Apple Watch is a maturing product line, with increasingly incremental model differences.

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that it's shifting towards being more suited for biennial or even triennial upgrades

In other words Apple just made every existing charging cable and dock obsolete, including its own $100 MagSafe Duo.

Where have you seen it written that those won't charge Series7 just as fast as they charged the Series6?

I'll wait til current S5 goes to crap. So far it still does the job. Unless there's a game changing upgrade (which hasn't happened for me), then it really doesn't matter too much. The biggest change was from s3 to s4 IMO and still didn't pull trigger on S4. But since i went from 0-s5, I'm probably good til s9 or 10. I only care about notifications anyways. In general I don't get too excited about upgrading watches.

Leaning towards keeping my Series 4 for another year. Other than the always-on screen (which I’ve already passed up for years) and maybe that new dark green color, there’s nothing really compelling to me personally. Then again, I’m not a watch power-user. Series 1 was great for me. Series 4 has also been great. Based on how long these things have been lasting me, I may consider going SS or Ti next time (only have had aluminum models so far).

I’m on a Series 3 and it’s really doing all I need. I probably will upgrade once Apple drops watchOS support. But for now, I can live without all the fancy health features. I will get one for my mom though.

This year's review cycle has taught me that I really only want reviewers to compare previous models more than 12 months old. I don't care how the Series 7 compares to Series 6. Tell me why I, a series 3,4,5 owner should upgrade? Same for the iPhones 13. Tell me why the 2-3 year old model will be better suited upgraded.

Only Jason Snell did this in a meaningful way - https://sixcolors.com/post/2021/09/the-iphone-13-an-upgraders-guide/

Because, if I'm being more cynical....of course the series 7 isn't worth upgrading from a series 6. This isn't Apple's target anyway. They want series 3 and 4 owners to upgrade. so what's better from a series 3 to a 7? Can a professional reviewer lay that out?
Yup going from the 3 to the 7 will be a nice upgrade.

agree, for me, having had a S4 for 3+ years, the screen looks quite nice ... I will wait tile they are available in stores, take a look at them at that point and then decide on whether or not to upgrade

I don't get those people. First off, the 13 Pro was a meaningful update from the 12 Pro. Display, cameras, battery life, modem, SoC - all good improvements that add up to a noticeablely better phone. But also, upgrading every single year and expecting massive changes is ridiculous. It's pretty rare with such mature tech that we get to see huge leaps forward anymore.

Complaining about something/anything gives some people a little jolt of feel-good power and helps get them through the day.

Apple does the bare minimum in 2021, again. Both iPhone and Apple Watch releases are hardly upgrades at all.

The iPhone 13 Pro is far from the bare minimum, as proven by its battery life.

The Apple Watch, on the other hand...

Good chance the Watch 8 will have significant new tech and they just needed another cycle to work out the issues.

I don’t need to wear my watch to bed so it will last through the day and that’s good enough for me

I don’t use the sleeping functionality, but I find the alarm on my wrist to be fantastic to wake up to in the morning (and not bother anyone else in the house with an actual alarm). Most days I can just charge while shaving/showering, but every once in a while 15 min on the charger before bed is needed. All other times it’s on my wrist.

I may consider the SE next time if it has AOD as I really only use that, alarm, timer (love the multiple timers now), stopwatch, and notifications. I don’t do anything else with it (on S6 from S2). Hopefully I can keep this one for 4 years.

I have the 5.

The doesn't really do much for you as a sleep tracker, it won't tell you anything like if you got good quality of sleep by monitoring your heart rate, number of times you woke up etc. So I stopped wearing it to sleep and put it on the charger. This has the benefit that it will use Optimized Charging to keep the battery in good shape.

My Huawei Band 6 can do the same with one charge in every 10 days.

Only A guess here, but I suspect Apple backed out of the flat edge redesign “last minute” over some production issue. I will not be surprised to see bigger changes and more new features with series 8.

While I see what your saying and the extra life is appreciated but Just adding a bigger battery is kind of a so so upgrade. My 11PM lasts all day on a charge. So for me it’s a nothing upgrade.

With the caveat that I haven't yet seen a Series 7 in person, this seems like such an iterative update over the Series 6 that a useful question for those considering a purchase is whether they would have been inclined to upgrade to a Series 6 this year had there been no update at all. If the answer to that question is no, it's highly likely that any upgrade urge at this point is the result of Apple's marketing and general perceived "newness."

What age demographic hasn’t used FT or been on a Zoom call now? 😄
I’m 51. Work in a hospital. Worked the last 2 years harder than ever. 6 days a week. Never had to participate in a zoom meeting. I answer the phone. That’s enough. I know what they look like dot need to see them unless it’s in person.
I could never handle doing zoom calls.

I opened ft when it came out once and a few rare time when My dad will ft me and I won’t turn on video.

im not a outgoing person. Tend to keep to myself. Prefer my cats to other people.
