This is not so much a watch feature as it is a WatchOS feature. When I put my phone in Airplane mode my watch goes into Airplane mode. When I turn on Airplane mode my watch doesn't come out of Airplane mode i assume because the bluetooth is turned off so no signal can be sent to the watch, fair enough. However, when I mute my phone my watch doesn't mute? I can assign a custom ringtone on my phone (which are tiny by the way) but the Apple Watch doesn't recognize or rather store them. For example I created a "silent" ring tone but the WatchOS must only have one ringtone.

Today I did set it to Workout/Other and it worked GREAT!! I may well be swimming with it all the time now. Only thing I noticed is the battery seems to get depleted faster. Just means I have to charge before I go.

Why do people want to wear watches and have phones in a pool? Sounds scary.
Because the pool is our workout and we'd like it recorded on the watch. Otherwise, I have to (say) the elliptical recumbent bike so I meet my move goal - that's nuts. This way it's always with me except when I charge it like I will do soon!

Yeah -- next time you start a Workout, lift the watch and you'll see the green LEDs brightly lit up.

What I haven't checked into is whether a BT- connected HR strap draws less battery power than the LEDs. Either way, more power is needed than usual day-to-day stuff.

I've noticed that on the elliptical but find it especially bright in the pool where the watch data is amazingly readable. I suspect also the continuous sampling of heart rate during a work out use up the battery also. So both together are a strain on my 38" watch. I've loved the watch since Day 1 with it - but now that I see if works during my pool workouts, and my heavy flow showers - I'm totally enthralled. I showered with it since Day 1, but gingerly held my left arm (with the watch) outside the direct flow.

much less power.

To me, it doesn't matter. A one hour workout using the workout app and therefore the LEDs burn 10% of the battery - if I add my Bluetooth headphones it burns 1-2% more. Just not worth the brain cells to think about the difference. :)

In all honesty, after an hour workout, I need a shower and the battery is back to 100% by the time I am done. :)

Of course, I am one of the lucky ones who rarely, if ever, has a problem with the watches heart rate monitoring during workouts. Can't blame anyone for wanting to try/use other options.

^^ Can I have this on my watch too??

Has it been confirmed that there will be a Apple Watch 2 this year? I don't see this being a product that has a yearly refresh cycle. I think a 2 or 3 year refresh would be more suitable for the product, surely people don't want to drop big money on the high end versions just to see them outdated in a few months.

Maybe Apple should really look into some way of upgrading the internals of these things. The casing will end up iconic I am sure, so should be good for many, many years.

So long as Apple can make meaningful advances on a yearly basis, they will continue to update it as fast as they can. The only possible thing that can come from making it better faster is more sales. If they were to leave this model on sale for another year, sales would slow to a trickle.

Please Please GPS and water proof..I'd buy one in a heartbeat.. I't would become the best running watch overnight..No serious runner would ever run with a dirty great big phone strapped to their arm, now a :apple:Watch with a Strava App.. perfect
In the market for a new running watch to replace my Nike Sportswatch checking out the competition but will hang fire till the 2nd gen :apple:Watch comes out.

Same bands as AW1
way better fitness capabilities
better battery
custom watch faces

The custom Watchfaces would be pretty awesome, like I have the Pipboy watchface like a few other people do on here and it'd be awesome to see him animated, maybe doing different things every time you raise your wrist.

So many possibilities!

I'm pretty doubtful that the next generation AW will have GPS, as much as I'd like it as well. I don't think that they are going to be able to keep the size where its at, keep battery life at least as good as it is if not a bit better, while making the other improvements they'd like, and also fit a GPS chip in there.

That said, I ran with the Nike watch myself until the glue came apart and Nike was no longer replacing them (gave me more than original cost of the watch in store credit though despite being out of warranty). I then bought a Garmin 225 after the first AW was released, and have run with that for all of last season. At Christmas I received an AW and have been running with it a bit to see how it works since this is my off-season so I don't care about the hard-core metrics. The good is that it's great to have (some selective) notifications and the ability to take phone calls or play music all from your wrist. It's great to have a direct link to Strava with no syncing needed. I carry the phone in a Flip Belt and you can't even tell its there with the phone at my back. It will be great when I travel and don't know my routes to be able to load one up ahead of time and get indicators on my wrist (to my knowledge there is no software that can really do this yet - a planned route - not plain GPS directions).

Negatives are that the HR monitor isn't very good. I personally think this is because of how they have chosen to design the back of the watch prioritizing aesthetics and comfort over performance. It's not even close to my Garmin. Right now, apps can't update in the background, so even though the Strava app is what's there when I raise my wrist, it takes a second to update, so no instantaneous glances. Dealing with the touch screen on the go or with gloves on is a hassle. I can usually get it done, but I don't even think about this with the Garmin's physical buttons.

If the Nike watch is still working, I think you are doing the right thing to wait. Apple might surprise us and release one with a GPS and a better HR monitor. If not, lots of other options to choose from out there!

What can the AW realistically get? I didn't buy the version one as it doesn't have any features that I actually need/want but I'm curious about version 2 as that might be one I might consider. The problem is that I don't know what the AW need to have in order for me to need/want it. I don't wear any watch and I don't see anything that is really "needed". I do like the notification to be on your wrist etc. but not enough to justify the purchase.
I'm sure I'm not alone and to be honest I would like to have a desire for it but right now its not there.

What could it be? Anyone?

1 Faster apps and faster connection to iPhone apps.
2 More accurate readings for running. Quite simply it should check in with the GPS periodically, like the cycling workout app does. After a while, the distance assessment fails, which means the pace readings are wrong.
3 Slimmer.
4 Able to do more without the iPhone.
5 More health readings.
