I can't believe the number of people that buy cases these days. I've dropped my iPhone 12 already from table height on to a hardwood floor and not a scuff.

You are more likely to drop your phone inside when getting changed or removing it from charging. Even if you do drop your phone on concrete, a stupid case isn't going to stop front damage.

Enjoy your phone and get Apple Care, they do monthly payments now!

Lucky. Any drop can result in any type damage or not. It's so individually variable.

Years ago I bought a new ipad 2, and got a case for it. Gave it to my wife as we were exiting the car, who promptly dropped it on the driveway and the screen smashed to smithereens. Point is you never know.

I’m a complete klutz, have an entire upstairs of hardwood and two kids who run around and could easily knock it off as it’s being charged. No way I’m ever forgoing a case for a phone, especially since they surpass $1,000 Cdn. now.

Currently on the 8-plus and found it very slippery. Grabbed a Spigen case with side grips. Phone remains immaculate.

The whole idea of this MagSafe return is botched and useless.

don’t put it in the iPhone and use the extra space for a larger battery or the Max’s camera sensors.

however, I would love MagSafe on my MacBook Pro.

On the other hand this could be a tempest in a teapot, similar to the iPhone bending issue of yesteryear.

I honestly had to look this up! I’m not so great at knowing or understanding idioms.

glad to have learned something today from you thank you. Agreed.

Who is we? People want advanced state of the art iphones, not dumb phones with big batteries. Apple would be chided if they released a dumb phone with a big battery. And there is no pleasing everybody, we all have our unique needs and wants.

who said dumb phones?! I said drop the magnet "stick" charging method, because I imagine that majority of people will not spend $40 to buy the charging pad that gives a slower speed over their included USB-C charger. Instead we get a larger battery.

Whats better? longer lasting battery or buying $40 charger that charges slower?!

There have been other smartphones with 'magsafe' in the past without this issue, ie Palm Pre. To be fair it was designed such that using a case wasn't as important.. anyone remember when phones were durable enough to be used without cases? Yea Apple started the whole delicate-scratch-gate stuff with iPods.

lol, this is so funny! Palm introduces this "accessory" back in 2009, and Apple introduces it as next-gen tech in 2020. To be fair, the delicate scratch design is a necessarily for the current design all screen thin phones so its not an Apple fault, more like a science/tech bottleneck.

I still feel like there is a lot of room in the market for a small smartphone like the palm pre on the market.

Yeah, it looks like the first generation MagSafe charger and probably MagSafe Duo charger as well should be avoided until Apple finds a way to prevent these ugly marks from happening to cases. Additionally, the MagSafe chargers are useless for charging older iPhones unless you don’t mind it taking several hours.

I believe it depends on the individual as to their use case of battery life. More battery life from the xs max but less than the iphone 11 pro max? I don't know, I'm just opining on it in the forum. I for one would buy the magsafe charger, because it has some advantages over plugging in the lightning cable.

do people really care if the case is scratched? 🤦‍♀️

I don't think its a matter of caring if the case gets scratched. Its more of just being irritated that Apple's wireless charger is going to damage the case

Walk outside and drop it on concrete and get back to us. Also, the front of the phone is supposed to be less shatterproof than the back of the phone.

No, it wasn't a 'case', the Pre had a removable back plate, unlike the iPhone, so basically you'd buy this back cover, and replace the stock one. The video below shows how you'd attach/detach it:

Edit: Rewatching that video is so interesting, that was 2009! They were truly ahead of their time.

Pre was great for a first year release. Decent screen for its time (until iPhone 4). Webos. The features light years ahead of Apple. Homebrew community that Palm at least looked the other way on vs Apple who opposed jailbreaking.

I do remember the magnetic puck needed lots of power. Drained my car battery when attempted to use as mount. Still awesome tho.

I’ve no doubt I’d still be using webos. I reluctantly switched to Apple. Wish Microsoft had bought palm.

MAGSAFE is A GIMMICK. Apple is now on its last downslope falling down from the mountain peak created by Steve Jobs. Apple needs to find someone who can run the company like Steve did. Otherwise, the inertia left with the demise of Steve Jobs won’t last any longer.

Yes, it is. I have broken my screen only once years ago and I was using a third party case that was pretty thin. With the leather case from Apple I have dropped my iphones multiple times and nothing at all has happened to them. I am talking that last time I literally broke the corner of a leather case and the phone is absolutely perfect. Without a case, the would have scratched the corner of the phone for sure, if not broken the screen or the back.
