My S2 has about 15-18 hours battery, you would think after 6 years they would at least improve the battery to go over at least 24 hr. Maybe just trying to push ppl to get the ultra which has 3 days battery

I am kind of disappointed in the Apple Watch and ever year I think "this update was so minor that next year must be huge" and perhaps next year WILL be huge...but I think I'm finally upgrade my launch-day Series 4. A YOY upgrade hasn't been worth it since the always on display, but the improvements really build if you wait. Compared to the Series 4 the Series 8 has:

  • 20% larger display
  • 20% faster SoC
  • Always on display
  • Blood oxygen sensor
  • Fast charging
  • "3rd generation" heart monitor and the sensors.
  • 32GB of storage (vs 16GB)

Yeah, I agree. It’s been a slow burn. I was going to not upgrade and just hang onto my SE but since work will pay for it and I don’t have any other burning hardware purchases required I’ll grab a Nike S8.

Also has car crash detection and compass backtrack.

AW7 will also have compass backtrack once updated with Watch OS 9:)

The s7 has all that too though.

the question is, if there is next year an apple watch pro with the design (without crown guards) of the Ultra. So the 7 would make more sense.

Lol. You think Apple has any interest in being price competitive on watch trade ins? How naïve are you?

Rhetorical question, you’ve already shown the answer.

Not everyone thinks to check other wholesalers or sell privately. What's obvious to you isn't obvious to everyone.

Perhaps you might focus on offering helpful comments to the forum such as directing folks to places like Swappa or MacMeAnOffer.

We’ve derailed this thread enough. You’ll probably need to get in that last zinger though, so have at it.

No its all good. No need for us to argue like children. I took your first comment to me as somewhat condescending and I took us down a rabbit hole. I apologize and no hard feelings. Hope you have a great weekend!

I went with the Ultra. Besides the larger and brighter screen, it has better battery life than my S7.

S8 Ultra:
Standard mode - Up to 36 hours
Low power mode - Up to 60 hours

S7:
Standard mode - Up to 18 hours
Low power mode - Up to 36 hours
In normal mode you still have to charge it every second day but at least it is one day extra.
I dont consider powersaving mode to many restrictions being placed on the watch to make it smart anymore more or less a emergency ration of your battery.

I am in the same boat. 4 year old AW4 still going strong.
I could not find any information IF the Heart rate monitor sensor have been improved over the last few years.

My take on the list: Perhaps there are some more changes not sure.

I did not include the temp sensor as it is mainly for woman only, so not benefit me.
But given the 8 only has the temp sensor for woman, the list below mostly applies for the 7 which to me as a male is a 3 year development cycle since my AW4. Pretty nice but still far from sufficient to upgrade my AW4 unless it breaks.
  • 20% larger display
  • 20% faster SoC
  • Always on display
  • Blood oxygen sensor
  • Fast charging

Same, I am on AW5 and not sure if I should upgrade. My battery currently sucks. I am debating just getting the batteries replaced or upgrade to 8. I don't see any benefit for getting AW8.

Thats a tough one, replacing the battery is 150 dollar or so? perhaps a second hand AW6/7 for the price of a battery replacement? might be cheaper.

But then again wearing this device everyday for several years does give some personal affection to the device at least with my AW4 i have this, been through a lot together :D

Hehe battery replacement would cost me less than ~100 bucks here. I have considered second hand S7 but makes me wonder if it’s a second hand it may suffer from battery life as well. So, that is what is holding me. On the other hand S7 new disappeared here after S8 announcement. I am trying to reason myself for S8 but I cannot see how it will be worth my money. Whatever I track S5 does that. Temp sensor may have been an additional advantage but as of now it is targeted towards women and not detecting fever.

I guess the wise decision is to wait one more year and get S9. New device is always tempting but my rational thinking is pretty clear that S8 has no benefit over S5.

Cost for Apple to perform battery replacement in the US is $79, and I believe something like £85 to €99 in the UK and EU.

I think 4/5 year with a smartwatch is not a bad thing, given the historical track record of the upgrades so far they are pretty insignificant to me and not warranting spending 500 bucks on a new one yet.

I will do another year with my AW4 and perhaps next year i will exchange it, still plenty of people on S0,S1,S2 and a boatload on S3 still not upgrading.

So far it has been a great ride with my AW4 for a shy 100 bucks/400 usd total

My bad! that`s not to bad of a pricing.

Much bigger and thicker watch to give longer battery life yes, bigger screen, No not really. I think its been calculated at 1.3% larger than the S7/S8 screen for a considerably large face.

Absolutely get the attraction for some for the Ultra, but a bigger screen, nope.

My thoughts exactly about their intentions. 🙄

I understand of course someone might reply ”there’s only so much that is possible given the laws of physics.“ but also can’t help feeling that, over 6 years, there should be more forward battery progress than this.
To see the sudden jump of battery life to 36 hours for the Ultra model, but compared to the S7/S8 body and simplicity and look, the Ultra is not appealing to me. (That lack of appeal could easily change someday after reading reviews of it in 3, 6, 12 months, but that’s my current impression…)

So I just got the 7 instead of the 8. Same like my 6 and 4 lol. Screen is huge. Looking forward when I'm hiking with Workoutdoors. Later I will check out fast charging.

Went from 45 to 100 in less than 1h. Hopefully battery is good tomorrow so I can cancel the 8.

I suspect - and this speculation - is that Apple just isn't interested in making long battery life a particular selling point for their mainstream Apple Watch product. Instead, their focus seems to be on adding new sensors, bigger/brighter displays, more capabilities, etc. -- adding as much as they can without reducing below an "all-day" battery life.

Personally, when I go to bed my watch goes on the nightstand charger. When I wake up in the morning it's good to go for the rest of the day. I suppose that wouldn't work so well though if I was regularly sleeping in various other beds for some reason. :D

How come Apple doesnt allow you to select product for comparison?
I want to compare 7 to 8 but there is no option to change these comparisons to see side by seide
Because they’re nearly identical. Same chip now for 3 years and they’re charging 700 for stainless and only 100 more for the ultra. So either the ultra is an amazing deal or everything else is obnoxiously overpriced

If you own a Series 7, then Series 8 is a complete joke. Same watch.

I have never been as let down on a watch upgrade as this year. Apple was clearly aiming to sell the ULTRA.
Exactly why else would the ultra be only 50 bucks more than the large stainless model
