If the environment and waste are really concerns, might it have made more sense to not include a cable at all?
The point is not to include stuff that isn't used. The USB-C to lightning cable will be used immediately by many people, and will used by more as time goes by (and they get a USB-C charger, for example with a new Mac).

Journalists who ask about cables not included are brain dead (not a rare condition in journalism).

The phone is cheaper this year (and much higher spec) so if a customer needs to buy a cable they already have savings from the cost of the phone.
....um.

iPhone 11 to iPhone 12 is a $130 price increase, not counting the $60 worth of accessories now removed from the box ($40 now that they lowered the prices).

Drance neglected to answer whether a screen protector is still needed with the new Ceramic Sheild front glass on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

I will certainly continue to have a (glass) screen protector put on no matter if it's made with nanoparticles from Thor's hammer, simply because it's far cheaper than a new screen, the worn oleophobic coating on the old one will be renewed with a new one and because scratches on a smartphone screen are just terrible.

I suspect those reasons are why she neglected to answer. 😁

Kinda hard to say "it makes no sense to include a USB-A cable" when the entire world is still USB-A, all infrastructure, all vehicles, 90% of the chargers people still have.

It would be nice to snap your fingers and magically change that reality to USB-C, but you can't. Shipping a cable that most people will throw in a drawer and use some older cable is pretty ironic quite frankly. Doesn't really matter that its "the better cable".
But most people already have USB-A to lightning cables, or can buy them cheaply. I disagree with keeping lightning, but I I mostly agree with the choice of going with USB-C on the other end.

Im not too sure about using my 16in MBP 96w charger on an iPhone.

That and the fact that materials which are stronger against shattering are usually weaker against scratches.

I "mostly agree" with it too, but you can't claim that it makes more sense than including a far more usable cable. Most people I know that will receive an iPhone 12 this year will have no use for the cable that comes with it. They'll need to use one they already have, or buy something else.

I will have to admit, I cannot stand listening to people such as this lady.
She is paid a LOT of money to promote the products of the company.
I'm not going to say she is deliberately lying about anything, she is just very skilled in focusing, saying and putting a positive spin on every aspect of the product she is being paid to say nice things about.

Basically a used car salesman, saying onto the good points.
When you really want to speak to the mechanic out the back who will tell you everything accurately.

Nice lady I'm sure, but it's almost not worth listening to anything she says.

That said, I know this is the job of these people, so nothing against her whatsoever.

Yep, she annoys me too...needs to get that eye fixed too.

I use it on my iPad Pro all the time...🤷‍♂️

and getting good environmental PR at the same time. Can we blame them? ;)
Blame? No. Good move for the company. Can we call them out and make sure as many people as possible realize that its BS and just an anti-customer move? Absolutely.

I can’t believe so many people are making excuses for the lack of charger.

yes, I do already have two usb lightning charging bricks/cables from previous iPhones. They both have burnt pins on both sides of the lightning connector and only work half of the time when plugged in, facing the right direction.

That’s what they want me to charge my brand new phone with? That or an android charger????

Maybe a little off topic, but I wonder why the interviewer never used the footage from his quite complex setup with which he’s obviously filming himself using his iPhone’s front camera. Just using it as a mirror to check his posture, forgot to push the button to start recording ...or was it Apple telling him not to use the footage for any reason..?

But the new usb charger wouldn't include a USB-C to lightning cable.

exactly, i.e. if Apple include the C cable, which cannot be used with existing chargers, then folks will go out and buy a new charger to use the included C cable rendering the [environment] exercise pointless.

Had Apple not included any cables, then folks would continue to use their mountains of existing chargers and cables.

that's the point

Is the iphone 12 the peak? Are we going to see the inevitable 'regression to the mean' in the coming years?

I no longer get excited for new product launches, don't have a burning desire to own the new tech immediately. Maybe I am just getting old and grumpy.
I aspired to be old and grumpy about upgrading. I thought for sure the 11Pro would be with me two years this time. Then I realized, dang, I actually am getting older, so I better enjoy all the new phones while my rapidly aging eyes can still make out what’s on the displays. 🤔 So, on the morning of preorders, plastic was melted. I regret nothing.

I think she "failed to answer" because the question is leading. A screen protector was never "required". If you treat your iPhone with the care and respect a $1,000 mobile device deserves you don't break or scratch the screen. Not saying baby it, but two fingers holding it over pavement, using it over the sink or toilet...
Do you put a screen protector on the windshield of your $25,000 car, it's FAR more likely to chip and crack with normal use.

Not everyone has USB-C chargers though? They shouldn't have included any cables in my opinion, since folks will either not use this one [since they will use the numerous USB-A cables & chargers] or go out and buy a new USB-Charger, rendering the initiative [claimed environment] redundant
This would be an objectively correct statement if 100% of Apple Customers bought a new usb charger and/or cable. If even one of the customers does not, it makes the statement no better than an uninformed opinion.

Absolutely.
How about removing the charger citing environmental reasons while at the same time pushing IN THE SAME YEAR an entirely new charging method (energetically/environmentally wasteful) that people will buy and that might eventually replace lightning in future models, leading to the affirmation of new proprietary charging solution? All this while the word was finally converging on USB-C. For the planet eh? シ

It isn't a complaint. It is pointing out the ridiculous hypocrisy of Apple saying "you have enough chargers, use those" while shipping the new phone with a cable that doesn't connect to "those".
Not that hard to understand.
Actually is hard to understand and the above on the face of it, doesn't make any sense. Apple is not at the point where nothing except the phone is in the box. Not including a charger and earpods, seems a great environmental win. In the meantime, Apple probably did it's homework and not unsurprisingly discovered that many if not most of it's customers have a charger and cable. Rather than include a usb-a cable, Apple decided to include a usb-c.

It's still a win-win-win all around even if a few people do not actually have a means to charge the iphone 12, but will buy it anyway.

But can they really stand on the roof talking about saving the environment by producing and shipping a cable that many people won’t use? Seems a tad wasteful, no?

Exactly. Without real precise numbers, it's really hard to understand the true environmental impact of this. I believe, overall, this will have a positive effect (perhaps marginal but) on the environment. Too bad that costumers have to pay for it while Apple gets the good PR and the economical benefits, but...that's another separate issue, IMHO.

To be honest, the whole USB-C to Lightning change without a power adapter was a bold move. Not one I am happy due to having a USB-A adapter. So now, if I want a new iPhone and take advantage of the faster charge times, I have to purchase an extra adapter.

Not environmental nor does it make me happy about shelling extra $ for a $1k phone to work as intended.
