That’s not a 5% larger screen… it’s closer to 10% larger. A screen expands in 2 dimensions the longer the diagonale.

Apple is working on an Apple Watch Series 8 model with a larger display, according to DSCC's Ross Young and Haitong International Securities's Jeff Pu.

Apple-Watch-8-Unreleased-Feature-Thumb.jpg

In October last year, Young suggested that the Apple Watch Series 8 could come in three display sizes. Now, responding to a query about the rumor on Twitter, Young claims that the additional display size joining the Apple Watch lineup will be 1.99-inches in size diagonally.

Likewise, in a note to investors seen by MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pu mentioned that Apple supplier Luxshare will be the "sole supplier" for a "high-end" 2-inch Apple Watch model this year. It seems likely that the 1.99-inch display size presented by Young has simply been rounded up by Pu.

A 1.99-inch Apple Watch display size compares to 1.691-inches on the 41mm Apple Watch Series 7 and 1.901-inches on the 45mm Apple Watch Series 7. The new display size would offer an additional 0.089-inches of space diagonally over the 45mm Apple Watch Series 7, which is almost a five percent increase.

It is possible that the slightly larger display size relates to the rumored redesign for the Apple Watch Series 8 with flat edges. Earlier this year, the leaker known as "ShrimpApplePro," who correctly said that the Apple Watch Series 7 would feature a rounded design like the Apple Watch Series 6, claimed that Apple was working on a "flat front glass display" for the Apple Watch Series 8. It seems plausible that an Apple Watch design with flat edges, first raised by leaker Jon Prosser in 2021, would feature a slightly larger flat top surface area, which could explain a five percent display size increase, although this remains speculation.

It is also of note that Young and Pu's claims could also line up with rumors about this year's "rugged" Apple Watch model, which is expected to join the Apple Watch lineup alongside the other Series 8 models. Flagship Apple Watches have historically only ever been offered in two size options, so a third, larger display size could correlate with a new, additional Apple Watch "Explorer Edition" variant, especially if this is also the model to offer a new design with flat edges.

Larger display, no new features…are they just going to repeat this trend with the Watch every 2 years?

I had a look at the series 7 and without Apples new and special watch face I couldn‘t see a difference to my series 5. Sp a redesign would be a step in the right direction. But what I really need is a smartwatch capable of
  • 3 - 7 days of battery life
  • Fitness tracking
  • Payment
  • Act as hr monitor for other devices (bicycle computer)
  • Store music
  • Display push notifications
Such devices exist, not from Apple, but they do exist. And it is sad, that I cannot use the HR monitor of my watch just because Apple doesn‘t want me to.

YAWNNNNN... Give us things that are going to change the game, better battery life, better complications (or custom ones), the increase in screen size is just a gimmick at this point because innovation has completely stalled on AW for years now since AW4. The experience in the last 4ish? generations are essentially identical, OS has remained almost the same too...

The way this article is written is confusing, but I don't think the maths are wrong. Ross Young is referring 1.99 inch as the diagonal length of the display. But 41mm and 45 mm (the sizes used by Apple) are referring to the vertical length of the Watch case. We cannot strictly refer to the vertical length of the watch to calculate the screen area increase.

So, if the diagonal screen size for the S7 45 mm is 1.9 inch for a screen area of 1143 mm2, we can roughly approximate that the screen area for a bigger S8 with 1.99 inch diagonal is 1200 mm2, which is less than 5% more surface over the 45 mm S7

Series 5
40 mm (759 mm2) - 326 ppi 394x324 - 1.53"
44 mm (977 mm2) - 326 ppi 448x368 - 1.78"

Series 7
41 mm (904 mm2) - 326 ppi 430x352 - 1.69"
45 mm (1143 mm2) - 326 ppi 484x396 - 1.9"

Series 8
?? mm (??? mm2) - 326 ppi ???x??? - 1.??"
?? mm (12?? mm2) - 326 ppi ~506x414 - 1.99"

(506x414)/(484x396) = 1.09 or 9% bigger for largest Series 8 screen

Not necessarily. Different battery technology and more efficient electronics can make a big difference. But need to save something for Watch 15 ;)

Then they need to use the same technology as Garmin.
How else can Garmin get 5 to 7 days with their AMOLED displays yet Apple can only get 2 days.

Or maybe the ’problem’ is watchOS.

I wonder at what point we may see a real design change, not just widening a screen and features changing. I think Apple really needs the next Jony Ive to come along and inspire.

The only thing I care about Apple watch 8 is its alloy case in space grey, otherwise, they will not have my money once again... I'm not paying a premium for a steel case in the colour I want, the entire reason I didn't upgrade to the 7 is that I don't want a blue watch.

The new watch can have all the new features and looks if doesn't come in black or space grey it's a pass for me.

This years iPhone and Apple Watch are gonna be such a snore. At least the iPad pro will get an m2.
Also a snore. I’ve got an M1 12.9 iPad Pro, and neat as the M1 exclusive features are like Stage Manager, the novelty wears off. The M2 won’t change that, and design wise, there’s not much they can do to improve the aesthetics-it’s already a great looking device.

Why would they flat the screen when they introduced the curved display on Series 7?

Because they can?

I sold home audio at a job out of high school. The companies would literally swap the sides the volume knob was on to get people to think it was 'new and improved', and the sad part was, people would practically line up to buy it. Same specs, the knob is on the other side. I remember when big knobs came in to being. 'OH, THE KNOB IS BIGGER, IT'S GOT TO BE BETTER!' Nope. One vendor used white front panels, hoping that would be the key to massive sales. That was, unbelievably, a bridge too far. People hated the white face. I mean, we sold a few, sure, but I think they ended up offering a black face plate, JIC people didn't want the white, and then, as I remember, started installing the black face, and adding the white face in the box. Weird. I'd have thought it would have sold better. :D

Apple has to do *something* to get people to buy... Make it rounded, make it bigger, make it flatter...

For sure a larger screen if it can have a slight curve to support that screen size and not look way too odd. I think that'll look good.

Besides more space to house more sensors/battery. Solar recharging like in age old calculators, garm!n watches, why not!

I just hope we have the curved edges, Apple going towards the Flat Edge Philosophy for iPhones is in my opinion a disastrous mark on Apple's design history, at least keep the Watch away from it, Hope the curved edges are retained
