Sounds vaguely familiar....

Ballmer was talking about the launch prices of the iPhone in that video, not repair costs. However, as it turns out, he was correct to laugh at the price. If pricing plays out with the Vision Pro as it did with the iPhone in 2007, I guess we can expect around a $1,200 price reduction on the Vision Pro in about three months. Plus, early adopters will get $600 Apple gift cards.

It was just a joke, and yeah you are 100% correct. Apple always sells high price items and it’s very rare that they misdiagnose a market, but it does happen. Of course this could certainly flop but time will tell.

They probably don't repair it for that price, maybe they just replace it with a refurb one?
Or more likely they’ll replace it with a new one because $2,400 is probably still significantly more than it costs to manufacture it. Why bother with repairing it or deal with the trouble of having a stock of refurbs on hand when they can charge you $2,400 and still make some profit on it. They’re giving Apple employees a 25 percent discount and charging them around $2,600. They’re still making a good profit on it at that price.

I guess you missed the part where I compared it against the MacBook Pro... you know, a portable device like the Vision Pro.

Want to compare against an iPad? Let's do that.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch is $2,399. 2 yr AC+ is $149. That's 6.21% of it's price.

iPad Pro 11-inch is $2,099. 2 yrs of AC+ is $129. That's 6.15% of the product's price.

The list prices on an iPad Pro isn't anywhere near $2K. You have stuffed a bunch of Apple sky-high BTO add-ons onto the device to lower the percentages. (if grossly pay Apple too much for the device then the 'insurance' gets 'cheaper' ... already have given them more money and profits than the insurance costs. ) That is just playing 3-card monty and misdirection.

Ballmer was not correct! Microsoft destroyed their smart phone and then Microsoft payed 11 Billion to buy Nokia's phones and destroyed their phones too! Where is Microsoft's smart phone today? My iPhone Pro Max costs a lot more than the original iPhone, more than twice as much! Let's not re-write history here just because you are biased against the Apple Vision Pro!

Let's be realistic though, the most common thing that can go wrong with this thing accidentally is probably going to be cracked glass. Anything else (camera failing, display going out, etc.) would likely be a normal warrantee claim within your 1 year.

So:

Cost to replace cracked glass with AppleCare+: $499+$299 deductible = $798
Cost to replace cracked glass without AppleCare+: $799

Cost to you if you don't crack the glass with AppleCare+: $499
Cost to you if you don't crack the glass without AppleCare+: $0

So you essentially just break even on your AppleCare+ if you make 1 claim for glass damage.

Curious to see how this thing evolves over time, but I have no desire(or free cash) to run out and buy one right now. Will it become the next big thing? Only time will tell. I just don’t see it becoming as ubiquitous as the iphone or Apple watch. Seems really niche. And an expensive niche at that. Meh 🫤

This is definitely not a device for the economically challenged. My AppleCard is looking at me like I did something wrong to it. 1TB with Zeiss lens inbound.

No it's not.

2 yrs of AC+ at $499 is 14.26% of $3,499 Vision Pro price

3 yrs of AC+ is $169 for a $3,599 Mac Studio. That's only 4.70% of the price of the Mac Studio

We can compare the price of AC+ coverage for portable device (Vision Pro) vs another portable device (MacBook Pro) if you'd like.

3 yrs of AC+ is $399 for a $3,499 MacBook Pro. While that's only 11.40% of the price of the MacBook Pro, you're getting 3 yrs vs 2 yrs with the Vision Pro.

These devices are going to break.

The Mac generally sits in one spot.

The AVP is going to collide with every corner of the space you’re using it in.

I mean, obviously some people will be careful, but just wait until you let someone you know use it. It’s getting broken. They encourage you to flail your arms around and with that high-quality pass-through, people will just walk around the house, not realizing there needs to be extra clearance for their face at all times.

I’ve bumped my controllers against my PSVR2 headset a couple times, but luckily it wasn’t super hard and luckily the front isn’t made of glass.

Sure, but what part are you most likely to break? The front glass right?

That is going to cost $800 regardless if you have AppleCare+ or not. The only difference is you paid $500 of that repair cost in advance.

The only way you come out on top with AppleCare+ is if you need to fix the glass more than once or somehow destroy the body/internals.

Indeed. Apple has priced it so it works out best for them.

I KNEW IT! I knew it was expensive to fix! That’s why you always get Apple Care
Apple just loves you.

Let’s make a super expensive product.
Let’s make it so hard to fix that repairs are super expensive.
Let’s sell them Apple Care+ as well.

And our most beloved customers will just suck it all up 🤗

No wonder my AAPL are through the roof 🥳

I was very interested in getting one but I hadn't considered the repair costs. This puts me off completely.

My only real use case is simulating an IMAX like experience for movies - I hope other competitors on the market will be able to do something like that as I don't fancy any of the other VR stuff at all
