He would have never gone for that. It's simply not something you can improve on.
I don't even think of my watch as a watch. It's not a watch at all.

Point taken, but then naming it iWatch was probably a little too conventional. I would have gone with 'Analog Metric' or the iAM maybe since what it is measuring is not time so much as it is measuring us.

EDIT: Big Ben was a reference to clock technologies shrinking down to wristwatch (a la computer on your wrist) - I wasn't remarking on the aesthetics of a clock face.

It's not named iWatch but I get the point.

There's an Apple Pay on the watch for McDonald's. They should ask Jony to appear in one of the commercials since the watch is helping him.. never mind..

Certainly not me. I have to carry around a work phone all the time and I usually have my personal phone along. I don't miss wearing a watch one bit.

It feels like companies are trying to create a market where there really isn't one. Fitness trackers are one thing, but a watch just isn't a good device for consuming media. The controls and screen size don't allow for useful interaction. No amount of battery life, thinness, or roundness is going to change that. I've only ever seen one smartwatch in the wild, and it was a Samsung Gear. Everyone else in our IT department feels the same way...
The watch isn't intended for media consumption. It's intended for short interactions with pertinent information. What's the time, check time. What's the temperature, check weather complication. Who just sent me a message, check notification. Etc.

Make it waterproof and iPhone-free.

Problem solved.

Yep!! That's what it'll take and Apple will finally be able to count me as an Apple Watch owner as long as the battery life lasts 24 hour minimum. For now, I'm still on the sidelines despite having every other Apple product line since 1986. I'm perfectly happy with a traditional watch since I have to continue carrying my iPhone anyway to use the present Apple Watch.

Is $10 too much? That's what I paid for good knockoff sport bands on Amazon. Bought several.
I meant Apple bands. $50 for a silicon band is stupid expensive. Cmon?! I don't care what quality it is it will never be worth $50 to me. That's insane. I think $35 is too expensive but still if be willing to pay that much. But $50?! No way!!!!

AW is a flop. Sorry guys, it is what it is. Doesn't move the needle. Not a drop in the bucket for Apple. No one was saying that about the iPhone after its first year. NO ONE. How long before apple pulls the plug on this?

I think it should have both shapes as many watchmakers make both square and round. The curved edges with the bent glass would look awesome. It would look more like a bevel edge. It's a reason that some will not buy, better to offer more options to more people.

Making it another option ok

Needs new faces, and/or support for third party faces.
Apple has totally dropped the ball on this. People. Want. Custom. Faces. Not only would it make the watch more popular, it could be another source of revenue for developers and Apple. App Store>Watch Faces. Duh?

Apple hasn't really Wowed anyone since Steve Jobs passing. It's obvious now that something is missing. Apple is slow to update Macs and when they do, it's barely incremental. Even their star product, the iPhone is now suffering declining sales for lack of innovation. And it seems it will continue to suffer as the iPhone 7 looks to be a minor update and not the radical redesign usually reserved for the non S models. Cook is a numbers man. Not an innovator like Steve. And now the numbers are declining. Apple needs a true visionary at its helm again.
Macs are dependent on Intel CPU schedule which is in limbo for the last couple years. If Apple controlled all components in their computers they'd do a yearly release like their iPhones.
The global market is having a huge affect on the upgrade cycle and the ability to sell iPhones at the 40% margins. Apple commands 90% of smartphone industry PROFIT. That means everyone else is fighting for 10% of the pie.
I don't know what else Apple can do right now besides lower prices or make new product categories.

You see it as a lack of innovation, but it's more economics beyond Apple's control.

Right. But this is a first Gen Watch. Give it time and it will achieve more capabilities and options. Comparison to first Gen iPad and first Gen iPhone. Huge differences in Gen 2. Patience is a virtue. Let's see what Watch 2 will
Offer.

By your definition, watches are a flop, to which I would agree. Even so, Apple sold more than half the smart watches in the world that quarter. Yes, it's a drop in the bucket, but selling 2 million of anything.

Also, people were saying iPhones were a flop the first year. Just because you weren't paying attention then doesn't make it so. 1st gen iPhone sales were about that level too.

haha, these figures are always so funny. Only post them when they are in some soort of way positive for brand X. Look, brand X is awesome!!

Don't post them when its negative for brand X. Nobody knows / cares / continue life.

I'm honestly shocked that ANYONE is buying the Apple Watch. It's super nerdy-looking. And, from what I've read in the comment threads here at MR, not particularly useful.

Thanks for your educated, unbiased, insightful, all to well
Written post on why the Apple Watch is not useful. I feel much more enlightened and confident on why I should not purchase an Ape Watch.

Competition is catching up and like most things, the competitors offer similar products for less. That will certainly drive some customers away from Apple.

Maybe. But Apple's ecosystem is what Apple fanatics love. And the Apple Watch does suffice to complete in the realm of things.

I'm wearing it while under the shower after my workout in the gym all the time and never had a problem with it.
But I would never swim with it, because you can't use it with water on the display anyway, so why?

I wouldn't wear it while swimming anyways. To risky and not risking on ruining my $600.00 Watch. Not until it's completely waterproof.

Really?

Let's take a quick look back at the first year of the iPhone. Apple sold 6 million iPhones from a year ago this weekend up until around the middle of May, Starting with iPhone Day on June 29, 2007, iPhone sales have followed a bit of a bell curve pattern, peaking at 2.35 million shipments in the fourth calendar quarter of 2007 before retreating this year..

Here’s a smattering of those thoughts from 2007:

  • “Despite some important missing features, a slow data network, and call quality that doesn’t always deliver, the Apple iPhone sets a new benchmark for an integrated cell phone and MP3 player,” Cnet
  • “Here’s the verdict I’d give any good friend: Wait to buy the iPhone, Gizmodo
  • “There are a lot of things to love about the iPhone and a lot of things to hate,” Arts Technica

I like the Apple Watch a lot, but I agree with your assessment of Tim's leadership. One of the things Steve Jobs did fairly consistently (although it always seemed to surprise) was to make even the low-end products delight in their particular ways. Thus, there was plenty of magic to the iMac (and the iBooks, etc.) even though those on paper were lesser computers than some of the higher-end offerings. And on several occasions, he surprised by making certain products much more affordable than what people expected. The best example of that was probably the first-gen iPad, which nearly everyone had projected to be >$1000 and which ultimately started at about half that price. I feel like Tim would have seen the buzz surrounding that rumored product and sought to extract as much money for it as he could. Steve, on the other hand, wanted to get them into people's hands and avoid the perception that it was only a high-end device. The company that gave us "the computer for the rest of us" doesn't seem to be a part of Tim's Apple.

In addition to your Post, Steve was a salesman, and an efficient one at that. Tim is an engineer. Their philosophies of styles are vastly different. Hence, changes in leadership.

This post makes perfect sense because:
  1. You're obviously a fashion authority, and
  2. Comment threads at MR are representative of everyone

Apple can't risk giving up on AW. Instead they're going to pump even more money into marketing to save face and stimulate interest. Fortunately Apples got wads of cash with more where that came from. Apple Watch will live on, Apple's money will fix it.

Tell me then, how long before Apple pulls the plug on the Watch? I agree it has its short falls, as does every other first Gen product on the market. Elon Musk (Tesla) stated the Apple Watch is not
Their yet, but it will be by Version 3 or so. I'm not fan of Musk, but what he is stating is products evolve and conform to the consumers needs and wishes over time. Give it time! It's not perfect, but it does have potential. Your post slightly egregious.
