Au contraire. Even though I dislike digital watches and will not buy the Apple one, I think they are doing EXACTLY the right thing to ensure its success. Watches have always been jewelry first, utility devices second ( unlike phones, computers, mp3 devices, etc..).

In fact this is exactly what Steve Jobs would have done. Someone posted this video on another thread (Steve Jobs on fashion) :

http://youtu.be/iYwoPuN9kQQ

What is the catch phrase on "Project Runway"? 'One day you're in, the next day YOU'RE OUT!' Me thinks of this when viewing the photos.

Anna Wintour seems to be grabbing at anything and everything to keep Vogue relevant. Kim Kardashian on her cover. People scoffed and dropped their subscription. This? There's a change in the water and I don't know if it is good or bad.

Clearly we're living in a different age now but that picture of Ive with Anna Wintour (Editor of Vogue) & Karl Lagerfeld (Creative Director for Chanel) shows exactly how this trinket is being marketed.

Not impressed.

However, if it is to win over young, affluent people, Apple need to climb into bed with these fashion individuals (who have incredible influence on persuading their readers what is 'cool').

I think it makes sense. After all, most 20-somethings don't wear watches anymore. It's not as if Samsung has had much success despite releasing 6 designs in the past year. To succeed they need to go a different route.

Wow! long line just to see the watches. Impressive.
Even without Steve Jobs Apple's showing they are forward thinking, U2 free album disaster aside. I never buy gen 1 Apple product but I might buy this. If it can help me improve my health just a little bit it'll be worth its price for sure.

Bravo to Apple for marketing this product correctly. A watch, ANY watch, is fashion first, and utility second. Its a great way to set themselves apart from the other smart watches.

I can just see fashion retail giants like Saks 5th Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman etc asking Apple to use the Apple Watch product in window displays. As a visual merchandiser, I know i would.

I've seen a photo of his father. Ive definitely got his genes and they're not the skinny ones.

So what you're saying is that he's spent so much time on making the iPhone thinner that he hasn't had time to make himself thinner?

Very true. And this is the correct route i think.

I see quite a few people wondering why sunglasses are being worn in the photo indoors. If you have ever been at one of these type of celebrity events with tons of photographers with huge overpowered flash cameras snapping every couple of seconds I think you would understand why celebrities wear sunglasses indoors.

Nah, it's not built on fashion. It's built on technology. It's wrapped in "fashion", because that's what sells. It's what many outside of geekdom respond to.

Samsung built a smart watch that completely ignored this aspect of product design and look how that worked out. This isn't so much the technologists selling out to the fashionistas, as the two sides figuring out how to grow and promote their ideas together.

You could say that. But I dont agree:

The the "wrap" is build on fashion and fashion dont sell in the long term, and I believe that Apples DNA is long term design.

The "inside" is also build on fashion, you could say, since the functionality of this watch is such a gimmick. It can do nothing better than your Iphone, and you need to carry your Iphone with the watch. And take a look a the presentation (keynote) of the Iwatch - look at the functions presented there! And the presenters are not even wearing the watches - the way it is intended (on the arm) - when they show the functions...a funny signal...

Its such a gimmick - in my world.

I look at Ive again in his rumpled weirdo suit with squashed collar, and I'm left thinking that the guy doesn't really have the sense of taste I used to assume he did.

Also he looks like he's either high or hasn't slept in days.

"positioning the Apple Watch as a brand new product"

Uh, it is a new product.

MacRumors is so anti-Apple it isn't even funny.

It's because over half the forum is read by Apple Haters - it's their way to get page hits and money.

If it can help me improve my health just a little bit it'll be worth its price for sure.

Haha! How can a hefty overpriced Bluetooth gadget improve your health? Are you really such a marketing victim? :p

Don't be an :apple: sheep, monitoring isn't going to help. You must act! Besides, your brain tells you usually more than a bulky watch. If you really intend to improve your health condition, you better park your gas-blazing SUV and sign up for a fitness club membership.

:apple: is clearly moving out of computer nerd territory with this watch (end I guess the nerds don't like it :) )

I'm a computer nerd, and I love the Apple watch. And yes, computer nerds love non-computer things more than computers.

Now, measurbators, people of the benchmarks, Ghz, GB's, etc... I think they'll hate the Apple Watch.

Wow. All the razor-sharp bitchiness directed at poor-old Jony's appearance. I'm not sure if I'm in MacRumors or "VogueRumors".

It's like auditions for "The Devil Wears Prada 2" in here. You're all hired! :D

It has built-in apps that designed to ease you into exercise. Yes, I must act and I hope it's precisely what make it fun to act.
Your post is so full of bitterness but thanks for trying. Trolls are just a dime a dozen these days. Worthless specie.

So what you're saying is that he's spent so much time on making the iPhone thinner that he hasn't had time to make himself thinner?

No I'm saying I'm not surprised he has weight issues. Most likely a genetic issue.

Yikes! And sunglasses indoors? Seriously? Is she trying to be a caricature of herself? It's just so ... impractical.

Ah, the indoor sunglasses sign! Let's just say that it's a pretty good indicator of a high-maintenance individual, to put it tactfully (anecdotal evidence I've observed as a psychologist).

Kind of ironic considering some seem to hate Apple's move towards fashion. ;)

You're supposing young people are going to be able to afford a minimum-300$ toy?

He said "young, affluent people."

I also don't see how there is much of a difference in price between most people paying $200 for an on-contract iPhone and then paying $100 a month for service, yet not being able to afford a $350 :apple: watch. Most of those people should be able to afford an :apple: watch, if they want one.

I don't think price will be the big issue with the :apple: watch, it will be how functional it is and if that functionality can overcome the desire not to strap something on your wrist. It's gorgeous but at this point I haven't seen any reason I would want one. I love not wearing a watch. Apple (or any company) has to convince me to give up that freedom to wear a watch-like device. In the long run a device like that probably needs to completely replace a smart phone, yet I can't see how that makes for a better end user experience for most functions.

Is Jony Ive wearing a pajama top for a shirt? :)

He is desperately trying to get a side-job a Vogue cover model ;)

Oh, I can see it already: Karl Lagerfeld designs a new fashion line for obese industrial designers, exclusive pictures are soon to be revealed in a Vogue issue, pending Ms. Vintour's approval. :D

My best hope is that the :apple: Watch will be like the first iPhone, with enough promise that it will quickly develop new features and a smaller form so more people find them useful. I'll definitely sit out this first generation.
