I thought about buying the Apple Watch solely for monitoring my heart rate during the gym because I have target heart rate goals when I'm working out. That's how calories are burned. I heard the sensors are great for it although for weight lifting not so much. However at $400+, my friend advised against wearing it solely for the gym.

I am still Apple Watch-less for now, and I'm hoping that Apple puts something out that competes against the $150-200 segments. Very doubtful given their target demographic, but one can hope.

pre-owned 1 yr fits your price target.

I preordered mine through my cellular provider and got it at launch day, although I wasn't able to pick it up until yesterday because I was out of town all weekend. Then I was pleasantly surprised the model my wife wanted was available yesterday at the local Apple store rather than waiting until the expected late October ship date. Nice 10 year anniversary gifts for us.

I do wonder if Apple thinks the demand will be sustained after Christmas? Not sure if November will be a bit late to produce watches for Christmas season.

I ordered mine from Verizon on Monday, Sept 24th. It said it would arrive by the 26th. Now it is showing an estimated ship date of November 14th! I ordered the 44mm Stainless Steel with Milanese Loop. Are they slipping that far behind on orders? I figured I was safe ordering a more expensive model.

There is no technical reason as to why the Apple watch could not work with other OSs
Just being able to get the watch to play nice with all the different versions of Android would be a huge technical undertaking. Troubleshooting would be a nightmare.
Even the Samsung Gear smartwatches require a Galaxy phone. Apple wouldn't be brave (or dumb) enough to claim something along the lines of "now works with Android!" :)

The watch needs to be autonomous. LTE makes that possible. The sooner Apple can ween the watch off the phone the better. Then, any device with BT pairing could be used to set it up on any platform, through a simple web browser interface, requiring all users to establish an AppleID and account. Third party data can then be synchronized via the cloud with any app on any platform as well.

I was chatting to someone at work last week who thought the same, they didn't want the iPhone but needed it for the watch.

The Apple watch would sell like hotcakes if it could be paired with android.

Apple the company that likes to think it is saving the world, will let users use other OSs only when it suits them.
It would be great for a device that detects falls and afib could be sold to the masses without the need for an iPhone
Saving the world is just a marketing, Apple is more concern of making more money than it already have thus keeping the watch within the ecosystem is the best decision for them. I'm not too concerned about this if you're an Android user no worries it's gonna come out soon. The technological breakthrough of those feature means it's already available it's just a matter of putting them together with Android Gear or Samsung Gear. Besides if you want to reach the product to the masses Apple Watch is not affordable for everyone. It's a nice wishful thinking but it's not gonna happen and even if it does not everybody has a extra $400.

Now there's a thought. It's only a matter of time before this happens. All it needs is a breakthrough in battery tech, since currently LTE-only mode doesn't quite meet the "all day battery" claim.

They will separate the watch from the iPhone some day. Just like they eventually separated the iPod (iPhone) from the Mac.

I highly doubt it. Apple only gives a glass of ice water to people in hell when they are absolutely forced to.

They are the incumbents now and don’t need to do that. There are so many more iPhones out there now then Macs back in the day.

Also the App Store completely changes things as well. People thinking Apple will license their systems or open them these days are misguided.

You will find that most people who already use health and fitness wearables (like the Apple Watch) are also healthy. They don't use it because they are unhealthy. Monitoring your health is not a bad thing. Some people may discover things about their health that if they did not use the Apple Watch, wouldn't have... or it would have been too late. I don't think monitoring your health does make you paranoid. It's better knowing then not knowing.
Actually, I have heart issues. I was using a Fossil Q Founder, but it doesn’t have health sensors. When I found out I have heart issues, I got the Apple Watch. Now with the S4, and the update to come, there will be even more ways to track my heart.

The supply constraints are kinda pissin me off i had to order the watch a week after launch and over that time the delivery date slipped from oct 15 to oct 19 thats quite the late delivery date in fact they havent even charged my card even tho i ordered it on sept 21. i think im going to die of hype

So my boyfriend had this issue too and he had order via JUMP plan on T-Mobile. A TM rep told him that the reason why it took so long was the type of band he ordered on the watch. So he cancelled the order and re-ordered the AW using a white band (must not be that popular) and he got the AW with expedited shipping 2 days later. So I would ask about that because maybe its the type of band you chose that holding back the order. Some of the watch bands are back-ordered right now.

I hate my (black) Milanese loop band, wore it for like an hour at home day 1. Now I'll have to either sell the band or trade the whole watch.. but there's no supply. Really don't want to mess with either, but it's $100.

This is great to see.

Boy would they sell a ton more if they pulled an iPod and offered it on Android (which really doesn't have a good watch CPU), course that would require Apple Pay, iMessage etc. to be ported as well (a big job....but lay the foundation to lift a huge group of people over to Apple eventually).
The Apple Watch is what almost pulls me to Apple. The iPhone doesnt and as a gamer a Mac sure doesn't but the AW is a game changer

Taiwanese manufacturer Compal Electronics will begin mass production of Apple Watch Series 4 models in November, according to industry sources cited by supply chain-focused publication DigiTimes.

Compal will share orders with fellow Taiwanese manufacturer Quanta Computer, which has reportedly reached its maximum capacity for Apple Watch Series 4 production following "much better than expected demand" for the latest models, according to Apple analyst extraordinaire Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo also said Compal will be added as a second supplier of Apple Watch Series 4 models, which entails final assembly of the wearable.

