I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pissed right now...I just spent $4000 on this machine, was wanting to get top of the line and it is already 2nd best and I havent even used it..

Are you pissed because the computer you ordered is no longer as useful as it was or because you lost bragging rights? I know it's the latter. Your laptop still is "top of the line" and will still fulfill your needs. That argument has grown old (hear it here all the time..."damn Apple for upgrading the iMac" for example).

I would be upset about Leopard since that would force you to spend more money and is just plain stupid on their part.

Enjoy your new Mac, I'm sure it still is sweet.

did u join in nov 2007 just so you could answer my post, you jerk?

Jerk? How dare you call me a jerk! I'm no jerk. I'm much worse than a jerk, I'm an Attorney.
I didn't join just to answer your post, I joined so I could answer two (or more) of your posts.
Really though, you did enter into a contract with Apple that makes it clear that special order computers are not returnable. Sack up and kick yourself, not Apple, for your actions.
Now if you will excuse me, I have an ambulance to chase.

im truly sorry for calling u a jerk - i was really angry. i thought there were a few attorneys getting around in this forum.

i dont kick myself. i dont consider what i ordered "special".

its partly because i lost bragging rights. and you are right it is still useful and i am excited to be able to use it when leopard arrives. (it only took apple one day to ship the computer, but so far its been a few with no leopard disk........). the main thing is im annoyed about the process and i just feel like it is wrong. i honestly would have waited another 2 weeks... blah blah.
and a bigger 7200rpm hdd would have been really really handy. im travelling overseas and carrying extra drives is not ideal... i write music so i need a lot of space. true the 2.6Ghz in comparison to 2.4Ghz is negligable. i was thinking about resale value, not what the machine can do.

The other true reality for us Canadians is the reason our dollar is so high is because of how poor the US's economic situation is.

and we have one person to thank for all that, but I won't turn this into a political discussion (coughcoughbushcoughcough) :p

Cult-O-Mac

I have been thinking about purchasing a MacBook for approx 14 days.... I was getting ready to purchase when I came across this forum....

... by holding off a few days after reading here about a possible upgraded version, I am now able to purchase the upgraded MB. Thank you for helping me to decide to wait a few days/weeks.

But there is NO WAY I am going to wait another 6 months wondering if they next version is better.

If I go into the depths most of you people go to, I would NEVER end up buying becasue you are always holding off for the "new version" which seems to be released every 6 months.

They released the upgraded version.... so buy it already!

If you keep waiting for the new version all the time, you might miss out on what is great with the current version. In fact... you might even luck out and get a version that people talk about years to come. Imagine when they do release an aluminum MB and it doesnt perform the way you want it to (hopefully it does, though) and all the people will talk about is how great the first Santa Rosa MacBooks were and how they should have kept that one instead of upgrading.

Love the one you're with.

i wish there was a MBP rumor :( i read this every day

It certainly is not free!!

There is definitely overhead in foreign countries. But how foreign is Canada, really?

It's always been a little cheaper to buy in the states. Now, it's A LOT cheaper.

That was a joke, right?? I mean, Canadians get their stereotypes of the US from somewhere (here).

For video recording/editing, FireWire is still king.

The USB 2.0 vs. FW800 is another example of the MHz myth. Although similar on paper in burst rate, most RW tests show that the sustained throughput of FW800 is much higher.

So the "victory" of USB 2.0 vs. FW800 is another technological tragedy akin to the death of Betamax.

Man, I'm glad you said this. I can't believe someone said USB 2.0 is better than firewire. Not even better than firewire400!!

If you are editing, firewire is the way to go. USB...get real!

In the macbook point of view i can understand..
but regarding the pro -if you know apple would release a 2.8 penryn any moment you don't just hit the gun when it comes with 2.6 and a "slick" 250$ penalty for upgrade..

Off-topic but.... Betamax died because it sucked. Yes, it might have had better picture-quality. But you could record a full-length movie on a VHS-tape, whereas with Betamax you had to change sides on the tape in the middle of the movie, and that meant disrupting the recording for 10 seconds or so. It also made un-attended recording impossible.

I think you're talking about V2000, not betamax. Betamax tapes don't flip over and can record 6 hours (at slow speed) just like VHS.

Another update soon?

