You're absolutely right. Obviously Apple is not pending enough money to develop ML just because they're cheap.

Apple's corruption and frugality is what is delaying the release of ML.

You're so perspicacious in pointing out that they should release it sooner. All that bull crap about about proper testing and de-bugging so we get a smooth running OS with a minimum about of bugs and glitches is just Apple's corruption and refusal to spend any money on hiring enough developers to get ML out sooner.

Boy, I'm glad somebody finally told the truth about all this.

Thanks for your eye opening post.

Thank you! I needed that to brighten my day. Seriously.

The article says that Mountain Lion will be released late summer. Yesterday there was a post that the new MacBook Pros will be released in June.

Wouldn't this mean that the new MacBooks will be released later?

I thought about that too. I'm hoping that they will release the new Macbooks at WWDC, but I'm not betting all my chips on it. If they did, I would imagine they would do something where anyone who buys one will get a free upgrade to Mountain Lion like they've done in the past.

Ok so after 60 responses with a bunch of "I'm underwhelmed"

The only suggestion I read was a new filesystem (which I agree on)

Basically what I've found to be the norm at Macrumors is a persistent whining about computing not because stuff doesn't work but because not enough blinking lights have been added or whooshing sounds.

Some of you are computing as a form of entertainment and that's ok. Some of you have work to do and want to know about the tangible impact of new features.

Different needs that often yield far differing perspectives. Mountain Lion is substantial...it just may not be hitting your "fun button" but with all OS updates a lot of work has been done to improve our favorite OS.

Given the context, I'm pretty happy. A year after Lion which was itself a so-so release we get a bunch of new useful features. Keeps OSX feeling fresh and up-to-date. I don't have a laundry list of things that are desperately wrong with OSX so I'll take incremental improvements over change for the sake of it.

what I'm guessing will happen, is that they will offer a free upgrade to anyone who buys a New mac, after the WWDC preview of ML and they showcase the new Mac lineup
like last year, people who brought a mac 30 or so days before lion went live got a free copy to download from the app store.

im guessing if its anything like lion, it will be out in july. mid to late.
give or take

What is this I don't even. When you get an engineering degree, we can discuss half the things you mentioned, until then enjoy your car that uses petrol. IC engines are used because oil is plentiful and easily restored...not because of any kind of conspiracy.

Oo..ooh..pick me!!! I've got an engineering degree. Let's talk since apparently others are beneath our kind.

They've said late summer. Maybe it's two months ahead of schedule, but I doubt it. I think they realize Lion was a bit rough, and they don't want to repeat that. Also, Apple may announce new features at WWDC that need testing and aren't part of the current builds.

Re: Pricing. I think It'll be free for anyone who bought Lion from the MAS, $29 otherwise.

Agreed. As Lion has become more mature the changes that are underway become more architectural and less "chrome"

Plus we're still seeing a move away from Carbon being the dominate framework to Cocoa and taking legacy API and replacing them with 64-bit modern versions.

This stuff is not sexy but one day when an app does something really cool people will think about how clever the developer is and in truth the enabler of said new functionality will be that low level "boring" stuff.

If i'm a betting man i'm going to be looking at iCloud pretty intently over the next couple of OS revisions. There are BIG plans for iCloud and it's really going to change how we use all of our devices.

The iCloud infrastructure is to Apple in the next 10 years what the iTunes infrastructure was to Apple in the previous 10 years. It will drive Apple's growth and provide massive value to all of Apple's computing (and content consumption) products the way iTunes did for iPod.

It's amazing how myopic the press, analysts, bloggers, and consumers are. They focus on the shiny new device, they try to mash up spec charts and run benchmarks, they weigh and measure and calculate pixel density. But really, Apple's devices are just access points to the Apple ecosystem and infrastructure. Just windows into the bigger picture.

I may be one of the few but I'm excited for this new version. Mirroring my Mac on my TV sounds awesome. I just enjoy sew features, when they work that is. I'm still getting used to the Mac OS as it is (bought my first Mac a few months ago).

Any idea how huge the download is going to be? Lion is already close to 4GB, I'm just wondering how many hours I'm gonna have to wait for the download to finish. Are they going to use the flash-drive idea again like they did with Lion or was that squashed long ago?

Im hoping this fixes the weird occasional video crashes with some nvidia cards (frustratingly both the ones in my macs) I've really liked the DPs sofar other than that.

