Yeah, 1 million pre-ordered on FIRST day...
50% will be returned because everyone ordered 2 different sizes just to try...
Another 25% will be returned because they realize the Watch sucks...
100,000 are just developers buying watches
10,000 are just media/reporters buying watches
90% of the remainder are just sheep buying because they have to - because they're loyal to Apple. They'll be in their sock drawers within a week
Maybe there will be 100 people that buy it for real and really use it.
Android Wear has 700,000 loyal customers who love their watches and it changed their lives.

So, Android is winning 7000 to 1.

This is the Android spin we'll see in the coming days....

So why bait them? seems some die hard apple fans are happy to actually initiate the pointless flame wars .

That was the first thing that came into my head. What is the incentive that would make a million people give away access to their email receipts.

Astounding.

I'm pretty sure it's more like, they're in some kind of email shopping service (that somehow makes it easier to do it all, or some kind of loyalty scheme or whatever), and they say ok to the Slice people scanning the receipts for what they buy through that service. Not the whole inbox. That makes a bit more sense.

I tried one on, just because I was stuck in a mall with an Apple Store yesterday. Came away decidedly unimpressed by the demo (they don't actually let you use it at all while it's on your wrist. Lame.)

I have to agree that the store demonstrations aren't great. I wanted a working model on my wrist.

They also had no coloured bands except white and black, and when I went they only had 38mm in most of them.

I'm not in the least bit mad... I'm just laughing at the absurdity of Apple Haters and the extremes they go to to trash success outside the Android World

Problem is, some people need to look in the mirror at times. Let me take your reply and change 2 words so you understand how the other side feels?

"I'm not in the least bit mad... I'm just laughing at the absurdity of Android Haters and the extremes they go to to trash success outside the Apple World"

And as for this thread, you are actually baiting them, but taking the high ground. Haters are haters, both camps have them, both just as bad as each other. Wait till you get your unit, enjoy it, but don't feed the haters.

We shall see...

I just believe it's way too early to determine if Apple Watch is a big hit or miss.
It's a cool new toy in a world where smart phones are getting boring.
I still think the big sale is to win converts to a new hardware platform.
I still don't think I want to basically strap a beeper to my wrist. As more useful apps proliferate I might be sold on the convenience factor.
Since it's much less essential that an iPhone I think a lot of people will pass on it due to price.

big numbers

A million in a day is incredible. I'd imagine Apple will be putting out their usual "first weekend" order totals shortly.

I'm guessing 2 million in the first weekend (weekend actually being from when they went live on Friday until the end of Sunday on the US west coast).

That's only the US. Add a few million more for the other countries. At more than $500 average per, and a gross margin of perhaps 50%, that's a lot of dough.

After the initial rush, even if Apple sold only 100k per day that's 9M per quarter, times $500 is $4.5B in sales and $2.25B in profit. That's a big boost to the bottom line. Last quarter's profit was a monster $18B, so that would be *well* over 10% added to the bottom line of even that crazy quarter. That's ridiculously huge.

And if they sell 200K per day...

iPad sold 1 million in one month, iPad 2 sold 2.4 million in one month. You really believe that Apple's customer base grew 2.4 fold in one year? No.

First gen products sell less.

Not to mention you cannot compare this to a phone. Not everyone wears a watch, but arguably everyone has a phone.

I'm just saying you cannot compare launch day numbers in 2015 against the original iPhone and iPad. I said its relative.

Also depending on the year, yeah I would believe apples customer grew by 2.4, especially when talking about the launch of the iPhone or iPad.

i went into the store because my wife wanted to buy the watch. i figured i would go in and at least try to steer her towards a cheaper one. we walked out with two watches. the link and the pink bands. the playing with the software was available but not so much during the tryon period. that was mostly about seeing which size and band you wanted. at least they helped us with the ordering. I had thought we would go home and order there (by which time I may have talked myself out of ordering one). So ultimately I think the experience was better than I had expected. Certainly it was for Apple that got two sales out of us.

By these numbers 66% of the styles preordered were not eligible for the Milanese band. That says that the remaining 34% were of the eligible style for the Milanese band. The sport model and the black stainless were the ineligible models ( if my memory is correct). That would indicate that almost all the stainless steel ordered the same band.

What do you mean, ineligible?

You can put the Milanese band on the sport.

But it still means that this is a fairly error-susceptible statistic.
Can they really extrapolate this population of users who have allowed their shopping to be scanned, to the entire population of the US?
Because by saying that there were 1 million pre-orders, that is what they are doing.
I would be more impressed if they quoted appropriate error bars with that estimation.

therefore, in the meantime, we have absolutely no idea what the number of pre-orders was. And any articles like this are as much speculation as plucking a figure out of the air.

Pretty solid but it will never silence the haters. They'll figure some way to spin it. You know who you are.

It's not a case of hating anything. The fact remains the target audience for this product no longer wear watches.

One wonders how many will be lying in a drawer gathering dust in twelve months time.

I still wear a watch but then I'm not the target audience. If it had three year battery life between each charge then I might be interested, otherwise NO.

That is roughly the time frame where the iPhone install base tripled. (Beginning of 2010 to mid 2011)

Of course you cannot compare 7 years ago to today, but Apple's customer base did not grow 2.4 fold in one year. People just waited to buy the iPad. I bought the 3rd gen for the first time myself.

These can be picked from ebay for $50 after some while.

This i perfect example of a product that lot's of people will buy but most will not use it after test period. Great for second-hand market.

too soon to say anything. There's always a lot of people that buy anything on day one which comes from apple. The real indicator will be in the next few months

Thing about watches is that they get given as gifts, whereas giving a phone is often impossible because of the contract and carrier constraints.

It's an expensive gift for sure - if ever they bring the price down to $99 (old version?) I think we'll see huge numbers for these things. Conferences will start putting them in gift bags.

You mean iOS install base. That's not the same thing even if it's true. Not every iOS user is an iPad user obviously.

Wait until Xmas and buy these off eBay, as gifts for relatives you don't like....

I guess you are in luck !!!

I for one want apple to succeed. I just don't think this watch thing is what they need at this point. Especially with those price point.

a million in a day is incredible. Especially when you consider this is not a stand alone device.

I tried one on at the weekend and thought it was great, I have pre-ordered. Didn't see it as an essential purchase as the iPhone/iPad was, so happy to wait until June.

I much preferred the look of the aluminium and space grey to the stainless steel. The stainless steel looked old fashioned and didn't compliment the product, that said I do like the milanese loop band.

what about resellers

I bought 1 for myself too. But learning from my past experience, i can easily say atleast 30% of pre orders are from resellers. Remember the day iPad 3 came out? so much sales on day 1 and so much returns in next couple of days. Not sure if this will be the same story but we will see.

If it's sold 1,000,000 on opening weekend it's done better than the original Mac, the iMac G3, the original iPod, and the original iPhone.

If it exceeds 1,000,000 it has outsold the iPhone 3G's opening weekend, too.

Also, it's left every other smart watch in the dust.

Of course, people will argue that because of Steve's legacy, the Apple faithful has grown so large these numbers are expected. #
