In fact it's Euro and not Euro's.

1 Euro
2 Euro

and so forth

So you guys don't have proper grammar over there or what?

Hello Taco Bell! I'd like two Taco and three Burrito to go! I don't want any tortilla chip with my two taco! Got that?

LOL. I guess if you're going to sell your sovereignty out, you might as well drop the plural of words while you're at it....

Apple pushes us to get the mid-range items. And they can't put a bigger HDD in it, well, they could, but then they would have to update the MacBook Pros and their HDD's and so on. :)

Speaking from a gaming perspective, it would be FAR more useful to have a SLOWER CPU and a dedicated graphics card than the 2+ GHz Core2Duos and an integrated graphics system that can't run squat no matter how fast your CPU is.

What Apple doesn't seem to get (or care about) is that not everyone needs the latest and greatest CPU. Gaming is far more dependent on the GPU than the CPU these days. A 1.6GHz Core2Duo would do just fine if it had a good GPU but a 2.6 GHz Core2Duo won't help at all if you're running Intel Integrated graphics....

I see a lot of talk that most Mac users don't care about gaming. If that's true, then why does Apple use the GPU as the MAJOR difference between the Macbook and Macbook Pro (other than screen size)? If Pros don't need high-end graphics then what's the deal there? And if gamers do and they're more of a low-end crowd (save the extremists), it would almost make more sense to have things the other way around.

The problem with going to the MBP to play games is that for the same or not much more money, I could go ahead and get a MacPro, which even with its outdated (but desktop instead of laptop based) graphics cards still runs circles around the latest MBP for gaming. So a MB + MacPro might be a better solution than say an iMac + MBP when both would cost you about the same money.

I also agree it's ridiculous how they push you to the next higher model to upgrade one lousy feature like the DVD burner thing. That's great for them, but it's why I keep putting off buying my next computer. I don't want a combo drive. Maybe I don't need the $1500 black MacBook either. Maybe I want a $1100 MB with a Superdrive for on the road + a MacPro to use at home. But if I'm going to get into the $1500+ range, why not go $2000 for the base MBP and be able to play real games there (it does better than the iMac for goodness sake on many/most games!) And why did they take away the NVidia option on the iMac. I have Windows and Linux side reasons why I'd rather go NVidia so I had to write off the iMac altogether.

All this makes me wish Apple would clone out the operating system. If they can't offer enough proper hardware options, then let someone else do it already. I wonder how many sales they've lost to Hackintoshes because they don't have the hardware models people personally want. I want the Operating System, personally. Hardware is hardware. Now that they've gone Intel, they're really just putting pretty cases on STANDARD clone parts and charging more for it.

In fact, I'm thinking of doing JUST that since Apple insists on putting 2002 technology in a 2007 laptop and charging 2x as much.

Let's not get carried away... Core 2 Duo CPU's and Santa Rosa chipset are not 2002 technology... but I can see where you're coming from. Just don't let the emotion get in the way of a good argument.

I believe that violates Apple's EULA.

So does hacking your iPhone, but that doesn't stop loads of Mac users and even Mac Sites from encouraging such things. Personally, EULAS and the DMCA rank right up there with mankind's worst inventions, right along with oil wars and religious zealots. Why do I suddenly feel the urge to boot up my Linux machine.... The problem with Apple's thinking now is that they're using CLONE PARTS and pretending that their hardware is special when it's not. Only the OS is important at this point. Doing evil things like not using PC Bios for video cards so you can put any off-the-shelf PC video card in a Mac Pro tells me Apple hasn't learned much during this whole Intel shift.

I was referring to the GPU on the Macbook. It IS similar to 2002 technology if you look at that comparison page posted about graphics cards. It's not THAT much faster than my ANCIENT Radeon 7500. At least it does have T&L and DirectX10 support (to run Aero via Bootcamp or Parallels or something).

Well, in any case, the main feature I need in a laptop is the ability to run LogicPro8 (so I can carry it into my living room where my Roland Digital Workstation/Piano (in a cherry wood furniture grade cabinet) is without junking up the room with an eyesore (i.e. desktop, no matter how pretty). I want to be able to pack the thing away when I'm done working and leave it as a living room (not a den).

I'll worry about games on a new desktop (waiting for MacPro to get a newer video card option as the new iMac is clearly a waste of time in that regard seeing as the MBP and even the OLD (Nvidia) iMac is faster at gaming.

