What material is the face of the watch made from? I only see reference to the back of the watch being black ceramic/sapphire. Earlier version had either sapphire (SS) or a composite (AL), I believe. Is that still the case or are they all made of the same material now?

You have to dig to find it, but the aluminum watches have X-ion glass on the front, while the SS watches have sapphire.

Thanks for finding that for me, I was just couldn't locate it. Anyone have any feedback on the two if they've owned both? I've decided to go the cheap route after owning a SS for a couple years and ordered an aluminum, I hope I don't regret it.

I’ve had the space grey sport since day one, and if you hold it up sideways to the light there are tiny scratches across the face, but they’re not visible normally. The case is perfect. Worn every day whether swimming, doing building work, or whatever. Looks great with a black Milanese loop. Ordered the series 4 mainly for a bit more processing power and the additional complications available on the larger screen, but I’ll likely get a fair bit back by selling the old one with the new band.

Not owned both (yet...) but after 3 years of love my Series 0’s ion-x has quite a few very faint scratches, one fairly big one (thankfully not over the screen) and a small scuff near the middle, none of which are really noticeable in regular use (i.e. when the screen’s on - the pictures look a lot worse than to the naked eye).

The aluminium on the other hand... quite a few scratches and dints that are pretty noticeable, underneath that space grey coating the aluminium is pretty much just regular aluminium and it shows. I expect scratches fly under the radar much better on the regular silver ones.

None of this really bothers me though (well, maybe the first one did), it’s just proof I’ve not been sat on me arse for 3 years.

On the flip side, how has your stainless faired?

I was able to order two Series 4 watches from Sprint. Shipping next Thursday to arrive on launch day. It's definitely time to upgrade from the original.

No problem :)

I had the Series 0 and am rocking the Series 1 right now, both were the aluminum models with the X-ion glass. I also have some "nicer" watches with sapphire glass. The X-ion is definitely more prone to scratches (i've scratched both) but that's the gamble I went with because I also didn't want the SS model.

I have both a SS2 and black SS2. I really like how the SS models look so that's why I went with them. The SS does start showing fine scratches but these can easily be buffed out with a SS cleaning cloth. The black model looks fine, just needs some cleaning. I would love to get the SS again but the cost, well you know, especially with upgrading my phone at the same time. I'll see how this goes, maybe I'll have no issues with the aluminum models.

Now the only thing left is a complete UI update. For a device that is front and center, the UI looks not just dated but rather tacky. Looking at the Hermes watch face, then switching from an elegant carefully designed face to cheesy UI elements is really jarring, especially the awful font used throughout the UI. Hopefully next year’s Watch OS update includes a complete facelift to the UI.

I was so surprised how fast it slipped to a 1 week delay after a few minutes of going live. It'll be nice to get excited again a week later after my iPhone.

It seams that T-Mobile only carries the cellular models? Makes sense, since they’re a mobile company. However I want the GPS only model and was really hoping they’d have it so I can just pay it monthly with my phone service.

Although mine is supposed to ship on 21st I've had the date slip back before so I'm not holding my breath...

My experience over many years has been just the opposite, Apple beats their initial order-day estimate.

Yeah look at these bastards and their response to my concern about the 21st shipping date:

And I actually wouldn’t care if I get it within a few days of launch. But it’s super misleading. We’ll see how it goes.

I was going to order from B&H until I read that fine print about shipping to customers in the order received. That 21st reference just appeared to be a come-on. There's no guarantee they even have a distributor pre-order in with Apple.

So I passed and ordered directly from Apple even though I've been a B&H customer for almost all cameras and electronics for at least 15 years. The copy was misleading at best.

It’s very misleading and unfortunate. And I only did it because Macrumors listed them as a vendor and I was drawn in to save on tax. Guess I can’t complain saving money on tax to get the watch weeks later.

I bought this one a couple years ago to go with my S0 black SS. It's cheap and looks great.

The main problem with most of the cheaper link bands is the difficulty with removing and adding links and missing the simpler mechanism for closing that Apple developed, but the price is quite prohibitive. Fortunately it is still compatible with the Series 4.

Sapphire (hence it being on the more expensive watches).

It's not quite so simple. The Sapphire is harder but more brittle, so it is more prone to shattering if dropped or impacted than the Ion-X glass. (And it is basically transparent aluminium if you're a Star Trek fan.) I think the scratch resistance is more important and that's why I paid for the SS even though the price increase over past years was painful. (And I really prefer black to gray.)

October 1-8 delivery through AT&T for a 44mm SS-WB.

Pretty good considering I got stuck in the process on Safari and had to switch to Chrome and start over!

Same here, I bet we would be able to pick one up at an AT&T store before Oct 1-8...I might give it a shot.

Can anyone confirm that the Watch's bluetooth 5 will work with the bluetooth 4.2 on my iPhone 6S? I have read that the bluetooth 5.0 standard is backwards compatible, but you never know... Thanks for any ideas.

I owned an S1 and S2 in SS and switched to aluminum in my S3. I also preordered an S4 aluminum. The SS is beautiful and there are occasions when I miss it but I really haven’t noticed that much of difference. I use my watch to workout so the aluminum is nice because it’s much lighter. They both share the exact same watch functions so it’s just not worth it to me to pay the extra cost to get SS.