People like you are the reason we still drive internal combustion engine vehicles, the reason we still have primitive healthcare, the reason we still program with "text files", the reason we still have printers and use paper, the reason we still have to fight for social equality, and the reason we have impediments for progress.

Why don't you go pickup a pc, put DOS or Linux on it & hook it up to a CRT monitor and you can enjoy the power that will crackle out of the crevices of your "power-user" system to p0WN all the things with EZ.

Thank you. "Motivated reasoning." Perfectly describes that type of person. Passionate belief in the untrue, despite the facts presented, and using motivated reasoning to brainwash the mind into believing it's false reality.

And it's not only harmful to the person, but harmful to society. Like you said, it's why we still drive internal combustion vehicles. And it's also why there is still a large portion of society who doesn't believe climate change, despite facts and even some common sense. Hell, 40% of religious conservatives don't trust science as a whole.

It's really pretty sad.

Ditto here. Is this the Tim Cook effect?

really ****** thing to say
but yes – there simply are no people in the world who can match steve.
That aside, none of the previous OS X updates made us go 'OMG life will be different...' – they have all been incremental and released before they could have been throughly tested and therefore all were buggy, but thanks to them we now have Windows 7/8 that actually doesn't suck and that's the future mr. Jobs envisioned.

Seeing as Craig Federighi is now in charge of OSX after Bertrand Serlet retired, it seems to me like you're placing the blame in the wrong area.

I don't know what the die hard Macheads expect from Apple. Mountain Lion looks like a great evolution of Lion. The bigger improvements will happen next year in 10.9.

Naturally, I've noticed a difference in OSX ever since Federighi was put in charge. But that's to be expected. Bertrand Serlet can't simply be replaced. With Forstall focusing on iOS, and the other OSX architects gone, OSX is going to be changing as we've already begun to see. Change isn't bad. Either embrace it, or get left behind. You should know how Apple works by now.

There are not so many new features in ML, that's right. I think the main reason is because ML is to Lion what SL w to Leopard. There are a lot of changes and bug fixes under the hood and those alone are worth upgrading. E.g. there is a bug in mail that stops receiving emails from Exchange after awhile and one needs to close and restart. Just one example of what will be fixed in ML but never ever in Lion ( which is ridiculous on the other hand)

Unlike Microsoft...Apple does not rush to push out OS upgrades to get ahead of anything. Microsoft does it to get ahead of Apple and history proves that is disastrous at best. Vista was one of those moves and was a complete failure.

You sure about that? Because I distinctly remember Steve Jobs gloating on stage about how Apple had released several versions of OS X in the gap between XP and Vista. Also you realize that Apple has pushed out an entire OS since Windows 7? And might get Mountain Lion out the door before Windows 8, This will be what, the third Mountain Lion preview? Windows 8 is only on its second preview, with the 3rd coming out in 2 weeks.

Didn't have any troubles with exchange in Lion, but in DP3 the mail app always mixes up internal and external server names so I have to delete the internal manually and replace it by the external. Still wasn't fixed in yesterday's seed.

Trolling aside in this forum....has anyone found anything new or changed in this update? I cannot yet.....

AGAIN, my question is: what "great evolution of Lion" are you talking about? Reminders and notifications? Please feel free to enlighten me

i don't think they will offer it for free, expect for those who buy it 30days before launch.
its not in their model to offer a OS for free,

Breaking?: The Collada 3D 'editor' is now included in Xcode 4.4 DP5. Problem is you can only view files at the moment.

The editor was already promised in earlier release notes for Xcode 4.4 with a preview mode available in Lion but at the moment it seems that it's just a grayscale preview tool.

Just a few unofficial release notes for the ML update.

- Messages now shows the red dot when you have new messages even when the application is closed.
- The "Do not disturb" switch is now active in Notification center
- This build feels even faster

Those are the only new things I noticed so far, on the other hand:

- Everything the previous update broke is not fixed, not sure about the (random) kernel panics, didn't see them (so far).
- AirPlay mirroring still only works on selected Macs
- The Safari compass icon isn't HiDPI ready yet (new icon alert?)
- Safari introduces new graphic corruption in this build.
- The App Store again failed the first time when downloading this update, maybe it's fixed for the next, but this has been quite annoying with the ML updates so far.

For those who're hoping ML will be ready with WWDC: No it won't, unless they're sending us a 2 month old build.