Mmm... I just got my first Mac, a White 2.2GHz SR Macbook yesterday night, and it was all running great until my AirPort abruptly died. It was working for a while, then I realised I had no internet connection, and I couldn't switch it on again.

So, I called Apple support and stayed on the phone for an hour and a half with a nice chap named Lucas trying 4857394857934875 ways to get my AirPort back up and running before we got to the point where he told me to reinstall Leopard (archive + install) and call back. By the time I called back, the line was closed which means I had to wait till Monday before I could get phone support again.

I tried following directions on the Apple support forum pages but nothing worked. Then I tried reinstalling Leopard again (deleted everything, basically started completely afresh with my Mac, I even got to see that very cool intro video again) but it didn't work. And now it tells me that I have no AirPort card installed!

I will just call up Apple again on Monday morning. SIGH. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!

I can't help but laugh at how so many Mac users care more about worthless cases than they do what's inside those cases (aluminum can dent you know; some of us PREFER to NOT have aluminum cases; they also don't do WIFI as well). Meanwhile, the Macbook FINALLY gets 3D graphics that aren't 2 computer centuries old (only 1 century now; at least it can run modern T&L games) and people are like "Yawn. Where's the aluminum case dammit?" It's unreal. Hey, why don't we all use speak and spells and put them in drilled aircraft grade titanium cases and look ultra cool as we pull the string on the back and it tells us how to spell MILK?

Give me function over form any day. The biggest disappointment I see is that stupid combo drive on the $1100 special. If I have to dish out $1500 to get a nicely loaded Macbook, I have to ask myself if it isn't worth it to spend a few hundred more and just buy a Macbook Pro. Considering it's faster than iMacs for gaming (unbelievable IMO, but there you go), maybe it's worth it.

I COMPLETELY AGREE!

You can go nuts trying to decide which one is better for the $$$... that is what they call "agressive pricing".
The only thing keeping me away from the bottom of the line MB is the non-replacable DVD/CD-RW Combo drive.(and is it actually worth $200 more for 40GB more and the ability to burn DVD's when I own a USB DVD+ -RW?)

I am leaning towards the 2.20GHz MacBook White over the MBP base model for these reasons:
1) I will swap the 120GB HDD out with a 160GB Passport and use the 120 as a Time Machine backup (cant easily replace HDD on MBP)
2) I use my XBOX360 for gaming and dont "NEED" a dedicated video card (plus the x3100 looks like a HUGE improvement for the MB)
3) The MB and MBP both now accept up to 4GB RAM (used to be 2BG limit for MB)
4) I dont use the PCMCIA slot on the current laptop I have now except for the wifi card (Yeah, this laptop is old and doesnt have built-in) so I dont need the Express34 slot.
so at the end of the day I can spend about $1500 and have a 2.20 GHz MB with 160GB HDD and 2.5GB RAM (purchase one 2GB chip and leave a 512 in there until I need to upgrade to 4GB) and also have a 120GB backup drive OR get an aluminum 2.20GHz MBP with 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD for $2000 ($1700 if I purchase through the refurb dept).

So the real question to me was, is $200-500 more worth it for basically the same PC with a smaller HDD and a slightly larger LCD backlit screen.

All this makes me wish Apple would clone out the operating system. If they can't offer enough proper hardware options, then let someone else do it already. This is a funny statement.... the whole reason Apple had problems in the old days was the proprietary hardware issue. The reason that everyone is complaining about what to get is they have been able to mix and match 1,000,000 different configurations for the past 25 years with a PC.

This is what Apple has always done and is why the OS is so stable. MY XBOX runs GREAT and everything I purchase for it was designed to for the exact same hardware configuration on every model. (this is why I stopped gaming on the PC.. I was sick of always having to upgrade video cards, etc).

The biggest reason (IMHO) Apple is doing so great now, the hardware prices are comparable to PC (when PC is configured closely) and people are buying more laptops nowadays than before and most laptops are all non-user replaceable hardware... so the proprietary thing is a moot point now.

I am a PC technician professionally and was amazed at how great windoze ran virutally on Mac OS X (we are talking SUPER PERFORMANCE over running natively) and that is what is causing me to switch. Well, that and I am sick of spending countless hours looking for drivers when I rebuild a machine.

