just because there is free trade doesn't mean there is no overhead for doing business in a foreign country. seriously. we cross the border to shop in canada all the time. do the same if it bugs you so much. maybe talk to our govt. about giving us free healthcare.

It certainly is not free!!

There is definitely overhead in foreign countries. But how foreign is Canada, really?

It's always been a little cheaper to buy in the states. Now, it's A LOT cheaper.

FINALLY

After months of pestering you guys with various questions and what-not, I've just clicked the "Confirm Order" button on the apple website.

Im chuffed. I cant believe Im to be a fellow mac-man this time on Mon (hoefully) :p

My brand new white macbook should be arriving next Monday!!!!!!

Thanks for all your help guys :) Though Ill probs be calling on you again soon :p

Not fair!!! I ordered but it says deliver by a week later. DAMN
Why do you get the priviledge across the pond but not north of the boarder?!

well then start your own UK based computer company. or don't buy apple products.:)

furthermore, i don't "whinge," whatever that means. Taxes are taxes. I pay taxes here too. I don't have government sponsored health care. Even taking taxes into consideration, health care in the US, health care on par with that of countries like the UK, Canada, Sweden...is prohibitively expensive.

oftopic.but all the citizen in us are more then all those countries togheter so it's not wonder us have "bad healthcare"...ore not..depends how you see it..

does anyone know if i buy a mac in the states, would i have to declare and pay duty upon returning to Canada?

its outrageous that up in Canada, the macbooks are still $200+ more expensive for the exact same machine, even though our dollar is worth 7 cents more then USD

Now I get it, Canadians are a bunch of:
cry baby bloggers.jpg

:D

Oh yea... that's right. So I guess when the value of the US dollar was ~10% than the canadian dollar, they just decided to up the prices by ~10% in canada and swallow all the overhead costs themselves. Wow. Apple is so generous to those who live with polar bears in igloos.

And now that the canadian dollar is worth ~5% more than the us dollar, they figured out the overhead to do business in canada is about ~15%. Yea, that makes sense...

I wonder when the next update could be possible...

Since theres been so much talk about the things that were not happening (slim aluminium, strange thing about touchpad), its quite clear that there is something about to come at a later date. MacBook Pro-updates for Penryn will come propably on MacWorld'08.
Additionally, either they will introduce a small Pro (which then would not be "priced extremely aggressively") or have a fair upgrade for both MacBook and Pro with Penryn for Pro & alu for MacBook - while the "strange thing about the trackpad" will appear on both.

Just my thoughts.

Easy everyone, I've met some fine Canadians (with the exception of my Ex), no reason for hate (and they don't like in Igloo's). I'm still bitter that our dollar is weaker, I can't freakin' believe it. The last time I was in CAN, our dollar was so strong my friends and I used to refer to CAN $ as "monopoly money". I guess karma's a B**** lol.

it is now its saturday and im STILL waiting for my Leopard CD to go with this OLD MBP that I haven't even used yet. looks like it will be at least monday b4 i can install all my software and do some work. VERY UNHAPPY APPLE.

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Why don't you sell your MBP in a forum for a slightly lower price, and get a new one? From your words, it seems like it would worth it for you...

We refer to our own money as "Monopoly Money" too, so no offense taken.

I mean, common, look at it!

The other true reality for us Canadians is the reason our dollar is so high is because of how poor the US's economic situation is.

I hope the new g machines will ignite Linux, then I can switch.
Apple's hardware is pathetic.

Not meaning to hijack the thread but once you've placed an order, can you edit it without cancelling the whole thing?
I picked the single iWork '08 but I think for an extra £14 I'll get the multiple ones.
Thanks.

Stop whining Canadians! It's still a whole lot more cheaper than other parts of the world if you look at exchange rate only! Also, exchange rate is a big risk in international business, and I'm sure there have been times when the Canadian Macs have been cheaper because of exchange rate fluctuations!

