how often do you "lose" a watch strapped to your wrist, really??

Well for one, if u loose your watch it u obviously wouldn't be wearing it. And why wouldn't u loose a watch ?

We loose our phones,

The same is be true for watch.... maybe less often, because their worn, but put them down, and go out, but still possible.

The idea of a wrist worn device of being lost seeing as a "well it probably doesn't really make much sense" to find a "watch" since we can always get another one. less practical because we seem to wear it all the time vs an iPhone where it would be more valid as we put it down and loose more often, thus makes more sense to track it when we "do" loose it.

Its still a device... and its wrist worn.... so shouldn't we be allowed to find our smart watch as well ?

WHY CAN'T I PING MY SHOES TO FIND OUT WHERE THEY ARE? WHY CAN'T I SEE MY T SHIRT ON A MAP? WHY GOD, OH WHY, HASN'T APPLE INVENTED A PAIR OF SUNGLASSES I CAN BUY AND TRACK ON THE INTERNET!?!?

Seriously though, a phone can be lost in any number of ways. It is something which you hold, and therefore when you are not using it and can't hold it you have to put it down. some people have moments of madness and put them in odd places and forget. it could also fall out of the pocket or bag you put it in, especially if it's a back pocket or a loose one.

that doesn't happen to a watch you are wearing. if i'm not using it to check the time, ummm, i'm still wearing it. for me to not be wearing it i have to deliberately take it off.

your example before involved losing it in a bar. that means, taking it off in a bar. would you take off a rolex in a bar and put it down? why would you take off a watch, in a bar. it makes no sense. the question really should be, why WOULD you lose a watch?

Old age is rushing towards me, but creeping senility has not yet taken hold. The only time I take off my watch during the day is when I'm in the pool. I'm not going to lose my watch, but I would like it if Apple told me that the pool wouldn't void the warranty.

Oops, I've voided my warranty. :p

Won't be upgrading I don't think as don't see a need but improvements they can make is bet try life, gps, quicker app launches.

Does anyone think the next watch will have always on low power display? To me, that is the feature that would make this watch much more desirable to a large number of people.

next watch? no. but apple have recently bought some companies and factories specialising in display tech, so apple watch 3, perhaps.

As this AW is using OLED Apple could do an always on display now. They likely choose not to due to battery life concerns. The Moto 360 always on still isn't always on and it dies much faster when using it (of course it is also using LCD tech, but i digress).

-Circular round design that looks like expensive traditional watches.
-Better battery life
-More watch faces or open it up to 3rd party app support
-FaceTime Video
-4G model like the cellular iPad's

like you said, they chose not to because of battery concerns. The technology has not changed and so it will be the same issue come watch 2. They are working on even lower power displays which would make it possible come watch 3, if the stories are to believed (an OLED with the image retention qualities of epaper )

If only e-paper didn't have crappy refresh rate...

I owned an Apple Watch but returned it because to me the limitations were too significant to use it as an everyday device. Gen 2 of the Apple Watch seriously interests me especially once all apps are native. This could take a while.

One area I would like to see a change is in the charging. I found the inductive charging cumbersome even though it is clever and in a sense futuristic. The charger is far too big in my opinion. Why doesn't Apple use Lightening which they own or make it USB-C which seems to be the long term winner for a single port.

I'm interested in using Apple Watch for sports and fitness but without GPS and more sensors it just isn't compelling enough.

I find Apple Watch a beautiful device but it has a long long way to go and serious improvements needed for it to be considered a success - regardless of actual unit sales.

I hope at some point whether its Gen 2 or 3 or 4 etc... that Apple will make an Apple Watch which works independently of the iPhone. Then I imagine it could really succeed.

waterproofing, for one. orientation, for another.

Thinner
Faster, especially opening apps
Less dependence on iPhone
More fitness tracking ability, increased number of sesnsors. Ability to track reps/sets for example.

A a minimum for me to buy one it would need to have:

A 48 hour+ battery life with normal use
Waterproof - at least for pool use
GPS in the watch
Non reliant upon iphone (but how about ability to let apps run on iphone or watch depending upon remaining battery life of watch?)

Without that it doesn't appeal to me.

Hey guys, i'm new around here, nice to meet you all! :)

I received my Apple Watch yesterday for my Christmas present (38mm Silver Sport), and I've fallen in love with it! It's a beautiful piece of tech and I can definitely see myself buying the next gen and/or the third gen in the future, especially if they have all the colours that they have now, as i'd absolutely love the 42mm Rose Gold Sport :D

But anyway, this thread is all about the next gen, so i'ma put in what i'd like in the next one!
  • A bit more Waterproof than it is already (I don't wanna feel like i have to worry about it if I go swimming)
  • Maybe some sort of GPS involved (so it's not as dependant on the iPhone for going for a walk or run)
  • Apple-made Smart bands/battery bands, maybe with the option to extend your battery by a day or two to enable possible tracking of sleep (that way you could charge the band and watch during the time you're not really using it)
  • Better loading times with apps.
  • Apple allowing more third party watch faces.
  • Maybe some more bands in general?

