You do realize you will get only get 1hr of talk time on LTE, hardly a iPhone replacement

I do realize this, and I would not be using it as a replacement. Most of my LTE usage would be non voice call. That which is would be generally short . . . like where did you put that or bring something home with you.

My series 1 would fit my needs if it would just tap me when I go out of range of my iP7 or allow me to connect to wifi networks that aren't saved. Usually im walking the dog or going into the grocery store to only realize I left the phone at home or in the car. Funny my Bluetooth headset (Bose qc30) will remind me I'm out of range.

The only thing that’ll prevent me from picking up the S3 is the carrier support in the U.K. EE (otherwise known as, if you think Apple has inflated prices you ain’t seen nothing yet) as the only one out of the gate is disappointing, not that I’m blaming Apple for that.

But by the time the rest of them get their act together it’ll probably be too close to a S4 launch to make the S3 worthwhile.

Ah well, my S0 still serves me well and with the GM it’s actually performing really well. Hopefully by the time the S4 comes that god awful red dot will have been banished :D

There’s still some areas I’d like improved on of course. Well one really, battery life. From reading around it would seem that a workout for when I go hillwalking wouldn’t stretch to four hours with LTE on anyway, so I’d still have to take my phone. Which I do anyway, camera y’know so no biggie.

It’s going to be great for shorter stints like going for a quick run or at the gym. Or with more conservative use of LTE but really, what can we expect from a teeny tiny battery.

It’s only to be expected from such a small device that use of LTE will have to be managed if you want to make use of it and make it through a day. But that shouldn’t put us off what is an amazing piece of technology.

I mean look at it for Christ’s sake, barring a camera this thing is more advanced than an iPhone 5 and it fits on our wrist. ON OUR WRIST. Am I’m I the only one still amazed by that?

Making phone calls on a watch was science fiction until not too long ago. The first iPod could hold, what, a hundred or so decent quality albums. This thing can stream over 40 million tracks. It has barometric sensors, gyroscopes and all manner of other sensors up the wazoo.

Ahem, anyway, I think they’ve done really well with the technology that’s available. What we really need is a major advancement in battery technology to enable us to take our devices to the next level. That’s what’s really holding things back.

Until then, if the U.K. carrier situation improves quickly enough, I’m throwing money at this thing.

Edit. See, this is what happens when I post before my morning coffees :p

“The watch is useless without its own data connection”

*Apple watch gets LTE*

“Why does the watch need LTE?”
And Apple, why didn't you make the carriers give me free service?

Jeez, the entitlement displayed by some forum members is just incredible. How could anyone possibly feel they deserve free monthly service from their carrier for a new device added to their plan? Is there zero value to LTE voice/data capability to your watch?

Of course, a carrier might offer free service as a promotion or enticement to switch, nothing stopping them.

As an Apple Watch owner:
the red crown on all colour combinations is a joke
one hour LTE call battery life is a joke
LTE on a watch is a joke
whoever asked for the two above is also a joke

Excellent post. Running a S0 42mm stainless steel here, use fitness tracking for lunchtime walks at work with music on the phone. All of the S3 stainless steel models include LTE. EE have already emailed me to ask if I’m interested in the S3 Watch so it all depends on how they price the Add On to support it on top of my existing tariff with them. I’m already making use of their 6 months free streaming for my existing Apple Music account which already has me tempted to either up my data allowance when I upgrade, or to see if they have an Apple Music streaming Add On.

If only Audible made a Watch app that one could sync/stream audio books to then I’d be all over S3 On day 1.

Now I'm laughing. Does that make this post a joke?

I doubt I spend 10 minutes a day using my phone just for phone calls but even if I did, what about using this when you go to the gym, out for groceries, whatever. Good for getting calls in the car too.
It'll be nice to have my phone on my wrist.

If they stopped selling this as a stand alone device rather than an iPhone accessory I could see this feature being more beneficial. Making setup and app installs all done on the watch could open a whole new market of people wanting a decent smart watch and fitness tracker but don’t have android.

It will be few years before watch is independent of phone.
Lot of improvements needed in battery life & user interface (Siri has to be lot smarter) before that can happen, but it is headed in that direction.

You never know, Amazon and Apple seem to be on better terms these days, so maybe an Audible app isn’t out of the question.

Until that day there’s always other methods of listening to Audible books on the Apple Watch. Probably something, if I had to guess, like TunesKit Audible Converter for Mac. What? Who? I never said a thing. Wasn’t me, I wouldn’t remove that pesky DRM. Wouldn’t know where to begin  ....... Slopes off into the darkness.

It's a good idea, but I'd really only be interested in gaining access to Apple Music on my watch to pair with my Air Pods. I cannot, however, add another charge to my monthly bills, so I'll stick to my Series 1 -- it does everything I need it to do. I'm glad they're keeping S1 in the lineup instead of abandoning support.

I noticed the Series 3 with cellular comes with a Ceramic back and the non cellular comes with Composite back. Does anyone know if this makes much of a difference with durability. My series 2 has a Ceramic back and I haven't had any issues.

The non-ceramic back will develop a 3-4 mm scratch spot in the middle from contact with the charger puck. Does not affect the sensors or charging.

One of the most heard complaints about Apple Watch was that it was tethered to an iPhone. Many people said that if it was tethered, they were "out."

Now it's not (or much less) tethered, and reviews imply, "not a game changer."

Is this another example of where "following the drumbeat of what customers want" isn't always something companies should really listen to?

As for me, I think it's a pretty cool upgrade. I have friends who don't own a smart phone, but they like to exercise. I would think this would be an awesome time for them to buy in.

Will the previous watch bands be compatible with the new Apple Watch?

And I am considering buying this watch if an iPhone is not required for its functionality.

Serious question, do you take your phone with you right now when you run? I couldn't imagine taking calls and trying to respond to text messages when I'm out running. This is why the series 3 doesn't do anything for me that my series 2 doesn't. My workouts are the only times when I'm wearing my watch but don't have access to my phone. People have been screaming for this feature for a while though so I'm sure there's a market for it.
Conducting telephone calls while out walking the dog is a great 2 birds 1 stone situation. not having to carry the phone will be great. It's easy enough to walk out the door and forget the phone -- but the watch is always on your wrist.

Wondering if you can disable LTE (or never activate it) and get a solid two days of battery life out of the series 3 watch.
Or disabling LTE means shutting off wifi/bluetooth as well?

This reminds me of the iPhone in 2007. And we all know how that went. I still think the user interface, and the battery have leaps to make, but I am sure they will solve it eventually and the watch will be a huge game changer. The AirPods are a perfect companion if not for the fact that they really only fit one size ear.

I do a lot of windsurfing and kiteboarding..
This lte feature can be a lifesaver in case of a equipment failure or injury when im way out there.
The present solution for some is to carry a radio or a phone in a waterproof pouch.. (not so practical )
With lte watch the problem is neatly addressed.
Add on top notification and messages ... 10 bucks a month is a deal.. no brainer for me....And im sure for those who have similare activities or find themselves in situation like i do.

Ordering friday!
