Played around with friends 13 Pro yesterday and I must say the big camera "bump" is somewhat offputting, really, really really big, makes it look like a meme.
Also, the weight and size makes my SE2 feel really featherweight.
Side by side, it doesn't look all that different from the SE2 size-wise, but boy when you pick them up.
I'm worried that holding the phone up to do stuff for an extended period of time would be difficult. Also, cannot really see me having such big and heavy phone in a pocket. And this was the non-Max model. The 13 Pro Max must be like carrying a gold bar.

So, did they do a MacRumors poll or Reddit poll? That’s not even 1% of iPhone owners in the US. There’s no conclusion you can draw from this that is valid and sound.

Such fluff.
I mean...I'm not in the US and the reasons with the max. percentages per pie all align with my sentiments about this cycle

I don't know about the S7, and I am not sure how much the pandemic and the departure of Ive had an influence on this, but part of me thinks they didn't want to roll out their next major redesign of iPhone with the number 13. It is a silly concept but apparently it hasn't stopped many major corporations from skipping it in one way or another. e.g. VMware instantly springs to mind. The skipped 13 and jumped from 12 to 14 for their Workstation line of products.

Yep - that about sums it up for me too. I was going to finally upgrade my iPhone 6s to an iPhone mini but the camera "bump" (which is now more like a mountain instead of a molehill) has crossed my threshold of just way too stupid big. I'm a little scared Apple will form the conclusion the mini isn't worth their while when in fact it's just that they haven't made it acceptably good enough yet (for me anyway). And with the watch - just not enough focus on battery life. I really don't use any of the health/fitness features so I'm just after the basics but with a *much* better battery life. Really, one miserable day of battery life for a watch is just a joke.

You could still consider a 12 mini then - the camera bump there is “acceptable” by modern standards and the battery life/performance are way better than those of iPhone 6S. All for a better price than last year.

Do people still do this?

Online pre-ordering has gotten so much better and we're still in a pandemic.
Pandemic is even more reason to do it. Supply shortages + being able to "work" from home. At certain points there were long lines at Apple stores just cause people needed tech support or repairs.

IDK about preordering. I always assumed camping was the best way to get the phone ASAP and that Apple actually wanted people to do it for the free publicity.

The battery upgrade seems tempting. But, I saw the disappointment coming after WWDC and once headline features got cut for 15.1. Amazing what happens when you don’t work on anything all year…

While the 13 Pro may be a solid ‘S’ update, people seem to be ready for a notch-less redesign. Hopefully, Apple delivers that with next year’s iPhone 14 Pro. Just don’t reduce the battery Apple.

Last year I went from an AW0-ss to an AW6-red; did it for the oxymetry feature.

Have to say that the AW7 looks so much better than the 6 just due to the narrow bezels alone. Sexy display.

Tempting but I will wait for the next big hardware bump.

I think the general agreement with the iPhone mini is that people want a mini pro. Small screen with the same specs as the max.
Plus the fact that they made it too big. The Original SE size was perfect. If you're going to make a "mini", then make it useful for those who want true one-handed operation and a pocketable phone. (Plus add the high-end specs,)

Well, I was underwhelmed as well until I compared my 12mini with 13mini in real. 800 nits in the new one beats 625 in the 12. The difference is as if it was 800 to 400, seriously. So I have ordered 13mini. Hope they continue the line on the future

The every year update cycle of Apple is boring and annoying. Every year not a „new“ but just „another“ phone. Yeah, really? Apple presented yet another phone?

In the meantime features users want and miss are queuing up
- longer battery life (2-3 days) for watch and phone
- TouchID (and an SE model with only TouchID without FaceID)
- Camera is good enough, 24MP would be nice to have sometimes
- USB-C is a must-have today

Some of those features would have been mind blowing in the past, today those features are available since a few years on other platforms. But even the fact that Apple doesn‘t deliver or juust doesn‘t want to deliver is kind of boring.

Apple should change its mind and really should start to think different again. Yes, I would love to see something „Incredible, amazing, awesome“ from Apple again. But it won‘t be yet another smartphone.
They M1 could have been, but it is a too closed and proprietary kind of thing. „Lock users in, lock competition out“ is the way you have to go, if you can not compete with others.

And under screen Touch ID. Worth bringing back in this era of masks worn indoors.

It doesn't even need to be under the screen - just add it to one of the buttons, like on the iPad Air.
I'm disappointed they didn't do that, even though the Apple Watch integration helps a lot[*].

That said: It's been a while since a launch was exciting. The iPhone X, maybe? Mostly, it's just minor, incremental improvements these days - slightly faster, slightly better battery, slightly better screen, slightly better camera.

The software wasn't very exciting either - Shareplay is a 0/10, Maps improvements seems to be just around their HQ, Facetime is pretty much unused (unlike teams/zoom), the new ID capabilties go in "well, if my country uses it it instead of their existing DL app I guess it could be interesting". The only new feature I loved was the surround sound from AppleTV to my Airpods Max, but that was more of a "why doesn't this work?"-thing when I got the headphones rather than something new and fresh I'm delighted to see.

Hoping for new laptops later - I just want a Macbook Air (no fans...) with support for more than one screen.

[*] For one, it doesn't work all of the time. Second, this unlock doesn't work with other apps that want FaceID unlocks - like my work email, financial applications, password manager etc. So while it works great for looking up my shopping list in the store (wearing a mask, obviously) - it doesn't work when trying to use any apps on public transport. Or at all with my iPad Pro.

I don't think we need a standard port at all, if they want to mandate any form of "standard" phone charging, i'd propose wireless charging as it doesn't involve me plugging unknown random third party junk into my phone which may potentially hack it or blow it up.

USB type C as a "standard" is a total disaster, it's a mess of different power delivery capacities, protocol support and bandwidth capacities. Both in terms of the ports and the cables themselves.

The ports may be physically compatible, but that sure as hell doesn't mean it will actually work with your device.
How about data transfer? Thunderbolt can go 40Gbps right now. Wifi 6 is… 1Gbps or something? I don’t remember, but not 40Gbps. Apple is apparently having 40GHz super short range wireless transfer that is capable of great speed for Apple Watch, but locked out at the moment.

With all of these ProRes and video size approaching 240GB/hr, asking only wireless charging is far from enough, and nobody would settle transferring 240GB per hour. They’d prefer transferring data at 240GB per minute, or 32Gbps.

Going wireless doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its own problems, as wireless signals are far easier to be intercepted than wired connection, plus single drop issues due to range etc etc. It’s not unequivocally superior than wired connection in every way with minimal downsides.

Suited me as I tend to go for the 's' updates - the ones where the bugs from new hardware models etc have been ironed out!

For me, I’m just so damn happy with my 12 ProMax that I didn’t even watch the event for the first time in years. I don’t think that is a bad thing! I’ll be back in a year or 2 for a 14 or 15.
I updated most of my Apple devices last year, so Apple won’t get much of my money in 2021, but I will be back.