Kuo believes Apple Watch shipments from suppliers to Apple will fall between 18 million and 19.5 million units in 2018. Apple does not disclose Apple Watch sales, grouping the device under its broad "Other Products" category in its earnings reports, alongside the Apple TV, AirPods, HomePod, and so forth.

Apple Watch is the world's most popular smartwatch by many metrics, including market share and revenue. In fact, Apple says the Apple Watch is the world's most popular watch of any kind, having surpassed Rolex.

Many models of the Apple Watch Series 4 ordered on Apple.com today are estimated to be delivered in late October in the United States, lending credence to strong demand, limited supply, or some combination of the two. With a second supplier coming on board in November, availability should improve.

Watch is gorgeous! I have the new XS in gold. Wish the gold watch didn't have feminine colors as standard. I don't want a pink band haha! Other than that, im getting one soon!

It looks great I just wish they didn't have such a tight grip on watch faces. There is so much potential for faces and they are really not doing a great job with it by keeping them all in house and only updating when there is a software update. What they really need is a watch face creator app so that you can just create your own completely without having to fall into their limitations for how many complications and of what size each face can have

Kind of ironic. With the increasing functionality, appeal, and acceptance of this devise Apple chooses to discontinue the SE. A smaller device many may have chosen to keep in their pocket/bag as interactions with the wrist increase. :apple:
I believe Apple simply wants to keep leading consumers to more expensive products and that's about it. Either a person has the money to play the Apple game or they're kicked off the playing field. I had hoped Apple would build an SE-sized iPhone but without the Touch ID button and using Face ID. A nice and compact, nearly bezel-less post-SE (X-Mini) smartphone would be quite nice. However, I don't think Apple gives a damn about what maybe only a few consumers want. I think Apple is only going for the most profitable items and, if true, I think that's a darn shame.

It's unlikely Apple will try to entice Android smartphone users in the manner you're suggesting. Fact #1: Most Android smartphone users are cheap and they're not going to spend that kind of money for an AppleWatch. Fact #2: Android users don't give a damn about privacy and are only interested in free services so they have no good reason to move from Android to iOS. They surely won't switch because of an AppleWatch. The iPod was different because it mainly played music using a simple, hidden OS.

Android OS completely owns the smartphone market with a crushing 86% market share percentage. Apple is going to keep gouging consumers with the most expensive devices on the planet and iOS market share will continue to fall. Apple simply doesn't give a damn about potential switchers from Android. Apple has this "who cares" attitude about gaining market share percentage. All Apple is interested in is making profits from that shrinking percentage of consumers willing to pay for what they see as being worthwhile Apple products. I'd love to see Apple get only as high as 20% smartphone market share and no more than that. However, even that will never happen. Google and Android will just keep pounding Apple with ever cheaper devices and iOS market share can't grow against that strategy.

Even as an Apple shareholder, I don't quite understand Apple's goals. Allowing constantly shrinking smartphone market share looks fugly to me. I think a line needs to be drawn at some point. How that's done, I have no idea. The iPhone SE was about the closest way I've seen, but even that's gone. Well, Apple is still selling bunches of older model iPhones, so maybe they'll prove useful, except in the BRIC nations. Android completely rules the BRIC nations and Apple refuses to do anything about it.

I've just picked up a used S3 SS for a very decent price.

I wonder what Apple will give me for my ceramic S3? My S4 is coming in a few weeks and the website only quotes up to the stainless. So, I'm not sure if there will be any difference/increase in refund.

I think used iPhones is Apple's plan to get more budget conscious consumers. It isn't a fully implemented plan right now, but I suspect it will be apparent soon. Many of those 6 and 6s that have had new batteries put into them are going to be around in the market for many more years. And Apple is still supporting 5S with software update this year. That won't show up in the market share for new sales numbers which we see reported all the time. But it will show up in services revenue. And it is in the usage stats for the companies who do free apps.

I used to think the same thing, but if you're healthy already, you probably won't waste much time constantly monitoring things. Maybe more than normal at first, but I'm sure you'd just lose interest after a while.

I sort of disagree. I needed to lose a bunch of weight and get in shape and my Apple Watch was my motivator, as odd as it sounds. I was able to blend technology with getting in better shape and losing weight which actually worked beautifully. I think if I didn't have the AW to monitor my workouts and make me try harder each day to close my rings, I might have lost interest.

I had a fitbit a few years ago, fell asleep and when I woke, it was on the bed somehow broken off of my wrist. My only alternative was to get an entire new device. That led to my easy decision to switch to the AW since I already had the IP. Stretch forward, having the AW, i've learned how many "Cardio" calories I generally have to burn a day in order to trend to lose weight vs sustain along with understanding HRs and things of that manner.

My next feat... get my 80+y/o mom to understand the IP and how the AW may be a good purchase for her.. we'll see.

It's turning into the new iPod. Everyone will have one in next few years.

Yes that I can see, if only for working out and exercise. I have no interest in wearing a watch otherwise.

And it would be great for traveling. A friend had his phone stolen in Europe, and was able to continue on with his day thanks to his Apple Watch. Sadly since it was setup, paired to and dependent on the phone, he was not able to use it as a way to verify the replacement phone he bought to retrieve his iCloud backup, which is another issue Apple needs to address.
