Did anyone see the new LG watch? With WebOS? It looks amazing!

It looks OK, but it's a fundamental mistake to go for a round screen on a smart watch. There's less screen area available for a given quantity of wrist real-estate.

A circular screen will also make apps more difficult to develop, and - generally speaking - more difficult to use.

I think LG has the best traditional looking smartwatch. It's the LG Watch Urbane. I could easily wear this without feeling geeky. Although it only works with Android, to me, it's the best looking bridge between watch and smartwatch. They even have an LTE version that works independent of the phone (Korea only for now)

weren't we all just recently laughing at skeuomorphism???

I am almost positive I read somewhere that the watch is ambidextrous and can simply be flipped around to accommodate left handed people. Keep in mind, the bands can be removed and placed on different sides of the watch. And it wouldn't be difficult to flip the image on the watch in the software's settings so that the crown could be on whichever side you prefer. I'm almost certain someone from Apple has addressed this.

That's right.

Apple Watch Will Allow Left-Handed Users to Choose Interface Orientation.

The more pictures of the watch I see, the more I am thinking it is not for me. I am left handed, but this watch seems to be only for the right handed people. I could not put on something that big on my left wrist and still be able to write comfortably. If I put it on my right wrist the crown will by on the wrong side and make using it difficult.

You can flip it upside down and put it on your right wrist. That puts the crown on the left, where you need it to be. The display graphics would be upside down, but there's a setting for that, of course.

The crown will be below the button rather than above it like it is on the right. But I can't see a disadvantage to that. In fact, it seems better that way to if you are working with both the button and crown. Your left thumb would stay perched on the crown while your index finger would either be on the crown or come up to push the button. I think us lefties got the best of it for once... Or so I imagine. I'd have to see how this works out in real life.

Apple can slap that watch on as many beautiful models as they want but its still mostly a superfluous device. I absolutely hated wearing a watch prior to cellphones/smartphones and I'm not going back now. The hair on my wrist will not be pulled out, I won't sweat under a watchband, nor view the pale strip of skin when I take a shower again.

no it isnt. look at the last picture you can see that the leather band just straps way better around the wrist on the IWC than on the LG watch.
You mean like this? Same type of drop.

Or forget that d*mn watch everywhere since you _have_ to take it off as soon as you sit down as all the sweating underneath makes you itch or scream in agony when those hair gets puled out...

I really hope this power reserve feature can be used anytime and not just when the battery is low.

The design of the watch is hideous at best. Does not look good at all, that is why Apple is investing so much in campaigns... to convence you.

It looks like a 60's 70's old lady stuff. An ugly retro.

You're right. Apple never precedes or follows up any of their new product launches with marketing.

When you come out against an Apple product so strongly, you just look silly. In fact, I can guarantee that, based on your comments, you will the first in line to but an Apple Watch because either you're not real or you're being lying (to yourself).

If I can see the time and track my calories burnt without an iPhone, I might actually consider getting an Apple Watch.

I'm glad the Apple Watch isn't trying to look like a cheap, large, Macy's jewelry counter watch like LG, Hanwei, Moto, etc., appear to be going for.

Dude looks dope! I like his style. I can't wait to get an Apple Watch.

weren't we all just recently laughing at skeuomorphism???

No we weren't. There were some who laughed at skeuomorphism after Apple declared it no longer cool. I wasn't one of those people. Skeuomorphism has always had it's place. As for the watch, skeuomorphism doesn't apply here. Skeuomorphism is the design concept of making items represented resemble their real world counterparts. In this case the watch and smartwatch are real world items. If anything, the opposite is true. The :apple:watch skeuomorphically represents real world watch faces with a digital interpretation.

weren't we all just recently laughing at skeuomorphism???

Many were laughing at skeuomorphism as it appeared in iOS. We needed it at first but the iPhone is 8 years old now so skeuomorphism isn't necessary for those devices anymore.

However, Apple Watch is a brand new product for new customer base. Many Apple Watch have never worn any watch in their lives but many have so you have to create a UI bridge between traditional time pieces, iOS and the Apple Watch so users quickly learn.

There will be no digital crown on any wearable devices including Apple Watch in about 3-5 years time because by then we would have brought over all the older holdout watch wearing generations by then or we will never win them over.

These Android OEM watches are the epitome of skeuomorphism. The press shots look great but IRL they often look like someone was given the brief to design a high end looking watch on a tight budget.

