Does it mention what percentage of the respondents currently owned an iPhone 12? I can see how it would be underwhelming to them especially. From an 11 it's a good upgrade, and from anything older it's a no-brainer.

If you're into photography, the iPhone 13 is a huge jump over previous iPhone models, especially the iPhone 13 Pro model. A nice bonus is the longer battery life, too.

I'm still using the XS Max and it still feels new, still works great. I smashed the screen last week so was tempted to upgrade, but got an affordable repair so will hang on for the 14. These phones cost a lot - and they are worth it - but that cost means unlike in the past (3G to XS) I am not upgrading every time. I didn't feel that the 11 and 12 offered much in advance of the XS Max either. At least with the XS Max I can get repairs done affordably whereas with the newer models that is not an option unless you go official.
Yeah my max s is still going strong. I did go with a 13 for the better camera but I usually only upgrade every three years.

I think buying a phone every year is just a waste of money, and I work in iOS development lol.

I'm really disappointed in the lack of USB-C. It's clear Apple's pathway is one that is portless and they aren't going to waste engineering time upgrading to USB-C only to drop it in a couple of years; but I remain frustrated nonetheless.

I think the pearl clutching though is a little silly. It's an "s" upgrade. The only reason folks are running to their fainting couches is because Apple chose not to use the "s" designator with this one.

Like ALL "s" upgrades, they really only make sense if you're a full generation or two behind. Otherwise, you're getting a mild upgrade. The 3GS was slightly faster, that's it. The 4S added Siri but it was an early, pretty limited version and didn't work well. And in fact it was also only slightly faster; but fast enough, in Apple's estimation, to run the new software.

The 13 is a very reasonable "s" year upgrade. I think the early press of "Where's the revolutionary new stuff?" got a lot of people repeating it without really thinking about it.

120hz display? Cinema mode? Macro mode? These are all cool features that we'll all appreciate in future iPhones. It's a "mature" 12 (that's what the 's' upgrades have always been), and a great option if you're on an older phone.

I'm personally upgrading from a 12 Pro Max, even though I usually only upgrade every 2-3 years (I went from a 4 to a 6, to a 7, to an X, to my 12 Pro Max) The 120hz display is a killer feature for me. I know that'll be insane to some but it's worth it to me.

Big surprise, and I agree they should have just called it a 12s and that would have toned down a lot of the criticism.
I used a 13 pro max yesterday for a few hours, the funny thing is I mistook it for a 12 because the animations seemed to stutter so I thought oh ok no promotion this is a 12. Only once I was playing around with the camera did I notice the zoom said 3x did I realize it was a 13. Underwhelming is an understatement, the cameras are also seriously disappointing, the competition is so good and Apple is acting like they are the only game in town. Apple needs to learn the hard way, if they can lose a fanboy like me who used worship Apple they are doing something wrong.
My 12 Pro Max is laggy, my older less powerful Note 10 is not. Sad!

I think Apple may implement USB Type C connector on the iPhone earlier than you think. With two reasons: 1) the strong likelihood of the European Union requiring all rechargeable devices to have USB Type C charging connectors and 2) Apple needing to take advantage of USB Type C to accommodate higher charging rates (possibly as high as 50 W!) and to accommodate fast transfer for ProRes video files from the phone to a desktop or laptop computer.

Collecting opinions on a product you can't even pre-order yet (Watch Series 7) is kind of hollow. These are well established product lines that I don't think it's reasonable or wise to ever expect monumental shifts in features with each subsequent release. It's a bit like expecting next-year's car to add flying, self-driving, anti-matter power all in one release.

I upgraded to iPhone 13 Pro Max from iPhone X (which I wasn't ready to replace, but my wife took over my phone). I'm quite enjoying it. The screen's outstanding, the performance is fantastic and the battery feels infinite. But like, it's still totally an iPhone, which is great.

When you cut through past the most fanatical Apple fans, this has been a pretty bad year for iPhone and Apple Watch. Underwhelming.

the iPhone 14 leaks haven’t helped.
I think it all depends how old your current device(s) are to some extent. I went from an 11 Pro to a 13 Pro Max, and I'm about to go to a Series 7 Watch, from a Series 4. I actually went from a 2018 iPad Pro to a 2021, and I thought it was a solid upgrade.

Granted, I justify some of this by passing down my older devices to family/friends. But all in all I'm happy when I wait at least one generation before upgrading.

I am continually impressed with the camera, especially macro mode. I came from an iPhone X, so it's a huge upgrade. The only thing I could wish for is USB-C. However, I charge wirelessly so it's not a big problem. I see Apple dropping the port completely.

