something about being able to switch between OS X, linux, freebsd, and solaris x86 that got my geek going) ;)

Well I guess someone didn't know the Free Trade Agreement applies to Electronics/Computer Equipement as well.

just because there is free trade doesn't mean there is no overhead for doing business in a foreign country. seriously. we cross the border to shop in canada all the time. do the same if it bugs you so much. maybe talk to our govt. about giving us free healthcare.

That's rubbish. And don't whinge to us about health care. It isn't free at all. It's free if you don't pay any taxes.

well then start your own UK based computer company. or don't buy apple products.:)

furthermore, i don't "whinge," whatever that means. Taxes are taxes. I pay taxes here too. I don't have government sponsored health care. Even taking taxes into consideration, health care in the US, health care on par with that of countries like the UK, Canada, Sweden...is prohibitively expensive.

I dont think that it should make a difference, as I think the macbooks are produced in Suzhou (China).

they are still designed in california, developed here...R+D...all paid for with, US Dollars, regardless where they are shipped from. I don't think the price difference has much to do with shipping at all. It's the cost of doing business in foreign countries, the overhead if you will...the licenses needed to advertise there, the licenses needed to sell computer/wireless products...etc. etc. etc. Even with free trade, these things don't just go away.

Wooooooooooooooo!!!!!

2.2 White MB, 250GB, 2GB RAM
In Sweden $2,411.18
In US $1,674.00

Ok, so we've got VAT 25%: Then it'll add up to
US plus VAT $2,092.50

So $800 or $300 depending on how you see it.

uhh i see it as 300, any objective person would. apple has no control over how much you pay in tax, and makes no money off the VAT. sales tax (as we call it in the US) is in the 6-10% range. some states don't even have sales tax, which I consider asinine, because it punishes the poor while helping the rich.

does anyone know if i buy a mac in the states, would i have to declare and pay duty upon returning to Canada?

its outrageous that up in Canada, the macbooks are still $200+ more expensive for the exact same machine, even though our dollar is worth 7 cents more then USD

There isn't one, and we've been through all this already with Macmanus in this thread regarding pricing.

There are a lot of factors besides just basic hardware that differentiates a Mac from a PC or Hacintosh. Too many to list. :)

Oh... Thanks for the info.

Now that my hopes for a cheap laptop have been dashed, I'm getting ticked off at all those people (falsely) claiming there are "identical" PC laptops for half the price of a MB

These people would probably consider a Yugo fitted with a BMW engine to be equivalent to a BMW

Maybe you can get Milberg Weiss to take on your case! I believe you entered into a contract that clearly stated that custom orders are not returnable. Once you clicked "I agree" you are bound by what is in the contract.
It sucks, but that is why one should ALWAYS read the contract/agreement before signing/clicking.

did u join in nov 2007 just so you could answer my post, you jerk?

Hardware is not competitive. Integrated graphics, no DVD-RAM, no card reader, no ExpressCard slot, no modem, low resolution, combo drive, overpriced.

refer to my quote yesterday

 i would have liked that 200Gb HDD and probably would have spent the extra $$$ getting 2.6 CPU

it is now its saturday and im STILL waiting for my Leopard CD to go with this OLD MBP that I haven't even used yet. looks like it will be at least monday b4 i can install all my software and do some work. VERY UNHAPPY APPLE.

After waiting for 6 months, I finally purchased my first mac! At first I was waiting for Leopard. Then, with the update in sight, I decided to wait for that too. So, when it was announced yesterday, I had to buy. I bought the black macbook with an upgraded 2g of ram. So far it has been great! The speed of this thing is incredible.

Thanks to macrumors, I have become a very educated mac user!

Solid state drives in Macbook - Are there any updates to the rumor?

There was a rumor a while back that Apple would release a Macbook pro which would have a solid state drive. This would have a major impact on power consumption and therefore extend battery life dramatically.

No duty, but you'll pay taxes again (in addition to US taxes).

Of course you have to declare, unless you want to spend a few hours thinking about the error while they decide what to do with you, and then if they let you cross again spending a few hours each time. Fraud is dealt with seriously.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pissed right now. My MBP arrived 3 days ago (minus leopard). I rang Apple to see if I could get an upgrade or refund. They said even though the cooling off period is 10 days, I cannot return mine because it was a CUSTOM order. I chose the high-res screen and 7200rpm HDD. So I havent even used the computer yet. Im waiting for them to send me Leopard now..... I just spent $4000 on this machine, was wanting to get top of the line and it is already 2nd best and I havent even used it.

I would pay the extra to get the 2.6Ghz

I went to a local Apple store before placing my order and asked a sales person if I should wait another week or 2 in case Apple updated their computers with Leopard. He said "DEFINITELY NOT, THERE WILL BE NO UPGRADE BEFORE JANUARY". He also convinced me to order online.

Might I add that my MBP was not due to arrive until Nov 6 - 11th. They shipped it early. I can't express how upset I am.

And they say there is nothing I can do about it.

This makes no sense. Even though you get burnt for a custom order, you state that you would again custom order.

The gas prices part of your post literally made me laugh out loud.

I'll chime in and say a friend of mine has been waiting for SR/Leopard in the Macbooks for 6 months. He'll be placing his order soon and maxing out the RAM to 4 Gb from a 3rd party. He is perfectly happy with this update. It's also his first Mac. Only took me 10 years to finally convince him!

He does a lot of stuff from the command line (latex, emacs, etc).