Only thing I'll wear on my wrist since getting an iphone would be a good watch, ie Rolex or similar.

It really only takes a second to grab my phone and see everything I need to see.

I currently own every category of Apple product, from iphone & ipod & iPad, to macmini. macbook pro. to full Mac Pros.

And yes, I was excited by the ipod, and the iphone. But not excited by this clunky thing.

The Apple computers (I, II series)
Lisa
Mac
Peripherals
Software (including OS)
Portable versions of Mac
Professional versions of Mac
-----
The above are a coherent line of a computer company.
-----
Then, a couple of forays into PDAs (Newton) and a camera, and a retreat from app software (Claris dropped, FileMaker spun off)

Still, coherent line for a computer company.
------
Then, Apple goes from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc., as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad now meant that Apple was now more than a Computer company in the tradional sense. It became a digital device company, and for a while, all the devices really needed a computer home base to be useful, so these had all been computer accessories to one degree or another. Still coherent.
-------
Then, iCloud and other iOS updates made the base computer less central, the Apple Watch and talk of an Apple car are starting to make me wonder if Apple is a computer company AT ALL anymore. The watch wouldn't be a problem except that the fashion part of it is starting to overshadow EVERYthing else. If this watch is REALLY so life changing, why are fashionistas expected to be able to really assist the consumer as to its use, outside of band selection in the "pop-up" stores? A CAR throws so much more into the mix (and I don't care if it is electric, cold fusion, and can be made with a StyleWriter 3D), we are getting VERY far afield now. What kind of company is Apple now?
--------
I never identified with the "cool factor" of Apple. I saw some great products, occasional breakthrough software, and often the best option in a PC world. I bought, recommended, administered these devices for other reasons than style. I don't see a coherent identity for Apple any more. I am hopeful that either they buy Tesla but keep it separate from Apple and make the watch business a subsidiary, or just spin off the Macintosh and become a lifestyle company.

Sorry but the above comes off sounding like a bitter old man. Companies change with the times or the die. (General Electric is a good example. It diversified to remain relevant and is the only original Dow company left in the index. The other original companies either no longer exist, are part of other companies, or minor.) Apple did almost "die" in 2000. But luckily pivoted with the iPod and convinced music labels to help launch the iTunes Music Store and the company is still with us.

It's been quite some time since Apple Computer existed. Steve Jobs explained why he asked the board to change the company name to just Apple, Inc. It's a consumer electronics company -- been that way. It's identity seems very clear with consumers as its been Fortune Magazines "Most Admired Brand" for several years. Companies don't get that if consumers are confused by what the company does or stands for.

Apple is an electronic gadget company. Maybe in a few years a car company too. Macs are part of product lineup, but not the lineup anymore. Just a fact of life in 2015 that desktops are not relevant as they were 10-15 years ago.

I'm not certain about this, but I think the fact that it's a smart watch will allow you to flip it over on the other wrist, thereby putting the crown on the correct side of the watch to use it.

So... these pictures establish that if you are hipster douchebag, you'll look even more like a hipster douchebag wearing this watch. Is that what Apple was going for?

A bored, self-obsessed 20-something hipster is supposed to get me to buy an Apple Watch? Ugh. Got to hand it to Apple, though ... I guess they know their market.

You beat me by a fraction of a second, it seems! I'm in complete agreement.

Apple is really advertising the heck out of this thing. I don't think they've ever marketed a product this heavily before. It's going to make people want one just because even without knowing exactly what it can do.

You quickly forget about the yearly marketing of the iPods. They were marketed to death - literally. Look at the iPod classic (RIP)

I can't be on the only one to think the picture with the magnifying glass is distinctly odd.

Soon everyone will be wearing goofy hats and carrying magnifying glasses while wearing their Apple watch. It will be the cool thing to do.

Or maybe you'll need a magnifying glass to see what's on the watch screen?

If you get a metal band that stretches, the holes inside the metal band will pull your arm hair. That's why I've used leather bands for the past 20 years - no such problem.

I bet we'll hear from a lot of people in the next few months who buy the wrong band. The material in the band DOES matter - it's not just looks.

Leather - doesn't pinch at hair, sweats more in hot weather
Metal w/openings - pinches at hair, colder initially when putting it on
Plastic/Rubber - seems to sweat the most.

There are probably all sorts of other issues if I think about it longer.
