I look forward to the day when there is no longer a smartwatch market, only the Apple Watch market. First pebble, now Fitbit, maybe the Swiss watch industry next, perhaps the smartwatch and even tablet market in the future? By the time the Apple watch’s strategic advantage becomes clear, it will be too late for companies to catch up.

Yes Tim we know you do. Think of your bonus.

I'd love some statistics with _all watches_.

Simple fact: I will absolutely not wear two watches. Therefore, as long as I wear my good old mechanical watch, which was more expensive than an Apple Series 5 watch, I'm not going to buy any smart watch. On the other hand, someone wearing an Apple Watch (or some Samsung or Fitbit watch or whatever smart watch), is not going to buy a traditional watch. They are absolutely competitors in the same market.

And as they are direct competitors, they should be compared directly.

And please a comparison with revenue. I'm sure that Apple sells more watches than Rolex. I'm sure Rolex gets more per watch on average than Apple. I'd like to know who has more revenue.

My Series 5 is one of my favorite Apple products. Even with workouts and always on display turned on, I still finish the day at 50% or more and that’s taking my watch off at 5am and placing on the charger around 8:30-9pm. Granted, I have the 44mm without cellular so I imagine the non-cellular models may get better battery life?

I have the 44mm Series 4 Cellular. I can put it on my wrist at 5AM, go through a day that usually includes a 4 mile run, music on AirPods and a few phone calls taken on the watch, and take it off at 9PM and it still has a 45% charge.

I'm curious why you feel this way. For me my phone does everything I need whilst I'm out of the house. Isn't the watch just a phone with a tiny screen, no keyboard, and few apps? What am I missing?
You're missing fitness tracking, including heart rate and calories, without bringing the phone along.

Awesome device. The couple killer apps for me... haptic notifications when to turn when driving, always available Siri, video/audio controls, and probably the most important by far of all.. Dexcom app. Allegedly Apple and Dexcom had been working hard on getting an app to work completely independent of the iPhone... it hasn't happened yet, so suspect there are likely some battery or bluetooth improvements needed first so the frequent data reads can happen... but when that next gen watch comes, I'll be very much interested.

We will now see all the copy cats come out with "cheaper!" "Better that Apple Watch" "More features!"

The worse part is their fanboys will be coming onto this forum telling us how much better their piece of crap watch is.

Love my Apple Watches, I see them everywhere. Id like there to be different designs to choose from now. That way I could wear different ones during the week depending on outfit or activity.
I didn’t get the 5 because it not only offered little new, but because it looked the same as my 4 and 3. people would buy more than one if the designs caught their eye.

I do like my watch but I’m reconsidering being so dependant on it having seen the trade in values and realising just how overpriced they are.

lots of people have seen it on my wrist and asked and I’ve extolled the virtues but they all baulk at the price.
This is a really weird comment. You really like the device but are worried about trade in values? When the watch was first released lots of people balked at the price, not so much in 2019 when they start at $200. Heck, you can get a S4 for $329 currently at Best Buy which is essentially the S5 minus AOD and compass.

It is pretty well documented what the watch does. If you don't see any utility in your life that's perfectly fine.

Many in the workforce are not allowed to pull their phones out of their pocked to check notifications, even if you were just checking the time, it’s frowned upon.
Timers and alarms are handier and easier on the watch.
Apple pay on your watch is amazing. Especially when you forgot your phone or wallet.
I check how my heart rate for the day was every night.
i check my steps and workout on it.
i use it as my ipod to listen to music at the gym.
And sometimes are hands busy.

Wearables revenue was up 54% officially (from Apple) so this is probably just an extrapolation from that.

Wearables are absolutely killing it, but these numbers are just guesses.

Average price comparisons are only allowed when comparing iPhones to Android

I don't think they really are competitors though. People wear watches for lots of different reasons. I couldn't fathom spending a lot of money on a Rolex because the only thing it does is tell time. You aren't interested in any smartwatch. I'm not interested in a very fancy/pretty "basic" watch. Different strokes for different folks.

edit: I want to clarify I am not talking down about Rolex watches or people that buy them. People just like different things and for that reason I don't believe they are competitors at all. My mom and dad recently bought Apple Watches. Neither of them have ever been in the market or thought of purchasing a Rolex.

They are entirely different products. What is the point in comparing them? Someone looking to buy a Rolex will not be in the market for a smart watch and vise versa.

Exactly. I didn't wear a watch at all for years until I bought an Apple Watch 5. Smart watches created a new market. They are not in competition with regular watches at all.

A Rolex keeps its functionality and value for decades. An Apple Watch for months.

They compete for space on your wrist, but one is an investment and the other is disposable.

Because it’s jewelry...that tells time. The Apple Watch is technology, that is constantly evolving and offering more and more functionality than just being a shinny time telling bracelet. They are not aimed at the same consumers.

The Apple Watch is not just a phone with a tiny screen, etc. It is a small device that function more than just a phone. It feels incomplete without my Apple Watch.

And one is good for giving to your kids and the other for running your life.

Yes and no. My son has a watch costing $xx,xxx. Yet he mostly wears his Apple Watch. The expensive watch being reserved for special occasions.

Brilliant.

AW fans: Apple Watch is great!

Trolls: It's no Rolex!