Glad I returned my previous gen MacBook (which I bought sometimes in early October and returned within the 14 day period). I picked up a new Santa Rosa MacBook last night.. A little disappointed that the chassis stayed the same but it's got exactly what I was hoping for, Santa Rosa platform and X3100. Thats what most people wanted, so this is a welcomed update to many including myself.

I noticed my LCD screen isn't as nice as my previous gen model was.. the whites aren't as white.. they look off-white on my new one.. anybody else noticing this? I am sure Apple also uses different makes for their LCD (whoever can produce them cheaper and faster).. I guess I was lucky and had a nice one last time.. this one will get the job done though.

Jay

I stick with Apple's choice to keep integrated graphics in the MacBook. I have an almost 4 year old dell desktop with 256MB Ram and Integrated graphics (not the one in my sig, obviously), and it runs 1080P like a dream. All while using less power than a graphics card. People who need graphics cards won't be choosing the 13.3 inch screen. I have a hard time understanding why this is such a hard pill to swallow for some people

The other true reality for us Canadians is the reason our dollar is so high is because of how poor the US's economic situation is.

Actually, the US economy isn't to blame for the low value of the US dollar, its the booming economies of other nations. The US is still the richest country in the world, and produces more per person than other countries. Our problem is that we import more than we export, and we consume far more than we need, so foriegn money is worth more to us, and the other nations are getting rich, feeding the fat American appetites for luxury.

I think you're talking about V2000, not betamax. Betamax tapes don't flip over and can record 6 hours (at slow speed) just like VHS.

You are correct. Betamax was far superior to VHS just like Blue Ray is better than HD-DVD, and Firewire is better than USB 2.0 and Solid State Memory is better than Hard Disk Drives. It all comes down to who is to market first, and how much will said product cost the consumer. VHS won out because it was cheaper, especially at a time when VCRs cost $1100+ and a single tape ran you $50.

There are some news stations that are only now retiring their Betamax cameras and recorders and selling their Digital Betamax equipment for dirt cheap. They are switching to HD because it is the future, and it is inherently better than Betamax.

I agree on everything except the MacBook Pros being faster than iMacs for gaming, but you did say IMO. I played many a game on my MBP and my girlfriends iMac screams past it in performance and GFX. The MBP is good for laptop gaming, but the iMac is certainly faster.

p.s. I'd rather have a machine with useful insides as well. It's hard to know that Apple will never have dual HDD and SLI in their portables. The PCs that do have it are fat and ugly, but it would be nice to see an Apple version of that tech. Apple could at least do what MacEnforcer has been screaming about and make the optical drive modular and add a tenth of an inch to the case, so I can swap out the optical drive for an extra hard drive.

For Various Complaints I Offer This

If Apple could only...
Release an aluminium macbook, basd on Penryn, that was ultra-portable with a dedicated 3D graphics card that crushed games and had a battery life of 10 hours for $999 most all of the "waiters" would buy. Some will still like to wait just in case.
I just purchased a blackbook which was my 2nd mac in 6 weeks. My first was a 2.8 ghz 24" imac.
Things to think about prior to complaining...
1. The difference between white and black after the hard drive upgrade is $125. It's your choice, Apple makes more money and you get what you want IF YOU WANT IT.. win... win. No one can make you purchase the blackbook. I did because either I'm a pretntious *****... or I just like the black finish. The world can decide.
2. You can compare hardware by various mfg. to Apple all day long. My macbook and my imac both run great. Spend $1500 on a windows based laptop and try to run Vista in all its' glory and make it work with your software/games. Good luck. That's one of the reasons I switched. Apples hardware and software work togehter very well and run windows for my deidicated real estate apps.
3. You can't always get what you want but sometimes you get what you need. It all comes down to that, Any sane computer user knows that. It's give and take. My blacbook is super portable, runs great, and does everything that I need it to do. So many people talk about "well maybe I would want to run some 3D software, so I'll wait." You'll be waiting for current technology to advance itself to what you feel delivers value for your budget and still then the more expensive computer will always do more than yours and you will still more than likely feel slighted. Total cost after I upgraded the RAM to 2GB myself. $1600. And, that aint bad. If I use it for 3 years, my avg. life span for a PC, It will cost me about $50 a month for ownership.
I could be totaly wrong here, but it still seems that on the whole... software/hardware and value/performance... The current "updated" macbook is still a good value.

I'm finally a Mac owner!

