The only reason why I would buy the $4000 watch is that 20 years later it will be a vintage worth 10 times the value.

Like that first generation Macintosh computer sold for 1 Million? ;)

Gold watch is only expensive for the poor.

What do you do with an obsolete $5,000 watch? Sell it for scrap?

Those underlined words are mere speculations.

I dunno, i fail to make sense of those 4k-5k quotes, all Apple devices for the most part have 1 year warranty, sure you can add AppleCare which mind you on iPhones unlike on macs adds just 1 more year to the warranty but more importantly ALL Apple devices become "vintage" or obsolete at their 5 year mark at which point it is no longer serviced by Apple in any way whatsoever this including batteries.. unlike watches people tend to replace their iOS devices on an average of 1-3 years max and go for the next best BUT with watches people don't, people hold on to them for many many years... Apple Watch is basically a smart and glorified digital watch and without a sanctioned service or support option at the 5 year mark it will become a chunk of gold with a black dead useless screen... and a little reminder... batteries on average have a 1k cycle life after which it degrades... charging Apple Watch everyday and maybe multiple times a day due to usage, i see the battery requiring replacement on a more frequent schedule than on other devices... again what happens after 5 years...?? good question..

IF the pricing being quoted is in any way accurate I hope Apple offers either an upgrade program for full devices or their internal package OR extends their "vintage/obsolete" window to at least 10 years.

It's timeless only because the people in the watch community decide that it be timeless, and the Rolex watch maintains its value insofar that there are people willing to pay for it.

....

Actually a good Swiss watch is timeless because they work flawless even many years after you bought them. And if not you can have them serviced...

$500 for the stainless steel seems reasonable. I've been thinking lately that I'll skip out on the first gen, but who knows. I always love owning the first gen and keeping it forever. But I'm kind of a crazy watch wearer. I wear mine to bed, I wear it in the shower (I rinse it off before getting out). It's ridiculous. I just know I'm going to wear this thing in the shower and ruin it. I think it's only water resistant. Charging it every night is also a bummer. I have way too many things in my life that I need to charge. The iPhone, iPad, and rMBP were all instant buys for me. This thing? I'm going to wait and see. Either way stainless steel is the way to go.

Is nobody else not seeing what I'm seeing? The sapphire bottom of the :apple:WATCH looks made to come off to easily replace the battery, possibly upgrade the CPU and add new sensors.

Apple must know that the renewal cycle of these watches can't be the same as an iPhone or even a Mac. If you're buying a gold watch, it's got to be good for at least 5 years or maybe much longer. If you can upgrade the fitness sensors and maybe the CPU, Apple can continue to make money annually or bi-annually from :apple:WATCH owners.

THis is a joke right??

You can't replace RAM and Battery in Apple computer, phone and music device, but you can do it to Apple watch? ;)

Holy crap, well looks like Pebble Steel will be suffice for now.

I think this is the first time Apple has delved into fashion obscurity. This gold watch is only popular to people with enough money to throw it away after 5 years when Apple stops supporting it. I have a 100 year old pocket watch that is beautiful and keeps time and is worth way more than an Apple watch--because it's still relevant. Jony Ive's research into the merger of technology and hundreds of years of timekeeping is fail--well unless you're only interested in money, which Apple says they are not.

The watch is a necessity that has survived for hundreds of years. Did your first iMac survive?

I think the iWatch is a revelation to people that don't know the value of a watch. One that is passed down from generations. How many people continue to use the first iPhone?

Not the first time. There was the 20th anniversary Macintosh that cost $7500 in 1996. It was Jony Ive's first big project at Apple. And it was a huge financial failure.

I believe most people will not buy one at all.

i won't buy it, but i know it will sell like hotcakes. people like novel experiences. and people trust apple to deliver premium products.

i still like the ipad 4 and iphone 3gs....even the old polycarb macbooks

No thanks, Ill stick to my Tissot - T-Race - Sapphire Crystal, Carbon Fibre, Glass and Swiss Made - prefer mechanical over electronics - more precise. Cost me $1000

My guess is it will be Apple upgradeable. It looks very modular.

I find it hilarious that people on here think Rolex is the only luxury brand out there.

Solid Gold Apple Watch

Yep. They'll just buy another in a couple years though. At $4k, they can afford it. Plus, there will be some value left in it because of the gold if they choose to sell it.

In case I missed something I seriously doubt the Apple Watch will be solid gold so it might end up be surprisingly affordable. Besides if it's solid it would likely be uncomfortably heavy.

"may" and "could." This is not information.

Anyway... if Apple doesn't have a buyback program, someone else will.

And there will be plenty of 3rd-party bands too.

(Didn't someone calculate that the gold alone would cost over $10,000?)

Gold is $1100 an ounce right now. I doubt the watch will weigh 9oz of gold plus band plus internals plus crystal.

it must be... or else the pricing makes no sense. But I would wait for 2.0, as they will learn so much from 1.0

The first generation Apple watch will be serious collector items where it will sell at 10x a few years later. Consider it an investment. I'm getting that super bling $4K Apple watch, never open the box and have it pay for my daughter's wedding in a few years.

Upgradable?

I like this idea very much. However, due to corporate greed I seriously doubt Apple would go to the trouble to make a product more affordable or extend its useful life. They haven't banked billions by enabling consumer efficiency.

Tough decision.
350 maybe, 500 no. But frankly, do I REALLY want a gizmo on my wrist that tells me I'm lazy, bothers me with text messages and (gasp) tells the time? I have 10 Apple devices right now so, yes, I am one of those "fanbois" the cretins are always chattering about, but still...

Not sure I TOTALLY agree with that. My older Macs still work fine, it was my decision to buy the latest and greatest... but I sill gave you a thumbs up.

It won't because hundreds of other people will be doing the same. Expect to have Rick offer you 50 bucks for it on Pawn Stars 2025.
