They've been selling the same product literally since the Series 4.
No one would bother to buy the new models if the 4 was still on sale.

Speak for yourself. While the step from S7 to S8 is indeed small, the other upgrades were significant enough.

Browse these forums from 1 year ago and you'll see the same arguments being made for S6 to S7.
There is a reason if Apple phased 4, 5, 6, 7 all after 1 year, and kept selling the Series 3 fossil for 5 full years.
They would have cannibalized the following model because of the weak upgrades, that's why.
The Series 3, on the other hand, posed no such threat.

The same arguments being made doesn‘t mean they were just as valid as maybe this year. Of course how much (or how little) you care about a new feature varies wildly from user to user. I can only tell you why I personally upgraded from 4 to 5 (always-on display making the Watch look much more like a real watch), 5 to 6 (noticeably faster CPU, blood oxygen sensor) and 6 to 7 (bigger display with smaller bezels, much faster charging). If all of these features mean nothing to you, by all means stick to the 4, it‘s still a nice Watch. But it is not „literally the same“ as the 5, 6 or 7.

I have a series 4 and am also looking at upgrading but not sure on the s7 or s8. I prefer the silver rather than the starlight aluminium and the 7 only doesn't have the silver
yes they do.... i looked at one in the apple store yesterday!

Wristcam, a niche accessory that adds a video-chat camera to the Apple Watch, is getting a bit of an upgrade alongside watchOS 9 this coming week.

I agree with jumping to a new AW each year seems kind of silly with such small improvements added.
For me im on my Series 2 and yes now i am thinking about the Series 8 but ill be honest that if my S2 was still receiving the latest oS updates i probably wouldn't even think about the S8 as im happy with the rest of what my S2 does.

I pulled out my Series 2 Space Black Stainless Steel AW last week, to wear for running, workouts, etc… I was using it while waiting for the Apple Event today to see if any of the series 8 features would cause me to return the AW 7 SS that I’d purchased a couple of weeks prior. Didn’t want to risk marking up the S7 SS in case I decided to return it.

I was surprised the S2 still worked well. Slow between swipes for sure….but the fitness features worked perfectly and the watch is still without a mark in the body (DLC coating on the Space Black SS) or the Sapphire display. Nice!

I should try and sell it for $100. It would be a great watch for someone wanting to use it for the basics!

Yeah my Space Black SS S2 is still in mint condition as well and your right most of the functions work but a little sluggish at times....the only things ive noticed sometimes that dont work with the fitness app is it won't record the map or sometimes the heart rate graph or record the exercise mins (rings) when i start a Outdoor Walk.
I have no idea if its from the Watch it self being too old or that just happens at random with any series of Watch??

The incremental features are so small from AW5 on that makes you wonder if Apple had already hit the wall on how much it can do with wrist watch. I meant 1 whole year Apple could only figure out adding 1 new sensor and crash detection? Even crash detection seems to be just an extension of fall detection which AW has forever. Doesn’t look like Apple spending much time in the App Store and software side of things either. This partial explains why AW platform is being abandoned by 3rd party. I think this is the byproducts of having engineers WFH. It really shows.

imo the S7 is the better value especially in europe but if you plan to use the watch for the next 5-6 years its probably better to pick up the S8. Maybe there will be awesome stuff in the future with the new sensors.

But I'm happy with my new S7. I downloaded the RC WatchOS 9 and it feels like a new watch (it is but I had already the SS 6 Graphite and both look nearly identical)

Gonna try out the low power mode today

I am kind of disappointed in the Apple Watch and ever year I think "this update was so minor that next year must be huge" and perhaps next year WILL be huge...but I think I'm finally upgrade my launch-day Series 4. A YOY upgrade hasn't been worth it since the always on display, but the improvements really build if you wait. Compared to the Series 4 the Series 8 has:

  • 20% larger display
  • 20% faster SoC
  • Always on display
  • Blood oxygen sensor
  • Fast charging
  • "3rd generation" heart monitor and the sensors.
  • 32GB of storage (vs 16GB)

Kind of what I felt with my S4 last year. I felt it was time to change it to the upgraded S7 and swapped my SS-S4 to a SBTi-S7 just to have a new colour as well.

Haven't regretted a day. Now that international roaming is coming to the S5 and newer, that is a sweet bonus as well.

I don't remember people talking about what a big upgrade the S7 was - quite the opposite. Slightly larger display. That's it. We didn't get the redesign we were expecting, and then we found out that the performance wasn't improved, either. And now the S8 ... more of the same. Really disappointing 😞
I was so hyped for the 7… it was going to be the one! I was ready to buy a stainless steel model on launch day… but when it turned out to be basically the 6 (which I had already decided I would pass on), I decided to wait for the 8 (or potentially the “Watch Pro” as we had speculated early on). Then the 8 was announced to be Series 6.2 (and the Ultra is too rugged for my everyday office look).

Come on Series 9! Please don’t end up being a Series 6.3!

How come Apple doesnt allow you to select product for comparison?
I want to compare 7 to 8 but there is no option to change these comparisons to see side by seide
They don’t let you do direct side-by-side comparisons with the Watch because it would be easy to identify how little has actually changed. I think it’s a fairly deceptive marketing tactic, really.

If anything it has made me bond with my 5. I bought it on a deal after the 6 came out and always treated it as a stop gap watch, I waited for the 7 - a ‘meh’ update - now the 8 snoozefest.
(Ultra too big and ugly for me)

Now I come to realise it does everything I need it too plus it is SSSB which is the coolest colour of them all and only available as Hermes now.
Battery should hold until the 9

But seriously..... WHERE are you finding deals on the 7? Everywhere I look it's either still full price or just a few dollars off.... i already get military veteran discount.... the 8 is the same price or cheaper!!!!!!!!!!!! i want a deal on a 7..... but just can't find one!

I want a 7 in midnight or SS graphite. I don't care for the starlight color and not willing to buy one just to save a couple of dollars. The only 41mm that amazon has at your link is MORE ($389) than I can buy a brand new 8

a brand new 8 aluminum 41 mm with sport band is $359

target also has them (7) at full price... at that point... again... apple military store is cheaper to get a brand new 8!

The Apple refurbished store has what you want. Your military discount stacks on top of the refurbished discount as well.

41mm Midnight (w/Cellular) is $341
41mm SS Graphite is $458

+1, a really nice upgrade from the AW4 to the AW8!! And, a really nice upgrade to an AW7…if you can find one at a significant discount.
THIS is what i'm looking for! i have 2 series 4 watches.... i'm willing to save money and get a series 7 (41 mm) if i can find a deal! but every "deal" i find is the same or more than i can get a brand new 8 with the military store discount!

target is still selling their series 7 watches at full price!

even the watches at the apple refurbished store are less than $10 cheaper than what i can get new (i don't need cellular and even all the alum versions are gps & cellular AND i get to choose a band new vs a sport band i already have!)

i just can't find any true deals on the 7 for a 41 mm