The stuff i'm not into, that others and news reports are suggesting are:
  • A round circle face (Hell no! There's nothing wrong with the rounded square face ;o)
  • Facetime Camera (i mean, what's the point of that? Who can hold their wrist far away from their face to be able to facetime someone without have a huge closeup of your face? And who the hell can hold their arm up long enough for that? I couldn't do that lol)
  • Cellular capabilities (So you really want a sim card in your watch? I really don't think that should be a thing....You'd be paying for contracts for BOTH your phone and watch, that'd be expensive...)

Welcome. Glad you like it.

On comment about tracking sleep. Many people here use the watch to track sleep win one of the available apps. I use sleep pulse. I charge my watch around 9-10pm so it is fully charged by 10pm and then wear it to track sleep and the silent alarm. I usually wake with around 90% or higher still available. No need to charge in the morning, but you could take it off while you shower and it is back to 100% but typically my day ends with 40-50% left at 9pm to repeat the cycle.

I didn't even know there was a app ;o Thank you though, i'll get it onto my watch tonight! :)

-Bigger
-old band compatible in 42&38mm
-2x performance minimum
-NO FaceTime camera
-Digital Crown that doesn't stick when wet
-truly standalone wifi/user access to it
-ONLY native apps(in tandem with true standalone wifi usage)

I have only used it for a couple of days now but to my mind the next generation needs to speed it up a bit and add better battery life and (maybe) add GPS for the Sport model for people to take it out without the phone.

I got mine as a present at Christmas and to me the notifications is only thing that I really like or see the point of. The only fitness item I ever use is a stopwatch but I tried out the monitor with the one at my gym which I know is reasonably accurate from previous use. The Apple watch wasn't totally useless but 40secs after an interval the gym HRM was tracking that my heart rate was coming down gradually as I would expect. The watch was lagging behind by about 30secs so - at least in my case - I am not getting accurate data.

I think Apple marketed this product wrong; they should have firmly positioned it as an iPhone accessory, most people I speak to are surprised that it has no real functionality without the phone.

I owned the Apple Watch for a week and returned it because I felt that I'd spent too much to justify it (got the stainless steel with classic leather band for $800). Yeah, yeah, I could've gotten the $400 Sports model but felt like the matte finish was a little gadgety-looking for my taste and I wanted the scratch-resistance of the sapphire. I really loved having it but felt the only thing it really added to my day was letting me see text messages 2 seconds earlier than I would've anyway. I thought the fitness stuff was promising and I did like the little "you've been sitting for an hour" motivation to get up and move around. So I am interested in a next gen watch because lately now that another friend of mine has it, I'm finding myself missing it. Funnily, he's the one that talked me into returning it originally, but he got his as a gift from his boss and now he loves it. Haha.

All that said, I'm finding myself wondering what changes would make the next gen a must-buy for me. I hear a lot of people say independence from the phone, but honestly I have my phone on me all the time, or at least in the same building, so I really don't know that it's very appealing for me to have to pay another cellular bill to maintain a Watch sim card. Maybe a wifi only model? Even then, it's not really independent because I'd only be able to get iMessages and not phone calls. I could see a hypothetical situation where I'd like to go out and leave my phone at home to keep my pockets empty, but I do feel naked without my phone so it's not really an issue for me.

The two biggest advances that would make the Apple Watch 2 day one purchases for me:

--An always-on display! I would like a watch that displays the time all the time, even if it's in a low-power dim mode. I was put off a bit by glancing down at a blank slab and having to make the wrist-twisty motion to see the time. I know, first world problems, but I'm just not used to the idea of a watch that needs to be "turned on" to show the time. Often I'm typing and it just makes sense to me that I'd be able to just flick my eyes downward and not have to activate the thing. I know this brings up battery issues and maybe it's years before the battery tech advances enough for Apple to pull this off, but that would be a game-changer for me when it comes to Apple Watch.

--Deeper health sensors. One of the really early rumors I'd heard was that the sensors in the watch would be sophisticated enough to warn the wearer of things like an imminent heart-attack or stroke. That sounded sci-fi to me too, but I know hospitals have little finger-worn monitors that really can read a lot of cardiac info and there are already sensors that can alert the user to dangerous pulse-rate changes. Google is apparently developing heart-attack and even cancer detectors. Maybe it's still way too early to imagine this kind of thing working on a watch and I have doubts on the reliability of the AW's heart-rate sensor as it is, and regulatory hurdles may also be delaying them, but having an actual life-saving health-monitoring system built in to its sensors would make the watch a must-have.

-old band compatible in 42&38mm

YES!

I forgot to mention this in my little wishlist, but this NEEDS to be a thing with the next gen, at least until maybe the third gen.
I mean, who wants to buy the first gen product, then purchase an additional 4-5 bands, costing double, triple the price of the actual Watch itself, then have ALL the bands outdated within a year along with the Watch?

I think I have spent or been gifted about 750 bucks worth of bands, it would be silly to not allowed gen 1 adopters to simply get a ss with sport band.

What would make more sense is to introduce a larger size to force us to make a decision to abandon the old watch, while at the same time also release a new set of bands and/or case materials. Apple makes even more money on the chance that I upgrade or go larger and spend more on bands.
