The problem has little to do with Apple and more to do with the fact that in general, smart phones are just no longer "magical". Nearly everyone has one, nearly everyone has done everything there is to do on one, and not many people really care anymore. Smart phones are the new landlines. They're just... there.

So iPhone 13 Pro Max user here (upgraded from 12 PM) . I too was underwhelmed UNTIL I actually got the darn thing. It's AMAZING ( and reviews point the same way) Can't knock it til you try it. Not having to charge my phone ALL DAY...macro photos. ... C'mon son.

A random iphone 13 review (<--)

Let's just say that if Macro Photography was my thing, an iPhone or any smartphone would be pretty low on my list. These photos are at best on a $300-400 camera level.

Well yes. Smart phones are commodity products now, so just evolution. If apple would indeed manage to add a glucose sensor for diabetics in the Apple Watch I'm sure it will receive more rave than the last two upgrades, which were also mainly evolution.

Maybe they should go to cycles of 18 months or even 2 year cycles.

I think the 13 models are actually rather good, Apple have this year actually given me some things I care about, such as macro mode for the camera’s, Pro Motion displays, and better battery life. Unlike last year where 5G and Dolby Vision video recording are a bit ‘meh’, the visual refresh saved the 12 series.

But I find it interesting that the 13 Pro weighs over 200 grams while the 7 weighed only 145 grams. That’s a pretty noticeable difference. Size and weight have been creeping up over the generations, perhaps that why they introduced the mini.

Why do the Macrumors guys keep hitting Apple like this (with some interest-driven polls)?
MR is becoming more and more a gathering place of negative editors who take pleasure in showing what's bad about Apple and where problems exist. And do not take pleasure in showing what is outstandingly good.

The proportion of negative press to genuine technical rumors has shifted significantly. Either the new people at Macrumors are simply no friends of Apple anymore, or they make better money with bad news. We readers don't always have to like it, though.

Because hate is what drives the clicks.

I bet it'll be on the 14 if not then I'll keep waiting but considering every other product they offer is usb-c I doubt it'll take as long as pigs flying
Also, in EU they have to change to usb-c, but I think they will go portless instead

Indoors? In the US and UK far too few people are wearing masks OUTDOORS. Thankfully, I live in Japan, where we wore masks if we got the sniffles to protect our fellow human beings BEFORE the pandemic.
Yeah here in UK only place where you see masks are in supermarkets. Pubs no masks are worn

Have to be careful how far you take this avoiding germs approach. We need to be exposed to germs and some viruses. Overuse of hand sanitiser which is currently happening is not good as it kills good bacteria as well.

There are no lines outside the local store. Not sure if it's because the phones are not selling or because they are out of inventory.
Why would there be lines? There hasn’t been lines for years, and I live in a major city, because logistics is far more efficient. Lines are for scalpers. Apple has advocated they prefer consumers to pre-order/order online, and not to mention, I’d say clustering of people in close quarters is probably a _bad_ idea, given the obvious of a health crisis.

In this day and age who is still waiting for new iteration of iPhone with TouchID and no notch but I am! I once used iPhone X and within a week came back to 8 plus and still use the same. Please help me convince myself buy 13 PM.

That is true for professional photographers or people who love to take professional pictures.
For other folks however, the best camera is the one with them.
How often do those of us who are not professional photographers carry a dedicated camera outside of the house all the time?
Yes, but will those people really notice a difference between the 12 and the 13? I doubt it.

Like many people on here I've been using Apple products for the best part of 30 years which makes me a pretty loyal customer I'd say. There aren't any other companies I can think of that have maintained my business for that long. Despite that I'm not interested in reading just pro Apple journalism, that's not healthy, in the same way the internet has showed us that living in a political bubble is all too easy and very divisive. Frankly whilst I understand the pace of innovation can't be white hot every year, these updates are a little underwhelming. Any one of; return of Touch ID (masks), getting rid of the notch (battery percentage please) or using USB-C (two cables for my iPad Pro and my iPhone Pro!) would have got me to upgrade again this year, but I won't in the hope that Apple are listening to the criticism as well as the praise.

Apple isn’t targeting 12 owners. I mean, they’ll entertain anybody that’s willing to upgrade, but nobody is expected as an average consumer to upgrade iPhone every year, (Unless they’re on some type of specific upgrade plan.)For the most part, Apple is still targeting iPhone 7/iPhone 8 users. it’s the consumers that are holding onto a five year old iPhone, that they want to see upgrade.

I upgraded to a 13 Pro from my old X. My main reason to do so was honestly to give my old X to my Mother as her 6 is failing. An odd reason but there you have it.

My impressions so far are that the camera are a nice upgrade but the camera bump is absurdly big and gets in the way of my hand as I hold the phone. It's also so ugly compared to the X. A bloated slab of a phone with a gigantic wart on its back.

120hz is nice but should have been standard for years of course. Other than that I don't see any changes and that's fine, phones are basically finished as far as I'm concerned. The only thing left to do is to get rid of that stupid notch, and please get rid of the camera bump too, it's driving me nuts.

I mean, it’s your money and your right, but I can’t understand why anyone would upgrade every year.
I believe Apples strategy is to make refinements the second year of a design to scoop up those who were on the fence before.

You’re gonna be waiting a looooooooong time for USB-C. As in, when pigs fly.
If they're serious about selling the 13 Pro as a device for filmmakers using prores (an absurd idea, but whatever) then they'll need to ditch lightning. Imagine transferring over a shoot in RAW over such a slow cable, it would take hours.

Apple should partner with Leica. HUAWEI has absolutely incredible camera system that trumps iPhone 13 Pro. Yes I have the later too the Max version. But still is not at that top of top level.

I'll file this one under "no ****." The iPhone 13 was such a modest update in an "S" year, it was the first time I have ever skipped an annual upgrade since the 3GS
I was going to skip it but decided to upgrade, I shouldn’t have. I’m not impressed except by the better battery life

Smartphones in general are becoming commodities, and the iPhone isn't immune to this. Gone are the days when every year was a revolutionary must-have improvement over the last - aside from arguably folding phones (no thanks IMO unless you can get folding glass one day), there's no more room to innovate. They do everything, perform great for quite a while, and have as many cameras as you could possibly need.

Thought about upgrading my 11 to a 13mini but couldn't really justify it as all I'd really be gaining is an OLED screen (the 11's LCD is excellent), 5G (barely any coverage anywhere) and a smaller size. Plus a few on-paper spec bumps that don't matter in the real world. Other than that it does everything it could possibly need to do.

The only thing that might have swayed me is a fingerprint reader in addition to face ID so I can choose depending if I'm wearing gloves or a mask or if it's in my hand or lying flat on a desk. But they're pretty stubborn about never bringing fingerprint recognition back to the iPhone as that would be admitting they made a mistake, so once again it didn't happen.
