I don't like any of the TV boxes that connect to the internet because my ISP is flaky and it's not that fast. I'll just keep on using Cable TV, I have faster channel switching.

I think internet based TV is a joke. I watch movies and TV shows on Crackle and Amazon Prime and the content stops intermittently due to a crappy ISP connection. We all can't get 20MB internet connection to have 1080p.........

For movies, I still prefer something like BluRay since it has much better audio quality....

The fact that your internet connection is cr@p doesn't mean that internet-based TV is a "joke."

I've cut cable years ago and never miss it. The PQ quality on Netflix is close enough to BR on a 65". The audio is good also - lossless audio is good marketing, but I have not seen a double-blind test where people can tell the difference between lossless and high bitrate audio (320k) reliably, so even if you hear a difference it has nothing to do with the compression, but with the studio remix.

Cable is dead, as far as I am concerned.

Actually, about 40 to 50% of society doesn't drink. Some cultures don't allow it. How do I know? I've seen the statistics. Kids under 21 represent a fairly large amount of the population and most of them don't drink....

The health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption are well established.

The US is a bit of an exception, with the ridiculous 21 age limit. The Bible Belt is closer to Saudi Arabia and ISIS than you realize or wish to admit....

You went from 0-Troll pretty quick.

You mean with the outright ban on smoking in public spaces, in force since 2008?

I really do hope Apple has figured out the battery life on the iWatch. A single day will not cut it, as even Samsung is just coming out with multi-day batteries.

Samsung has invented a new battery type? Sort of doubt that... Not sure how charging it every 2 day is better than one day BTW?

Making it sure that if you use it heavily it will not die by days end, yes that's important. You could say that corresponds to two day use, but most people will recharge it every day regardless because they don't want to have to worry about their battery running out on the second day.

$5k is within the realm of possibility for me. I would not go higher. It's not a done deal by any stretch (depends on my bonus this year, plus whether or not I think the Edition will still be useful in a few years).

Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, etc. would also be good places to sell the regular Watch, particularly if there are versions that are around $1,000. Lots of Rado, Movado, and Tissot watches are in the $800-$1200 range.

I doubt they'll make a $5000 watch. They'd want to move a substantial amount and $5000, while it will sell, will limit its market A LOT.

The Mid range one will be about $550 (that's my estimate), the top range one should be $1000-$1500 (not saying that this will be the price), so people with money but not awash in it, would actually feel like upgrading would be worth it (they can give their watch to family or resell it, I'm sure the resale market will be very good for something so well built).

...

If this means that it will not function as a sleep monitor then for a lot of people it will be of a lot less value.

All I said is that the first generation of wearables from the likes of Samsung and LG were a flop, to a large extent because of the limited battery life. The Gear 2 claims 3 days....

If iWatch lasts for a single day, it will mean that it is behind the current competition and it is useless as a sleep monitor, which makes it a very expensive pedometer.

You went from 0-Troll pretty quick.

Why, because I pointed out that well established research shows long-term health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption and this somehow offended your religious sensibilities?

Mantra of the press: The People Have A Right To Know!! (no matter how many we injure in the process)

To be fair, it's the guy's own fault for posting something like that in public where anyone could find it. Mantra for dealing with the internet: once it's out, it's out forever.

I don't even want to think about charging it every day. The minimum acceptable for a watch is a 1 year charge.

And I don't want to wear the same thing every day, so it seems pointless.

And I'm not going to buy an iPhone.

A YEAR? For a smartwatch? Come on now, I have a feeling you know as well as I do that that's just not feasible with today's technology. But then again, your other two sentences seem to sum up rather neatly that you're not the market segment that Apple is marketing this to.

Its not behind of the competition if it actually has lot more functionality and the reason it would last a day would be because you used those functiality. Cell phones can also last a week on stand buy and so what?

Considering Apple has the latest in both SOC, cell and screen tech in their watch and a tight integration with software they've adapted themselves (unlike Samsung, LG, etc), it is doubtful they'd get less performance out o their watch.

Saying it last 3 days is useless unless you know what the hell the thing is doing all that time.

