I wonder what happens to your credit cards if you unwittingly put your iPhone in the same pocket as a regular non-shielded wallet? Also I hope none of you work in an industrial setting, because if you do, you’re going to have a ring of iron dust collecting on the back of your phone.

I am a big Apple fan but I fear this system is going to be a disaster even if you don’t use the charging puck.
I work in a forge. Once took my AirPods on the floor in my pocket for the day.... what a mess.

I’ll be keeping my phone in a case for sure or the back will be scratched to hell in no time.

Even my iPhone X gets steel dust clinging to a few spots on the front of the phone (And it is indeed scratched to hell)

🤷‍♂️ Not sure why this was a hype anyways. Wireless charging was overly hype too.
Yep. I plug in for fast charging, and have a cheap ikea Qi charging pad for overnight. Works as a fine solution on the 8+ and my leather case has no rings.

Put a piece of paper between them.
Then again, maybe it will catch fire

I doubt fire would pose a problem, given the temperatures wouldn’t exceed anything abnormal, it’s more or less, it would be tacky to use paper. Again, it’s a non-issue, I’d rather have a minor shadow of a ring than using paper to Mitigate something so meaningless.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't design some kind of reinforced ring on the cases to begin with. It'd like free advertising for the MagSafe feature when you're using your phone in public, and could double as a way to hide any wear and tear on your case from the charger.

There was the MagSafe and then there is the new imposter. IMHO the new MagSafe is pathetic product, an insult when compared to the real deal. The original saved countless laptops but the new one only leaves rings of shame behind.

Till we meet again MagSafe...

I on the other hand was really looking forward to this MagSafe "stuff" ... yea I miss the mac version sure ... sure it's gimmicky, but now with 80% limit I've been reading about, smaller battery, and marking up the case, etc. I'm less and less excited about it. As far as accessories I ordered couple of the 20W bricks, but that might be it.

I guess this also answers the question I had - why the leather cases were not released yet. I wonder if there will be a leather version without the magnets, as I'm probably gonna stick to the mophie wireless charger and the 20W bricks I just bought.

We’re in the middle of a pandemic, increasingly freakish weather, and global political unrest, but some marks on a phone case is a sh*t show. LOL.
Warning customers after release. MagSafe not being strong enough for a phone holder. MagSafe not strong enough to hold the official wallet accessory in a pocket. Super slow charging with MagSafe.

And yet, I'm guessing it will be a successful because Apple usually does it's homework and gets it right, much of the time. The leather thing, some people may not care and I'm sure a software update will resolve the charging issues. Nothing here is a big deal.

Well to be fair, some people (myself included) don't like to spend money on a case that is going to be damaged through no fault of our own. I get that its not a huge deal, but if my case is going to get marks on it I'd prefer it be through me doing something to cause it and not from simply attaching it to the charger that Apple is marketing as the next big thing.

I always thought most (or all) folk buy a case in order to protect the phone, treating the case as the sacrificial skin. In other words, there's an expectation of the case protecting the phone from drops as well as wear over time from "normal things" like putting it in your pocket, resting it on a table repeatedly, etc. I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting a case to remain perfect but I do think that's a pretty impossible ask.

There was clearly a design flaw in the iphone 4 that was addressed with the 4s. "You're holding it wrong", is a great euphemism to show everything wasn't peaches and cream under Steve Jobs as is claimed by some, where Apple is crumbling under Tim Cook today.

I personally have never heard or read that everything was peaches and cream under Jobs. But there sure seemed to be more peaches and cream on average, and less occasional rotten eggs, under his leadership than after. That’s been my experience.

A reinforced ring won’t help. It’s leather, anything that pushes into it in the same spot for a sustained period of time is liable to leave a mark. They’d probably need to redesign the puck to use a more cushion like material. The issue isn’t the structure of the case internally failing, it’s that the external material is a malleable one.

Wallets that fit tightly will also show signs of where cards are etc. It’s how leather behaves. Not to say nothing could be done, but it probably would start with a redesign of the charging puck.

Maybe they could make it out of magnets so the wallet could actually stay in place

Now couldn't we all have saved us the trouble by releasing a cheaper iphone or one with a larger battery that everyone will be happy with instead of this inferior technology?!

Who is we? People want advanced state of the art iphones, not dumb phones with big batteries. Apple would be chided if they released a dumb phone with a big battery. And there is no pleasing everybody, we all have our unique needs and wants.

They should just come out with a case that shows the ring already. Then it’s no surprise.
As it stands I’ll just see it as a Indixation of who uses the MagSafe. The only thing I see that I really do not like is the heat from it. And for that reason using the 18 watt charger to charge slower will probably generate less heat. That for me is a win and one more reason not to buy their 20 watt adapter.

Its not at all about it remaining perfect. I actually enjoy when a patina develops on the phone from normal every day use. But there is a differnce between that and damage being caused by the MagSafe charger. At least to me there is.

So you’re using magnets. Magnets stick together. The strength of the magnet will increase pressure. Pressure will cause indentation. Hmm.... so if you think about it logically, of course this will happen. I see this as a non issue.

There have been other smartphones with 'magsafe' in the past without this issue, ie Palm Pre. To be fair it was designed such that using a case wasn't as important.. anyone remember when phones were durable enough to be used without cases? Yea Apple started the whole delicate-scratch-gate stuff with iPods.

I wonder if down the road Apple will produce non-MagSafe variants of their silicone and leather cases for iPhone 12 phones.

Or if there are third party ones who will do so. I’ll bet they’ll be cheaper for those who now don’t want the MagSafe feature.

Or are there third party ones who released those already?
