I still want to know if I can go for a run without my phone and the watch track my steps. I know the watch needs the phone for the most part but I do not want to have my phone and the watch when I run or bike. I have not seen any solid information that supports this either way.

Why would anyone buy one of these if they have an iPhone ? lol

The only reason I can think of is for the health apps. It might be possible for someone with diabetes or another chronic condition to write off the cost of a Watch, with the main reason for buying being able to better monitor and manage their health.

You are not the luxury market Apple is targeting with that price. This watch is for watch collectors and Apple enthusiasts buying Audemars Piguet, Tag Heuer, Bvlgari Diagono, etc. You are not the target demo.

The "1K" comment is referring to the Apple Watch (not Sport or Edition). That's not the line that's going for the luxury market. Regular Joes ought to be able to afford a stainless steel watch (and we can, as long as it's not made by Apple).

I think @$500 for the stainless steel version would have been acceptable. I wouldn't pay $349 for a tacky looking plastic version.

I just can't believe these prices. I have in the past spent more than $1000 on a watch, and I still have them, they work brilliantly, and are still valuable.

In a year or two, iOS in this watch probably won't even be update-able, and the battery will probably be shot.

I was excited about the release of this watch, but not any more. Not at that price. I'd rather spend $4k on an Omega Speedmaster.

Now in a digital era the mechanical watches will go down in value...ONLY collectionares will pay a high price

Fun fact: It looks like the Milanese Loop is only available in 38mm sizing. That is unfortunate, as it's reasonably priced at $149.

Pretty sure it comes with the 42 for $699. Wouldn't make a lot of sense if they only offered the 38 size Milanese Loop as an accessory.

A very large chunk of the price on the :apple:Watch model is in the bracelet. As long as the bracelet is going to be compatible with any future version of the watch then I can justify the price. I hope at these prices this isn't something Apple plans on updating every year. I'd be much more comfortable with these prices knowing my watch is going to be the top-of-the-line, at least from Apple, for several years to come.
And forgive me if someone else has already asked/answered this, but are the bracelets interchangeable with the other models of watch? So could I use the link bracelet with the :apple:Watch Sport?

Yep

All the prices are now up and running on the Apple site.

According to the UK the stainless steel with the link bracelet will cost £819...not sure I can drop that on a SS when the Sport starts at £299...essentially they are charging £520 for the strap....REALLY

You're shocked? Really? C'mon.

The original iPod was $499. It was pronounced overpriced. People seemed to love it at that price and similar prices, and it did wonderful things for Apple.

You can't really compare the iPad with the Apple Watch. The iPad didn't need another device to be tethered for much of its usability. They are also two different devices with completely different use cases. Further an iPad can be shared.

The cost of entry for the Sport version is right in the Apple wheelhouse. And remember, the Sport version is not handicapped in any way in its performance. I would imagine Apple will sell 10 Sports for every 1 SS, especially since the potential for future releases making the old models somewhat obsolete is always there.

The band only section seems to be missing a lot of size combinations.

With this announcement I am convinced Apple is more interested in selling products to the 1% than anything else. This audience will buy a $17k watch - that will be useless 3-5 years from now - and not even think about it.
I could see spending $17k on a Rolex that will be fully functional 100 years from now, but a product that relies on an OS? Apple is high.

Tim talked about that $17k watch for like 10 seconds during this announcement... are you high?

One Watch and Macbook gold for me :)
I was very skeptical to the whole watch and battery life. But cook said the 1 day battery life with such a positive tone that it turned my skepticism into praise. ....well, buying one anyway, just to test it out.

Huh?

Seems a lot of people have no idea how much a high-end designer watch costs.

Watch Prices

People will drop $1k on a pair of diamond earrings without a second thought--why not a watch? These prices seem in line with the mid-range watch market. $17k for the top-of-the-line watch is in the same range as high end watches. Go on any site and check out plenty in the $10k-20k price range. Of course those might be still worth that much (or more) 20 years from now!

I must Want to Suffer

Installing 8.2 now cause I don't need it for the watch I won't buy.

Milanese Loop in Steel it is! They really know how to market these. I was thinking I would go with base steel and get the band later but at $100 I don't see even ebay getting it down in price until a year or so since it is $149. Oh well. That magnet had better be very strong!

Nope, too much. Keeping my Pebble Time kickstarter order and waiting another year or so for the Apple Watch.

For me it's the fact it's great tech that will be outdated in couple of years. If they had some kind of service to swap the insides out with the new version I'd jump on board, and more reason for me to just buy a nice, dumb watch.

could not have said it better myself.

Ok, so I wasn't really planning on buying an Apple Watch. I knew the model I wanted most would probably be over $700, and it's $1048. I was planning on waiting to get version two or three. However I refuse to spend that much on a watch—even in the future.

I might just get a first-gen Apple Watch Sport in black and force myself to be happy. I'm not a fancy guy, but I usually wear decent stainless steel watches in the $200-350 range. I've got some thinking to do. It will probably help to see it in person. My main concern is that I will scratch the crap out of it—the glass and aluminum. My current watch has quite a few scratches, which isn't a big deal because they are less noticeable on a normal watch face. But on a tiny display that I use all day? That would drive me crazy. I'm pretty torn. I think I might wait and see what other users experience. I'm also not sure if I need a smart watch yet.