Apple usually updates roughly every 6 months but this might not be considered an update. The only stat that changed on the simplified info sheet is from 2.16 ghz to 2.2 ghz. Everything else is too technical for laymen. Makes me think there might be an official update sometime before 6 months.

You don't consider Santa Rosa an update? It's a completely different and much better architecture than the previous MB.

Yes,the higher RAM ceiling alone can significantly increase the MacBook's speed, even with little change in clock speed. And the graphics are, if not great, at least considerably better than they were. Add to that the improved power management of SR, and you have a winner of a consumer notebook.

Hey guys,
I just placed my order with Apple Canada. 2.2 white model, no upgrades. I added a mini DVI to DVI adapter at the same time as the order and now it looks like the computer is labelled as CTO = ?? Custom to order? Does this mean that if the computer needs to go back for whatever reason I won't be able to return it because of a little video adapter?
Thanks

last point of doubt...

Monday I will go buy myself one of these new SR MB's.. (finally!! OH YEAH  )

now my only problem is if I would take the white or the black one..
the reason for my doubt is the "yellowing" issue on the trackpad and place where you rest your wrists on the white macbook that I read about a lot

My question: is this still an issue or did apple resolve this in the new product line? I know this topic has been discussed a lot but I don't seem to find more recent info about this..
is it really this hard to keep the white one clean?

I really don't feel like paying 200€ more just for the black color...

btw I'll go for the 1GB option and then update is myself with some crucial RAM (look at the price difference for 4GB!)
anyone had a good or bad experience with this? I don't see any real good reason for buying the RAM from apple! Or am I wrong?

thanks a lot for your help!

EDIT: I created a new thread for this.. thanks

Yeah im soooooooooooooo dissapointed. Whatever happened to the aluminun casing..Grrrrrr:(

I can't help but laugh at how so many Mac users care more about worthless cases than they do what's inside those cases (aluminum can dent you know; some of us PREFER to NOT have aluminum cases; they also don't do WIFI as well). Meanwhile, the Macbook FINALLY gets 3D graphics that aren't 2 computer centuries old (only 1 century now; at least it can run modern T&L games) and people are like "Yawn. Where's the aluminum case dammit?" It's unreal. Hey, why don't we all use speak and spells and put them in drilled aircraft grade titanium cases and look ultra cool as we pull the string on the back and it tells us how to spell MILK?

Give me function over form any day. The biggest disappointment I see is that stupid combo drive on the $1100 special. If I have to dish out $1500 to get a nicely loaded Macbook, I have to ask myself if it isn't worth it to spend a few hundred more and just buy a Macbook Pro. Considering it's faster than iMacs for gaming (unbelievable IMO, but there you go), maybe it's worth it.

Congratulations, you are a finalist for the "whiniest comment ever" award. Here's hoping you get it!

Apple allows you to upgrade your computer for what they deem to be an acceptable price. They also offer a way to make the computers cheaper if you don't need 256mb vram, or a superdrive.

And you just won the Fanboy of the year award for the most worthless comment ever.... Why do you think anyone CARES if you think his post is whiny for goodness sake!? This is exactly the kind of post that makes me ask myself why I bother reading any kind of Mac forums. It drives me crazy to read endless "Don't you talk bad about Apple. Steve is God!" type posts....

This laptop could be so much more with a dedicated video card (even a low-end one). Apple is amazing in that they can offer the BEST OS ever and force you to use it on overpriced and/or outdated hardware and their fans LOVE them for it. I guess this is how George Bush got elected too....

Then you're clearly clueless. Find me a laptop of the same specification for the same price or cheaper. That's X3100, Santa Rosa 2.2Ghz, 120-160GB HDD, slot-loading DVD drive, remote, a sleek design to encompass it all, plus iLife and OSX of course (but can't really put that on a Windows laptop, it's extra for music and video editing software that's as good as iLife).

So you ask for a comparison to find a better laptop for the same price or cheaper (implying a PC since you know Mac prices) BUT you then INSIST it has OSX and Mac Apps on it....um *HELLO McFly*!?!!? Anyone at home?

I can show you any number of PCs that blow away Apple's hardware for half the price. I guess you'll have to do a little hacking to get OSX on there, but it'll work with hardware that has supported drivers and a purchased copy of OSX. You'll STILL come out way ahead. In fact, I'm thinking of doing JUST that since Apple insists on putting 2002 technology in a 2007 laptop and charging 2x as much.
