Better display is good and all but what the Apple Watch desperately needs is better battery life. Much better battery life.
i think the battery life of the 7, regarding the rest series, it´s amazing. More if you don´t use the absurd "always on". More than 24 hours.
And the fast charge is stunning.

I don't understand why people get worked up with 'rumors'. Until Apple actually tells you what is to come, these things are POINTLESS!
A Mac user since 1990 when I was 45. My eyes are not the same as then. A little more display space for slightly larger letters means better readability under all conditions. I like the larger text size for my iPhone. Three choices would be great.
77 years old tech savvy guy?. Wait for me!!. Not that you are “old”, just not in the “common” age to enjoy tech. Now I am 47 and I sometimes ponder if I will like and be able to consume “tech” in my 80s. I guess that if there is an interest, there are means!. Passion is not a matter of age.

So confusing to have an article sprinkled with dimensions in inches and mm. Computers are all in inches and watches in mm, can’t we agree to do all as metric?!

America, enough now with imperial measurements. Don't you see how 1.691 and 1.901 inches are just ridiculous units of measurement when compared to 41 and 45mm? The rest of the world works in metric. Nice, tidy, easily calculable units of 10 for everything. Grow up.

i hate the idea of watches getting bigger. why? most people’s wrists are small. i don’t want a massive thing on my wrist. 40 and 44mm were the peak. i tried a series 7 and returned it

Some of the comments in this thread are tiresome.

The Apple Watch isn’t designed to entertain you. It’s a functional, wearable device designed to help you with wellbeing, stay connected and perform light weight interactions.

Changing the design to the fake square rumours from last year offers no functional benefit. Some suggest it might allow for a slightly higher capacity battery. Perhaps but it won’t suddenly go from a rated 18 hours of battery to 36. Maybe a couple of hours at best.

Changing a design just because people are ‘bored’ is also a stupid reason to change it. Especially if it leads to a less ergonomic user experience. Again this is not a device designed to entertain you.

The renders are little more than fan fiction. Apple is very unlikely to make design alterations this year because it did so last year. They might not be the tweaks you wanted but they added a functional benefit in the form of a larger display.

Here’s what Apple should actually do:

- Improve battery life with enhancements in display technology, battery density (or battery chemistry) and a more efficient processor
- Retain the design unless changing it will offer a functional improvement to user experience
- Continue to add new health sensors to empower more people to take control of their well-being and fitness

That might not excite you or entertain you. But it will result in a much better user experience. That isn’t to say I’m against a design change. But I don’t believe in change for the sake of change. If you have a short attention span and can’t cope without a design change, I think TikTok has 15 second videos to help.

bring on the next health feature! I do wish it was faster. I don’ know if CPU or the network is the issue.

A square apple watch does not seem elegant at all. Very soft squared (Filleted) edges on the 8 might be tolerable.... We'll see.... Still not convinced looking at some rounded edge wood and metal cuts that it will be as nice to touch as the current apple watch. The flat sides of the 13 are just not as pleasant to hold as the 6-11 series were.

Polished CHAMFER edges would be real nice on the watch. Get a little *bling, bling* on the watch like the 5s.

Square on rugged makes sense, because "who cares?": it's meant to be fugly and tough.

This is what I am referring to when I say soft rounded edges. I just cropped this from the 2021 MBP.

Honestly, that iPhone 12/13 slab design mock-up for the Watch 8 we’ve been predicting for a while now has not grown on me. It just looks like it would be uncomfortable to wear. Not to mention, it wouldn’t age well. Looks like a cheap Chinese knockoff.

My recommendation would be more of the rounded, contour edges of the new MacBook Pro’s and Air. It’s a squared off design yes, but it’s a little softer.
I'm pretty sure the S4-S7 aesthetics are here to stay for the standard Apple Watch and won't change significantly as the design is instantly recognisable to most of us.

But I do think Apple will experiment with the lineup this year and offer one new model that will feature the more squared "slab" design, the "rugged" AW.

