I doubt it even covers the money they spent on advertising for the watch.

This is not even the first year! It's called "marginal cost of production". If you spend say 3bn designing and marketing the product and in year 1 you take in 1.5bn then in year 2 you double that, it starts to become really profitable. It's rare that any product like this anywhere will make it's costs and marketing budget back in the first year.

You're reading that article very, very wrong.

Did you read ? Let me quote it : "Nearly two-thirds of Apple Watch owners and exactly half of Apple Watch Sport owners placed the device in a drawer, indicating that they may give it another shot at some point."

Plus " Only 18 percent of those Apple Watch owners and 24 percent of Apple Watch Sport owners sold the device, while a smaller proportion returned their devices to Apple. "

So how many owners are left wearing the watches?

I bought the SS Model upon its release.

An interesting product, I tried to like it but after a few weeks it lost its luster, didn't do anything to earn its place on my wrist so I returned it.

In fairness I have a large selection of gorgeous handmade luxury Swiss Chronographs. By comparison Apple looks cheap, plain, and just too annoying.

I don't need notifications, I'm organized and not too lazy to take my iPhone out of my pocket to see its highly useful 5.5" display.

:D

If you don't need notifications or thought it was ugly, why get it in the first place? Sorry, but I read comments like that and find it hard to believe that you even owned an Apple Watch.

Your post may have been genuine, but you'd be surprised how many posters come here pretending to be Apple users only to put Apple down at every turn, with a few praises sprinkled in to disguise their true intentions... Kind of like their own anti-Apple propaganda campaign.

It's bizarre how much hate/envy people must have for a company to spend their valuable time on such nonsense, but amazingly enough, they do.

so many stupid people just like me. if the re-sell value wasnt so bad i would have sold it months ago. i know ... 1st gen product, i learnt my lesson

Funny, that. I think Apple Watch made all analogue watches look very, very old, overnight. And to say the SS Apple Watch looks "cheap" is just stupid. You may say it looks "plain" or "simple", if you must. But on the other hand, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, you know. That's the difference, to me, in a nutshell. Your "chronographs" are poseurs; despite their complicated exterior screaming "look at me", they only have very few, very simple functions. The Apple Watch is understated, it looks like the simplest object, but does so much more. And up close, the materials and finish are very beautiful, making the whole object, in a (ivesian) word, essential.
Oh my, apparently I've posted an opinion that's far too honest and personal.
Having hurt your feelings, I apologize.

Thats wrong.

Those figures are only about the 3% of Watch owners who were not satisfied. The other 97% are still using the Watch every day.

Seems like the "Apple Watch Defenders" are having a tough day.

Why so sensitive?

Look at this, 2/3 of apple watch owner and half of sport watch owner just put them away.

http://www.cnet.com/news/why-some-apple-watch-owners-dont-like-the-device/

You obviously fell victim to the click bait that this article is, and didn't actually read it. Its 2/3 of those DISSATISFIED owners ... not 2/3 of all owners. The same research firm has published findings that say the vast majority... 97%, are SATISFIED. http://fortune.com/2015/09/08/apple-watch-satisfaction-survey/

Why do they compare the Apple Watch with fitness trackers? These are completely different products.
They would have to compare smart watches with smart watches and fitness trackers with fitness trackers.

However the sales number of the Apple Watch are better i would have expected.

In related news Glad trash bag company sold 50 million trash bags while Louis Vutton only sold 2 million units.

It is a shame as a New Category for Apple. I doubt the 1.5 billion will even cover the cost.

Yes, when any other manufacturer releases A BRAND NEW PRODUCT in a new CLASS, the expectation is it will recover all development costs in one quarter.

I think the fact that my very expensive chronograph broke 3 days prior to me buying the apple watch was a sign - I'm now able to track fitness things that no fitness band tracks: I have a polar bluetooth chest strap heart rate band but honestly, this is a much better setup for times when I'm NOT exercising.

Many times determining what your body is doing the times you aren't exercising provides a better idea of your general fitness.

I now track resting energy when I'm not exercising (which is related to metabolism), standing hours (at work the polite pestering by the watch for me to stand has helped me burn more calories than I would else), and active energy (which is gradually increasing as I'm more aware of sedentary processes).

Sleep Pulse 2 lets me analyze my sleep which I was going to go into a sleep study at a medical center due to potential for sleep apnea. So far I haven't had to do this but at least I can give them some graphs and charts based on how well I sleep before I ever take the study.

1st gen product... Key features missing (GPS, certain health features, has to be connected to iPhone)... Expensive product on the market... High advertising costs b/c of new product launch...

I'm waiting till 2nd gen to really judge the product. There was a ton of pressure on Apple to succeed here and for the most part, I think they did just that.

Its the fastest selling Apple product ever. Those without vision think its uninspiring. Just like those without vision bashed the iPhone and iPad when it was first released.
I don't care how fast it sells. I'm not a shareholder.
I'm an huge Apple supporter and the Apple Watch is uninspiring in my opinion. I'm entitled to have one.
Add a gps, a more mature operative system and I'm going to buy one immediately.

Agree. Won't buy one until it has GPS.
Add me to the list

My work made me get one. I don't like it but I can see more appeal than I thought.

So a device that aids in helping people lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle is not needed?

What ever dude. Go on your high horse and spout what ever you want. The Watch has helped me live a more healthy and fit life. Go ask anyone in a hospital and ask them how much your health is worth.
So basically, you paid $100 more for an Watch instead of a Fitbit... to do the same thing? Nice way to prove the point of the poster you quoted o_O

After bashing it for a while , I actually went out and bought one . Hated it for the first week , now I don't take it off ever. And I have a watch collection I adore

I don't buy this at all. How could you bash something you didn't even try? Oh wait, here on this forum, bashing is the name of the game. What could have possibly motivated you to buy the watch and then hate it for the first week. Surely you hated it from day one with the bashing and then hated it when you bought it. And then you loved it?? Please, this is the fishiest story I've ever heart.

The one thing you basher lose is almost all credibility. You bash, you hate, you condemn almost everything, simply because this forum allows that. There is almost no reasons for the hatred given. There is almost no intelligent discussion here.

And now you expect me to believe your story? Never. To use that overused and nonsensical expression that is now sweeping over the internet, I say "meh". Frankly, "meh" reminds me of the sound that a sheep makes. Hey wait, now I get it and understand why so many use it.

I received the sport version Apple Watch as an unexpected gift. I like it more than I thought I'd have liked one, and I anticipate my appreciation of it growing more.

But that said, it still seems way overpriced in terms of satisfying an actual need/void for such a device.

I have the better SS watch and think it was priced very fairly. I'm surprised a basher/hater would wear an overpriced apple product. Isn't that being hypocritical?

I'll buy an Apple Watch when they are thinner, faster, and have better battery life. So far macbooks, iPods, iPads, and iPhones have all followed this trend, so maybe Apple Watch v2 or v3 will be more appealing. I wouldn't be surprised to see an 18-24 month upgrade cycle for the watch though. Unlike phones, which were historically subsidized on a 2-year cycle, people will want to hang onto their watches for much longer.

This is a survey ONLY of Watch owners who expressed BEFOREHAND that they were not satisfied with it. Hence this is in no way a representative survey of ALL Watch owners.