Well it is. Mini has exactly same camera system as iPhone 12 Pro Max. Faster processor and much improved battery. What else you want?
How can it have the exact same camera when it has a different number of lenses?
Really? Not sure what makes you think people like miniature displays! They were a thing over a decade ago. The failure of iPhone Mini has just proved that.
The historical success of the iPhone proves people like smaller devices, but more importantly, the mini wasn't released as a flagship model so no one has the ability to choose.
iPhone 13 Pro is the iPhone 13 mini Pro because there’s no way apple could fit those behemoth cameras in the current mini casing. As much as I’d love to see a pro version with the current mini size, but I bet the battery will suck because they have to compromise it in order to fit the big cameras that take so much space.
Hence why they need to be more disciplined when it comes to developing new models. I said it before and I will say it again, don't add something to the max you can't fit in the mini.

Just wanna chime in here on the mini. I would totally buy the mini if it had the best camera and display. The promotion display and the extra lens were the reason I went with the 13 Pro. I would love the smaller form factor if I didn't have to sacrifice features.

The survey includes data about a product that was neither made nor sold?
We're talking about the iPhone mini. A product that has in fact been made and sold for the last 2 years. Very unsuccessfully. We knew this a year ago from the reports that came out. And this survey is a further reflection of it. Where fewer than 10% of the iPhone market is even interested in the mini iPhone.

All due respect...no you wouldn't. I've heard it all a million times with regard to the mini iPhone, and so has Apple. They delivered the product people asked for. A flagship iPhone at a small size. No one bought it. Twice. At least, not enough people to justify its existence beyond this year, if reports are to be believed. If having the best available display and camera were such important factors, people wouldn't buy the iPhone 12/13 either. But they do. People don't buy the iPhone mini because it is too small for what it is and what it costs.

No. We are talking about what consumers want: a flagship mini. Which has never been provided and therefore is not reflected in the survey.

Besides, this survey was a joke. The questions were so poorly phrased it was clear they were attempting to get a headline not an understanding of consumers.

No they didn't. They delivered a gimped product that omitted the features that potential customers like jmorrison0722 and myself wanted. I was quite conflicted between the 12 mini and 12 Pro, and again between the 13 mini and 13 Pro. I never even considered the regular 12 or 13 models an option. They are the worst of both, in my opinion. Fewer features and unwieldy size.

I almost bought the Pro for the telephoto lens and 4K@60fps Dolby Vision recording, but was talked into trying the mini and glad I did. This time around, it was less of a dilemma for me because I wanted to lock in having the last mini so I can ride it out as long as possible.

I do still miss those features from the Pro models, though. Especially that telephoto lens. I paid $1249 for an iPhone X four years ago, so it has nothing to do with price. The mini was cheap, IMO. I'd have paid $1249 again for a 13 Pro mini. But Apple never made that product. So I was forced to choose between two imperfect options, and I picked the one that I find more tolerable for everyday use.

Only they never built a flagship mini. so really your statement is only intended to cause confusion.

As a member of the 10/6 to 10/11 delivery window group on another thread (my phone got out in earlier batch and I got mine on 9/3) I shared what for me personally sold me on the 13 ProMax over my 12 ProMax. Obviously as you read my list the camera and its various features were important so if thats not your thing then I can see why you were not impressed, or are waiting for the 14. I am happy with Face ID, I can just enter my code when masked at store such a minor inconvenience that is truly first world. I charge wirelessly so what the port is does not matter and I still use a lightning connector to my USB port for CarPlay on my Mazda 6. Anyway here are things that were important enough for me to upgrade!

“ we shall see what the 14 offers next year ;-). Lots of things I wanted in my 13 ProMax 1) I now have the 1TB option I had hoped for in my 12 ProMax giving me much more storage for my photography. 2) The macro lens which saves me the hassle of pulling out my adaptor for the macro to fit my current DSLR. 3) For me a much improved camera for day to day photography on the go. 4) As I hoped in my case— a better 5G modem from Qualcomm that is doing better in the weak cell signal area around my house than last years 5G on my 12 ProMax (but a big improvement from the intel modem which did poorly in my yard). 5) even better night mode photography that I am loving. 6) Better zoom now at 3X and above a nice incremental increase for me and my camera. 7) The promotion screen is definitely and improvement (well at least nice evolution) for me and finally, 8) the battery life is a big improvement over my 12 ProMax which some days had me down to under 20% by mid afternoon, now I am at 75-80% when I put on charger in evening after dark.”

So yes maybe smartphone’s are now matured, plateaued ect. But for the uses I put my iPhones through this is a series of important evolutionary improvements.

I skipped the 12, and I'm going to skip the 13 too. My 11 Pro works perfectly well and I really don't see any improvement that would justify spending $1,100 on a new one.

I will upgrade my S5 Watch, but mostly because I always give the old one to my mom, and she really needs the upgrade. If that wasn't the case, I'm not sure I would have upgraded this year either. Maybe, maybe not.

You’re gonna be waiting a looooooooong time for USB-C. As in, when pigs fly.
Not if you are in Europe. About bloody time they stopped that lightning nonsense. Usb C iPhone is coming very soon to the EU!!!
