Also its beginning to show how stretched thin apples teams are and how they’re attempting to save money. The iPhone 14, series 8 watch prove that. They’re recycling chips now like crazy and still charging premium pricing

I have a series 4 and I don't think I'm upgrading again this year just because barely anything changed and I'm annoyed at the current color selection.

The 8 is basically the 7. I’ve owned every Apple Watch but this might be the least exciting update ever. I went with the Ultra, because Apple basically made 8 = 7.

I truly thought once they revealed the Ultra that it would help me to make up my mind with what AW to go for this year but pre order day happened and yeah i didnt end up ordering any for the Watch :/

I know once seeing the Ultra during the event it wasn't a watch for me, so that rules it out.

I reverted back to maybe Space Black Stainless Hermes Edition....but i wanted the pure black leather strap but couldn't find it in the Apple Store App... later on when i did find you could manually customised it was last years black band the shipping dates had changed to mid October :(

Im using my S2 Black Stainless/Link Watch at the moment and i just dont know if its a great idea to spend almost $2,000 (AU) to jump to the S8 which the shape looks very similar with mine.
I dont know...maybe im just overthinking it??

I have seen several people on here state that the Series 8 temperature sensor is only for women tracking ovulation. I just watched the Apple Watch Event again and unless I misunderstood, the temperature sensor will take a reading overnight every 5 seconds and it is accurate within 0.1 degree celsius. The doctor then started talking again about ovulation.

I think that even if you are male, you will still get readings overnight / while you are sleeping. If my interpretation is correct, that means both genders will be able to chart a baseline and note when one might be getting sick.

Series 7 was an unexpectedly big upgrade given the size of the watch. Series 8 is a very small upgrade from Series 7, maybe one of the most incremental. Still a good buy for those on older models. I’m very happy with my green AW7, not a very common model in the world of apple watches
I don't remember people talking about what a big upgrade the S7 was - quite the opposite. Slightly larger display. That's it. We didn't get the redesign we were expecting, and then we found out that the performance wasn't improved, either. And now the S8 ... more of the same. Really disappointing 😞

I think the temperature readings (like the blood oxygen sensor on Series 6) also play into figuring out what sleep stage you’re at. Not to mention the sensor will likely gain more functionality in the future.

I’m also hoping the more sensitive, faster sampling gyroscope and accelerometer used for Car Crash Detection also aid in more accurate workout detection. Probably won’t know till the in-depth reviews come out.

Still pretty disappointing they didn’t carry over the brighter outdoor display, more precise GPS or Bluetooth 5.3 from the Ultra to the Series 8.

That’s the MR way. Every time Apple releases a new product a whole bunch of people will say that it’s not an upgrade.

Series 7 actually was a decent upgrade looking back. Besides the ~20% larger display:

The brightness when the display isn’t “active” increased significantly, charging times were improved, stainless/titanium models got more durable covers, it gained dust resistance, and a swipe keyboard (which was arbitrarily limited to the Series 7)

If Apple would have added the temperature sensor and car crash detection last year as well, people would of considered it a major upgrade on par with the Series 4.

Thanks so much for this thread. Ordered my first Apple Watch just now and saved me some dough!

I did essentially the same thing, but got the Apple refurbished 45mm AW7 Graphite SS for $549. Basically the same watch as the AW8 Graphite SS which is $250 more at $799. Don’t really like that Abyss Blue sport band, but didn’t matter to me, as I’ll just use the Graphite Milanese loop I’ve been using with my AW5 Aluminum for the last 3 years.

My AW5 is my daily wearer, and the battery life had gone down to 77%. I think once I get the AW7, I’ll get the $79 battery repair, which essentially gives me a ”new” refurbished watch, and either sell it, or give it as a gift to a family member.

I’m kinda happy that the AW8 wasn’t that big of an upgrade, which made the decision easier. The Ultra was intriguing, but at the end of the day, a bit too big / too “loud” for me to wear to work every day as my daily watch.

After ordering a 14 PM 512 and AirPods Pro 2 I guess I'm in the Apple mood. Hadn't done any research since I bought my AW S5 years ago, just found an S7 45mm Midnight aluminum GPS for $330 on Walmart.com - hopefully next year the tech in the Ultra comes to a less "sporty" watch - which is awesome in its own right, just not for me.

Indeed, it was not a big upgrade. 1 mm larger display, fast charging, dust resistance, brighter AOD indoors. I think that's it. Not much at all.

S5 to S6 wasn't much, either. 20% faster, blood ox, altimeter.

And yet... both of those upgrades now look much better in retrospect after this year. Don't think I've ever seen a smaller upgrade from one gen to the next of any Apple product than AW S7 to S8.

Wonderful, glad to hear it! I actually ordered the exact same watch and got it today. Not sure I'm keeping it, though. Feels barely any different from my trusty S6 (and I actually am not loving the weight of the steel compared to the aluminum during exercise).

Exactly, ovulation is just an application that they highlight that uses that data. She also mentions exercise, jetlag, alcohol and illness as causes. I would be surprised if they won’t use that data for other applications such as sleep monitoring and exercise recovery.
I’m upgrading my S4 to the S8 (and am male).

Going from the S4 to the S8 will be a significant upgrade.

Noticed the Apple store only has the S7 in gold and graphite for stainless, but not silver. How often do they adjust their stock?

I'm upgrading from my Series 4 but I'm waiting for others to get the S8 and see how much of a difference there is between the S7 and S8.

So far I have only found the S7 45mm at £379 which would save me £60 over the S8.
