Shower waterproof?

Who takes showers with their current watch on? I sure don't.

Actually a lot of athletes who have sport watches (e.g. Garmin 620) do after hard workouts, and if the Apple watch is going to compete with those in the fitness arena it will have to imo.

The typical failure point is not after a single submersion, but after repeated submersions over time.

In denial because the AppleWatch passed a pretty uncommon water test? Most people are more concerned of being out in a rain storm and feeling uncomfortable about wearing the watch. This water test video showed that water splashing is non-issue.

BTW, it wasn't a "single submersion". The guy in the video put the AppleWatch under water multiple times and did 2 pool tests with the second test being under water for extended period of time.

Not sure if I would test the watch under water ... but I gave one to my little one and he played with it and was fairly rough with it ... it survived!

(He liked his pirate watch better ... as the apple watch did not have a pirate watch face ... :)

Good thing you didn't give it to him with the Mickey Mouse face; maybe you wouldn't have received it back.

While you aren't wrong, you're getting pretty involved with this discussion for somebody who just wants people to stop being impressed by something.

Reminds me of a certain line by the Dude in the Big Lebowski.

You're exactly right. I categorically don't want ANYONE to be impressed by these test. Absolutely no one. You know why? Because they don't surpass the IPX7 rating Apple already has for the watch. Apple never set a lower expectation for the watch, so the OP is disingenuous at best. Worst of all, it encourages behavior that will degrade the water resistance. People should be excited about the watch. But not because of some imagined under promise/over delivery. Someone using these "test" as an indication of an okay use case is setting themselves up for disappointment.

Or would you rather I just grab some pom poms and wave my hands in the air?

"This is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's". - The Dude :D

May I ask how would you know "a lot" of athletes take showers with their sport watches on?

Why? Your slimy as hell and first thing you do is not wash under your band!! Yuck. How many is a lot, 1%, 5%, 20% (a lot here is basically a weasel word) it means NOTHING.

Considering Garmin's watches were IPX7 for a long time, I get the feeling those athletes were NOT talking showers with their watches back then.

I was that kind of athlete for a decade in the 1980s to early 1990s and let me tell you I didn't keep my watch on in the shower...

People spending money on this watch should have a decent amount of common sense. There are two many horrible things on the internet attempting to influence people. If we all played "Follow the Leader" most people would be dead by now.
If people are going to blatantly dunk their AppleWatch just because of this video then it's their own stupidity and they have no one else to blame.

I don't consider a watch to be quality unless it's rated for at least 50 meters. This whole expectation of being able to "shower" with it makes me laugh. I expect the lowest of quality watches to be able to "survive" a shower.

My watch is certified watertight to 300 meters. I can't imagine personally going under water deeper than that.

I bet you have entire civilizations of bacteria living under that Rolex.

Jeez, you sleep wearing that thing? I take mine off every night, wearing it to sleep is like sleeping with shoes on.

I honestly don't even notice the watch when I'm wearing it. I've worn it for so long that it feels strange when I'm not wearing it. It's a smaller Rolex (not one of the massive Submariners or Yacht-Masters) and it's very comfortable on my wrist.

I posted a pic in the Apple Watch forum.

I haven't had as much as a cold in several years, so whatever bacteria are under there must be cozy enough to stay out of my blood stream.

IPX7: Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).

So Apple Watch survived in conditions it said where Apple said would survive? They act so surprised by it.

How is this a story? Seems the water resistance is exactly as stated? Also, they have no way to know if water entered during the test unless they take it apart. They will need to wait and see if condensation forms or other issues appear later.

Impressed and pleased to see it perform this way.

Let's hope there is not enough variance to make some better than others, and they are all as good as this one on test.

Let's be honest, there are going to be people who, somehow, drop it in the sink, drop it in the pool etc etc.

It's good to see it is able to withstand this.

The TEST of course will be how deep will it go.

5m, 10m. It will of course fail at a certain pressure, but for a everyday watch for a normal person, this is looking very good so far :)

What happened, looked like you didn't like the watch?

Still seems odd, but mine is probably heavier.

I can like and dislike various aspects of something.

eg: iPad2, I liked as an upgrade to iPad1, but iPad 2 had a joke of a 1 megapixel camera on the back, even worse than a childs toy so was disgusted by Apple fitting such an embarrassing part to the device.

Yep, I'd say yours is heavier. I think I got in the habit of not taking mine off when I started traveling for work on regular basis. I just like knowing that the watch is on my wrist and not sitting out in the open somewhere. Nice looking watch, btw.

Having worn a Pebble for over a year, into the shower, I was afraid that I might forget I have the Apple Watch on when I step into the show. At least now I know if it happens and I noticed it, I can quickly take it off and place it to the side with no worries.

I have the same concerns and am frankly, disappointed that the watch isn't waterproof. I am an early adopter and will be getting my watch today. I would love to be able to wear my watch while running in the rain (I live in Portland, OR) and also in the shower. It's not that I want to use the watch in the shower, but I like to keep my watch on all day. Seems like this is a step backwards and while I also understand that this is a gen 1 device, it seems to me like it should have been waterproof even as a gen 1 device.

This confirms my belief that most smartwatches these days can handle more than what its advertised. IP67 on most watches can actually withstand a swim but not diving. Most people are just too conservative to swim with their $200+ devices but I bet that those devices would still work after light swims or showers.