My first Mac. Just ordered a 2.2 Ghz white Macbook with a 250 hard drive. I also just ordered 4gb of Crucial RAM. I'm excited. Goodbye XP!

I'm joining this community waiting for the Holy Grail.

I'm telling you this from a reliable source who prefers to remain anonymous : the new Macbook and Macbook Pro will be announced January the 14th, 2008.

The same goes for Office 2008 for Mac, a huge upgrade.

So you've got to be patient. 2 1/2 months to go. Save your money !

Hmmm... your source must be the crackhead down the street from me. My source says spring, probably March/ April timeframe. Apple wouldn't release another revision of MacBooks a couple months from now. The Mac Pro in a couple weeks, followed by new apple tv and MacBook Pro at MWSF in January.

No, the problem is that you're totally right! So be very careful, those that don't like logic and reason and live in the insane world of (let's compare hardware but not software/let's compare price but leave certain things out) will be flaming you soon.

Professional video editor/photo editor/photographer that knows nothing about web design and needs a website yesterday... get Mac... uses Aperture and masters it... goes to iWeb... Aperture library is there... can make a gallery in seconds, it sucks, but it's online.

Same guy needs to make a slideshow of images... exports photos from Aperture directly to Final Cut Pro with transitions and durations... exports them and chapter markers to DVD Studio Pro... burns DVD. Same guy needs to make a list of folder contents and send to God knows who... opens folder... selects all folders and copies them to clipboard... goes to Pages... pastes contents from clipboard and folder names get inserted with spaces separating them... could never do this in Windows or with Word.

Guy thinks to himself... why the hell did I use Windows before? I love having good hardware, but when it comes down to it hardware ain't s*** without the software, and Apple's software is everything. It keeps me moving at my pace... it doesn't stop unless I do something wrong... and it thinks the way normal people do. Bottom line... it keeps me efficient and productive. Windows did the same thing, but not as smoothly as Mac OS X and iLife and the Pro Apps.

Hmmm... your source must be the crackhead down the street from me. My source says spring, probably March/ April timeframe. Apple wouldn't release another revision of MacBooks a couple months from now. The Mac Pro in a couple weeks, followed by new apple tv and MacBook Pro at MWSF in January.

I hope, and believe there's a good chance that the MBP will get updated before then. The MacPro is a definite for January, the MBP is a hopeful, since the current model just adds the option of a faster processor and HDD. The MacBook has its update, it has Santa Rosa and much better integrated GFX, so if you want one, get one. In some regards it's a great choice over a low end 15" MBP.

If Apple does update the MB, or give it a new case in January, then I would be very surprised, and Apple would have started back on the path of being a real computer company that innovates and designs breathtaking computers, instead of a wannabe Motorola putting all their efforts in a phone.

On the morning the MacBooks were updated, I ordered the 2.2 White with 2GB RAM and 250GB hard drive. Later that day, I decided that I didn't need all that hard drive space and that I could upgrade the RAM later if I wished. So I cancelled my order and went to the nearest Apple store. I picked up the 2.2 White along with .Mac.

So far everything is running great and I am settling in. I have been a 100% Windows guy for the past 14 years. This is all new to me, but it feels good already. I have had no issues with the computer or software so far. I haven't done anything super intensive yet, but "only" 1GB of RAM seems like enough for now. The wireless connection works throughout my house with only one disconnection so far.

I look forward to finally doing something with all the DV video files I have laying around. With iMovie and iDVD, it seems like it will be a breeze. My wife and I tried to make DVDs with them on Windows, but it was relatively complicated and all of the software we found was barely usable.

Not all plural words have an S on the end :p

Don't Buy Yet!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT BUY A MACBOOK YET!

They are going to be releasing new MacBooks with 1TB HDD and a 4GHz CPU, 8GB RAM and 1GB Video card, 1/2" titanium case and 21" fiberoptic backlit touchscreen and 24 hour battery within the next 10 years!

If you buy now you will be wasting your money!!!

I am goig to just keep my good old Pentium2 with a 20GB HDD and 128MB of RAM running windows 95 until these come out becasue I dont want something that is going to be obsolete in 12 months!

Because of the limited upgrade but more because they're gouging Canadian customers, I've gone out and bought a $350 Acer.;)

Seriously. :p

When they decide to price the Macbook at least the same as in the U.S. and offer a competitive value, I'll reexamine getting another Macbook.