I currently live in Canada, and I'm looking into getting a new MBP (again). I have the option of buying it in Canada for CAD 2799+ tax (roughly CAD 3200) or USD 2499+ tax (roughly USD2670 w/7%).

Or I could just get it back home in Norway, for

NOK 20990 = USD 3900 or CAD 3600

So a CAD400 difference between a Norwegian MBP and Canadian, and a a whole Macbook US$1230) difference between the price in the US and Norway...

Should I start complaining that the discrepancy between Norwegian and American prices are too high? After all, the US is only a flight away... Or I could go to another European country and still find the same price differences, whether it's in pound or euros.

If you want the US price, get rid off the Canadian dollar and there you go!

(However, remember to take into account that your money is then worth nearly 0 outside Canada/US...Along with another huuuge list of advantages/disadvantages)

Has anyone got a new macbook? How does it handle leopard with all the eye candy?

Got one last night. White 2.2GHz.
Came with Leopard pre installed, thought the funny part was - they still put in the Tiger Discs.

Works perfectly. I already have most of my apps running including MS Office, adium, etc. Installed Fusion as well and have the WINXP loaded.

The only problem was, when I start installing stuff onto the VM, it nearly beats the laptop to death. That's the problem with 1GB. Will get more in a few weeks.

Otherwise, worked perfectly.

New UK MacBooks

Not sure if anyone's posted this yet.
But on the UK store, macbooks are now advertised as "New Macbooks with higher speeds" and other **** like that.
So i think that these updates are all we're getting.
What're people thinking?

Picked up a black book this a.m. for the wife. seems to run very well and actually seems to play back ripped 1080 HD movies via HDMI smoother than my Macbook pro!

Liking leopard alot.

i thought about that. i can only get one laptop per year with my education discount. i would like to see if apple will upgrade the hard-drive with me paying for parts only.... i know it's a long shot, but hey.......

This makes no sense. Even though you get burnt for a custom order, you state that you would again custom order.

of course i would. but i would order it through the store that told me there definitely wouldnt be any updates. and hopefully next time i wont have time constraints (such as needing one before going overseas) so i can buy immediately AFTER an update. i was waiting since dec last year to buy - i am patient, even though im grumpy.

AND... the HD screen is also CUSTOM with the 17" MBP. So I guess that means everyone I have spoken to who owns a 17"MBP has also ordered custom. from where i stand it seems like a LOT of people could have easily been in the same situation as me.

ALSO... i would have waited this time for another couple of weeks (after leopard release) but figured i was safe (i honestly believed there was a 14day cooling off period). now i have learnt something and hopefully some of you reading this have learnt about apple's stance on returning custom orders. next time (in another 3 or 4yrs) i will be wiser, hopefully.

im just really disappointed with apple. i feel like they shipped my order a week early to get away with me not choosing a bigger hdd. (i hope im wrong - i know it's far-fetched) and also the fact that they shipped it with TIGER on the 31st October really gives me the *****s too. that was really LAME.

How did you purchase your laptop?

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pissed right now. My MBP arrived 3 days ago (minus leopard). I rang Apple to see if I could get an upgrade or refund. They said even though the cooling off period is 10 days, I cannot return mine because it was a CUSTOM order. I chose the high-res screen and 7200rpm HDD. So I havent even used the computer yet. Im waiting for them to send me Leopard now..... I just spent $4000 on this machine, was wanting to get top of the line and it is already 2nd best and I havent even used it.

I would pay the extra to get the 2.6Ghz

I went to a local Apple store before placing my order and asked a sales person if I should wait another week or 2 in case Apple updated their computers with Leopard. He said "DEFINITELY NOT, THERE WILL BE NO UPGRADE BEFORE JANUARY". He also convinced me to order online.

Might I add that my MBP was not due to arrive until Nov 6 - 11th. They shipped it early. I can't express how upset I am.

And they say there is nothing I can do about it.

If you used AMEX, you might be able to force a refund based on your non-satisfaction with your purchase, regardless of the custom order policy. VISA and MasterCard often offer similar programs. If all else fails, there's always ebay.....
