I bought a silicone bumper for my SS S0 for mountain biking, but stopped using it fairly quickly. Also had S3 and S4 Alu and now S5 SS. The S3 had an odd mark on the edge of the glass from rubbing an aluminium framed door at the office, otherwise nothing. I‘ve never had AC+ on a Watch.

I don’t use any protection on my 11 Pro Max, nor 16” MBP, but I do have AC+ on those. 12.9” iPad Pro is the only device with a case.

Cases on a watch look ridiculous, imo

Yeah, but, I don’t think the watch owners care about aesthetics when it comes to practicality in terms of actually protecting the watch. We’re talking about a smart watch acting as a ‘wrist computer’, not a high-end mechanical watch like an Omega or Patek.

Just ordered our third Apple watch - one for the hubby to monitor his heart. It will also have a caseology. Mine fell off our 3 foot counter onto a tile floor. I took it off to take a shower and an alarm went off so it buzzed itself off the counter. No problems with a case to hold the edges of the thin film face cover.

It's still a really good looking watch. Plus, plenty of people must care or they wouldn't spend extra on stainless steel, titanium, ect.

Mine is holding up surprising well since I seem to bash it into all manner of objects - lampposts, bus grab rails etc. I’ve worn it every day without a case for five years. No damage to the screen but scratches on the case.

My SBTi has held up well. I tend to abuse watches and don’t use a case. The Titanium SB case is still perfect, but somehow I managed to scratch the sapphire screen pretty good. You can feel it with your fingernail.

I actually thought about carrying an Apple Watch around in my pocket without a strap as a way to get out of carrying an iPhone around -- a way to be reachable and have basic access to calendars and stuff without the distraction of a big fat iPhone screen.

But, from what I've heard the battery life just isn't quite there yet.

I’ve read very few cases of scratching the sapphire display, but it certainly is possible as you mentioned. I’m curious to what your display came into contact with that would’ve caused the scratch where you can literally feel it with your finger nail you mentioned. I’ve been fortunate, as I hit mine on the grill, walls, doors, you name it and it’s been flawless on the sapphire display. But then again, your post is definitely an example it’s not impervious to damage.

I would imagine battery life world be quite different given the fact that it wouldn't try to use any of the sensors to measure step count, heart rate etc.

I’m not sure. But I think it was a roof shingle. I got cleaning out the gutters in a couple spots and I bet i raked it against the edge of a shingle. Those granules are sand like.

Naked. I might definitely be weird but I love how stainless steel gets after some time. Yes, it gets scratched and all but it almost makes it feel that much durable. I understand how people would like to protect something they spent money on but I dunno, I enjoy it. I felt more worried about the aluminum one, honestly. The SS is just much more durable and beautiful, in my opinion. Same thing with iPhone, sure, be careful, maybe slap a minimal case on the phone, but just enjoy it. These things lose value anyway, don't trash it but, go on living your life, you know?

I'll put a case on my $400 Apple Watch right after I put one on my $9,000 Rolex and my $2,500 Tag.

I gather your sarcasm, but nobody would ever put a case on a Rolex or Tag Heuer, simply because those watches are aesthetically meant to be ‘shown-off’ for the hardware. Plus, The construction of those watches has substantial weight given the thickness of the steel are using, which why would you need a case on an expensive watch in the first place given the durability. I know I’m stating things that are obvious, but your comparison isn’t even appropriate given an Apple Watch doesn’t have nearly the level of ‘toughness’ that a high-end mechanical would include.

And sarcasm it was. But, I'm sure Apple designed their watch to be shown off also, not to be hidden behind an ugly case. I have shattered a sapphire crystal on a Tag, but not (so far) on an Apple.

From all reports it seems like the SS SB is almost impossible to damage/scratch

I have the sport series 5 with no case. I think they do more harm than good because they get dirt and sand in them and scratch it up

If you’re using the Apple Watch with no case, then how does ‘dirt and sand‘ get in them. (As you worded it). What you’re likely experiencing, is your physically hard on the Apple Watch where You damaged it with things you’ve come in contact with. I think the aluminum is fairly durable, but everybody’s experience will vary.

I’m saying a case does more harm than having no case. I think dirt and sand gets under a case and scratches it

The same thing happens with phones when people don’t take off their cases and clean them and their phones.

No, it does Not. You’re merely assuming this without experience. There’s members on this very forum who use a ‘bumper case’ on the first GEN aluminum watch, [With documented pictures with no accrued damage.] It just takes a little bit of attention to remove the case every so often to thoroughly wash and dry it. It’s totally dependent if someone actually takes time to think about it and makes a one minute cleaning maneuver.