I'm sure that if you disable bluetooth and the screen, that watch can last 7 days, no question about it and just record your heart rate and steps for that whole time. Bravo, you got a very expensive health band. Might as well have bought that instead.

Actual functionality and the ability to last one day under intense use of these is the key. With light use, maybe it lasts 3 days, but that's pointless.

I'm pretty sure the gold one would be a very acceptable one for such a gift. You seem to have a weird view of how much into tech the modern young women is. I'm not myself that young, but I'Ve got plenty of those around me. In fact, got the feeling, young women could be the biggest users.

OK, maybe where you live, not where I live and the women around me who are all upper middle class and not into tech at all. Fancy shoes, yes. "Cute" purses, whatever that means, yes, so I've been told, but tech items -- eyes glaze over and not a nookie inducing gift at all. For them diamonds -- and diamond watches -- are still a girl's best friend.

And it's not about women being big iWatch users, I'm sure they will be. It's about what kind of gifts they expect from their boyfriends and husbands on the most romantic day of the year according to Hallmark and the Rose Growers Assoc. A digital watch, even with an Apple logo and high price, doesn't cut it.

Glasses, cig, T-shirt, beer, metal watch...

This could be very well be a photo of my dad from the late 70s!. He's never been a very stylish guy.

:D

Around me it is engineers, doctors, lawyers, upper middle class to well rich professionals and their children and they'll lap this up.

Hallmark card buyers are not really the same people who are into high end hip fashion, at least I don't see them as the same people myself.

BTW, I hate roses myself, there are plenty of other "better" flowers around :).

I like it. Never mind the silly watch. This is free humanity as we should all know it. Free and unintimidated by some local California law enforcement psychopath handcuffing people for smoking or drinking in a public place. Learn from this little picture how happy people can be when unregulated by the bored butterfaces and such. Too bad they cropped the scantly dressed 17 year old Polish girl out of this shot.

Yeah, I flipped a coin to decide which side to rant about this time. :D

I'm guessing that dude in the pic sucking on a full flavor Marlboro won't be using the fitness apps.

I agree with the 1st and 3rd sentences here. But that middle one...I guess the USA just has more idiot 16-20 year olds. I'd be in favor of raising the alcohol age to 25, rather than dropping it.

What are you guys? Twelve and in bible study? Let the man enjoy his beer and cigarette.

Well as a 35 year old atheist I can say, dying a painful slow death, gasping for breath, while your family go through terrible suffering, trying to come to terms with the fact you are about to die... isn't my idea of enjoyment.

Smoking is one of the most stupid and selfish things a person can do.

It doesn't just make you look like an idiot, it confirms it.

Dude, all I am saying is that one day battery life is not enough for the watch to be fully functional as a health tracker, which is what Apple seems to be pushing. If it doesn't track what you do at night, it will not be as good as most health trackers currently on the market.

I certainly hope it will last longer than a day and if it does, I will buy one to replace may Basis.

Also, Samsung is now using Tizen OS for its Gear, presumably for tighter integration: http://www.downloadtizenapps.com/2014/06/samsung-to-unveil-gear-3-along-with-note-4.html

I am not a fan of Samsung phones (I've had three so far) and not interested in the Gear 2, and we know about as much of the Gear 3 as we do of iWatch. All all I am saying is that there is competition out there and Apple needs to be at least as good, if they are to be successful. One day battery life is just not going to cut it - this is not a phone, but a wearable device.

Instagram account now private

Someone at Apple PR might have had an issue with this guys pictures. At least his Instagram account is now private ...

Not to hijack the topic, but in the US you can get a gun at 16, but you can't have a beer until you are 21.... Just nuts and largely religion fueled law. In Saudi Arabia you can't drink at all, so I guess the US is closer to that mindset than to the French one.

If anyone is interested, that photo is taken in the outside area of the cafe Deux Magots, Blvd St Germain, Paris 5e. The church is on the right out of view, the cafe is on the left out of view, the view faces north....
Thanks for identifying the the location! I went right by the Saint-Germain-des-Prés stop on Metro line 4 on the way to where I was staying when I visited Paris in August. I'll have to go there next time around. Of note the Postal Code for Les Deux Magots is 75006, putting in the 6e arrondissement.
