Apple Updates Time Capsule to 1 TB and 2 TB Capacities

Looks like the refurbished prices are still not updated considering a refurbished 1TB would cost $100 more than a brand new one... I would imagine that the refurbished 1TB will take the price point of $199 that the 500GB has now. And I would guess that the 500GB will become something like $149.

If it drops all the way to $99 I'll snatch one up real fast.

My first reaction when a product update is pushed out is to check the refurb store. Yeah not only is the 1TB $100 more, it's also first gen--not dual band.

It took "forever" for the dual band AEBS to show up, which is now $149. The previous generation AEBS is $135. They're not going to drop the TC below that. They'll probably drop the 1TB to ~250; dunno when they'll intro the dual-band version to the refurb store. As for the 500GB, it'll have to stay at a price point above the AEBS, maybe $179?

man, i was hopin to get an updated time capsule when they came out but its still to expensive....

it needs to be

1tb: $149
2tb: $249.

Cheap, cheap, cheap

Listen, I'm as price sensitive as anyone, but I don't go crying about how Apple charges too much every time they introduce a new product or an upgrade.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it. Period. This philosophy will save you many headaches down the line.

(Believe me, I would prefer to own a MacPro, but this is being written on a mini.)

I guess as an American I am in the minority: I don't worship at the alter of low prices. I don't think Walmart is a bargain, and don't think that low prices are automatically better than higher quality at a higher price point.

Yes, Macbook Pros are wildly overpriced compared to a comparably outfitted Dell -- I would still prefer the Mac because of the OS and the fact that when I call for help there is someone there who has a clue.

If you don't believe that . . . great. You have that right. But don't buy an Apple product, they are not made for you.

when you can get a terabyte with a nice aluminum external enclosure for 80 bucks.

But....if I had a family with a few computers, time capsule would be kinda nifty.

xbox

Will this work wirelessly with an xbox? I have heard things in the past that said no.

Also how is the internet speed with this n router?

Thanks

$300 is still too much for a 1TB hard drive….I know, I know, it comes with a router, but what’s that worth? $50? 1TB drives are going for under $80.

Sure, for some people it’s worth it, but for me, I’d rather save $200 and simply back up the old-fashioned way via enclosure and USB

My only problem with the Time Capsule is the single hard drive. I paid $600 over a year ago to get a Hammer 2TB storage array. While I don't use Time Machine, I pack up both mine and my wifes Macs to it and set it up as a 1TB RAID-1. I'd just eb afraid if that 1 2TB drive failed then all my data would be gone. At least with a RAID-1 the odds of both going at once are reeeeally slim. :)

500GB for $199

For anyone who needs only 500GB, Tekserve in Manhattan is selling the old one for $199, and has been for several weeks now.

If you don't believe that . . . great. You have that right. But don't buy an Apple product, they are not made for you.

I'd be expecting a router to cover my house and my neighbours' too at that price. Yeah Apple's products aren't made for me, they're made for people with more money than sense. I appreciate that people buy Apple's products because they all work together nicely, but I don't think those people see how much of a ride Apple takes them for with products like this. You can't make an argument for quality of components or performance that can add up to the $100-$150 extra they are charging here.

I have the original 500gb TC. I love it. Now I only use it to store files I can share on from my iMac to my Macbook with no problems. Also, I like the back up option. While it is slow on Wifi, there is not much it does back up. It runs in the background and I never notice it. I did have a HD crash on me and had to back up from the TC. It took about 3 hours (90gb) and I pluged it in via Ethernet to do it. Not horrible considering how often I'll have to do that. I have external drives but it's a pain to plug them into my Macbook and back up. So I paid the premium for ease of use more than anything else. Plus it's pretty!!! I can always upgrade to HD on the TC to a bigger size but I just don't need it. FYI, my iMac backs up to an external Firewire drive. I had it before the TC and figured it works great so why change it. Good move on Apples part to upgrade the HD's.

Does anyone actually care about Time Capsule??? Its too slow IMO to be used for backups.

Depends on what band you use. On B/G is it painful, but if you run it on N it peaks at 300Mb and works rather well. Regardless, plug the thing in over ethernet for the first backup and it saves a lot of headache going forward.

No RAID1 = no sale for me sadly. :(
I think RAID1 is useful for a media server or storing creative media (photos/video/music) on an external or second drive where you might not have another copy.

But for me, backups *are* the redundancy to what's on the original drive, and don't need a RAID1 type of solution.

YMMV.

I have a dual 500GB WD external drive in RAID 1 hooked up to my MBP for Time Machine backups. I'm too nervous about a disk failing to do RAID 0.

I did just that on July 1st. Figured since the update it got at MacWorld was the first one in a year, we were stuck at these capacities/pricepoints for another year...go figure.

So you clear the thing off, grab the pieces (and the box if you are crazy enough to still have it) and your receipt and go back to that local apple store where you very nicely ask the manager to let you return it, even though you know it is past their usual returns cause you need that larger sized one. and you are very polite and very cool is he says no. but if he says yes, you thank him very sincerely.

as someone that worked retail management, nothing gets a no faster than someone that is coming in against the rules even knowing and admitting he knows the rules, demanding something he deserves and being a douche. but sometimes, when someone is genuinely polite and it's a bendable area, we will bend.
