One thing I hate is that for my Mac Pro with parallels installed it is constantly backing up new images of the windows drive which are huge files. Wish there was some way to get that incrementally instead, but with the ease of TM.

Not automated of course but disable that VM in the Time Machine options whilst working and then enable it afterwards.

Nice if that could be scripted in some fashion, or put in an RFE with Parallels :)

Nice..

Nice, we also have more than one Mac and it helps having a TC to handle it.

That said, I am also in the party "let's have an iTunes server". I'd love to have it!! At home I am slowly getting to the point where I don't know where to store all my pics, videos, digital content (music, movies, you name it).
Let's hope such a device materializes and that it will not only be "iTunes server" but also "iLife server". I shot video during the holidays (Sony HDV handycam) and it ate up almost all of my 2.5" 250GB HDD that I took along. Now... Where am I supposed to store all of it?

Apple, please, provide a "drobo" like HOME SERVER with iLife and iTunes compatibility, expandable drives and I'll be more than happy...

Hah! It turns out I bought it at Best Buy and I'm within the 30 day return window.

I bought mine at a Japanese reseller on July 1st so IF we do 30 day things here (no idea), mine HAS to go back tomorrow.

Honestly a 500 GB is more than enough, I have two laptops on mine and 385 gigs free, only using a few MB a day so it will last more than long enough, and when it fills I see no reason why I would be disappointed it would delete the oldest backups, since I can't see a reason I would need backups older than a couple weeks at most...if I'm gonna need to do a restore, it's going to be because of a failure of some sort so I would naturally want the most recent backup, but still if I can double the capacity for the same price I'd be stupid not to.

Looks like the refurbished prices are still not updated considering a refurbished 1TB would cost $100 more than a brand new one... I would imagine that the refurbished 1TB will take the price point of $199 that the 500GB has now. And I would guess that the 500GB will become something like $149.

If it drops all the way to $99 I'll snatch one up real fast.
Refurbished models are going to fly.

I think I'm just going to buy one of HPs MediaSmart home servers. Their intergration with both Macs and iPhones seems far more "complete". The only real competitor on the Apple lineup is the mini with an external drive array in terms of raw functionality.

I had the same feeling. Here's to HP bringing more support to their expandable multiplatform solution.

Good suggestion, but no applicable to my situation. I keep Parallels open and running 24/7/365 as I use it very frequently. I have it excluded, and treat it as a separate machine now and run its own backups to an external hard drive, and once a month copy the vm file whole over as well for a good snapshot backup.

ah well

I did just that on July 1st. Figured since the update it got at MacWorld was the first one in a year, we were stuck at these capacities/pricepoints for another year...go figure.

Apple allows 30 days for returns, right? If so, get there before the end of the day.

Cool. I'll stick to my drobo though.

Me too. I love my drobo and it's design. My AEBS and ability to mount and share external drives (and printers) through it is really all I need. Maybe the Time Capsule will replace this setup if the current equipment retires.

iLife server?

Count me in as hoping that Apple comes up with a decent solution soon! With multiple macs, ipods and a nice dlsr and HD video. I need a way to store and share.

Come on Apple!!!!

When you have 5 Macs in the house all trying to back up, I think 2TB would be quite useful. I have a 1TB TC at the moment and its almost full, so we have offloaded one of the MacBooks to another external drive for backup.

2TB would also be handy for that extra bit of storage for excess media

Exactly! We have 2 of last 17" iMac models made, a late 2006 black MacBook, 17" MacBook Pro (Early 2008), and a brand new MacBook Air. That's 5 Macs. The notebooks use our 500Gb 1st Gen. TimeCapsule for TimeMachine, while the iMacs have dedicated external drives. Now, I'll get the 2Tb 2nd Gen. and picky-back the 2 external drives to it, and have a total capacity of 4Tb. I use the our TimeCapsule as our iTunes "server". Our entire library is on it, and all 5 Macs have access to it.

I do wish Apple would release an iTunes Server software, that would be great!

What if I already have a wireless router (D Link DIR-655) and an external drive. Can I get the same effect. Or do I need to configure something on my Mac?

Also, has the router function of Time Capsule included bandwidth prioritizing?

Decisions, Decisions...

I have a 1.5TB in the fourth bay of my MP that I use to back up my applications and documents drive in bay 1 (all my music and other media site on 2 x 1.5TB drives in bays 2 & 3). As I sit here, my apps and document drive has 403.6GB used and 961.2GB free. I've been using my TM drive since February and have it backing up the entire apps and document drive and it has 834.9GB used and 562.1GB free. So, since February my backups are DOUBLE the size of the space used on the drive it's backing up! My guess is that by October my TM drive will run out of space.

Now, I'd been toying with the idea of getting a 2TB drive figuring it may allow me to fit 1 year of back ups on a single drive. Some places around me have 2TB drives for $200. The only advantage I see to having the airport extreme is that since the drive isn't physically connected to the box it's backing up, if something like a power surge or lightening strike did hit, I'd be better off.