I've read so many AW reviews by outdoors/athlete types that all praise AW but can't use it because of the short battery life and concerns about breaking it.

Offering an AW geared towards the "outdoors" demographic seems like an easy win for Apple.

America has rarely does the right thing these days.

I can't imagine Apple using a watch design only for a single iteration (Series 7). Maybe the rumor is related to the 2023 model.
Although I get what you mean, it was just a bit of an adjustment on an existing design (S4-S6), like, say, the iPhone 8. I can see them keeping the S7 around as a cheaper model and in the future reuse as a Watch SE. That's still plenty of mileage out of a small redesign.

I see no reason in upgrading if they do not seriously improve battery life
It doesn't seem like Apple wants to add any thickness (depth) to the standard AW. In fact, I think they want to keep making it thinner and only care to increase battery life through a faster chip and more efficient battery life management (low-power mode, etc.).

They'll only be happy once AW reaches standard wristwatch thinness.

My only hope to see an AW with a significantly better battery is this long-rumoured "rugged" AW, one that emphasis durability and battery-life a little more than the standard AW. Maybe something for the outdoors/tri-athlete demographic?

Obviously all speculation. The "rugged" AW could be nothing more than a regular AW with flat sides and stronger front glass.

But I hope it's unmistakably different to the standard AW and has a way bigger battery.

I don't honestly now why the display needs to be bigger. I'm still on a series 4 and I never wish I had more display space (smaller bezels sure).

Better and/or custom watch faces... now that's a different matter.
Go try on a series 7. I thought my series 5 was plenty big. Now that i have a 7 I couldn’t go back, it’s exactly the right size. I never realized I needed just a little bit bigger (that’s what she said.)

I don't get it, honestly. If earlier rumors are true, this is going to be quite a boring refresh. How unfortunate.
It would be very Apple to not do any improvements to the S7 chip(S6, really) but instead focus on this "rugged" AW as the "new" thing for AW 2022.

It will have the same old S6/S7 chip and specs, but it will be more durable and have a much bigger battery.

Well, really just a bigger battery would get many, many AW users to upgrade. That's really all Apple would have to do for S8 to keep sales high for AW 2022/2023.

nice. i had the largest size SE and felt it was far too small.

maybe if the new watch OS is improved ill get a watch again. i remember there being lots of software issues.

The battery on my S7 is rarely less than 50%. Somedays, due to sleep issues, I have 19 hours credit for 19 hours of standing. My display goes off unless I need to check something. Same with my iPhone Pro Max.

There is more than ample battery capacity if one actually plans a little. And I use the watch phone option quite often cause I left the iPhone in the house when I went out into the yard.

So far in my life, I have not been forced at gun point to buy any Apple product. We all still have a freedom to choose our electronics.

The last 10 years or so there have been no duds for me or my wife. Our Apple products have just worked as advertised on each product's release date. The new modules may perform faster or have newer designs but that can be either progress or planned obsolesence.

If one does not like an Apple product, then do not buy it. If one does not own a particular Apple product, I do not understand how a non-owner can comment intelligently on an item with which they have no actual owner experience.

Just my $.02

A better rumour is apple is working on a THINNER watch instead of a bigger screen

...and also a 50% charge in 10 mins

This seems great for anyone that needs to upgrade from a Series 3 on down but for anyone else to me at least it just seems more practical to keep the watch you have until it can't run the latest watchOS anymore. Or in my case, if they make a big ass rapper from the early 2000's sized watch..

5% larger, you say?

Hmmm... this might get me to buy my first Apple Watch.

I always thought the Apple Watch display was about 5% too small for my tastes...

:p

Why? I wear mine every day. Workouts of roughly 2 hours per day counting mobility work and taking my dog for a walk each night, sleep tracking, and I charge it for 10 minutes while I’m in the shower in the mornings and at night. And it’s the cellular version which I use when I’m outside or away from my phone at work.

Reminds me of the comments about the iPhone 4 (“left behind in a bar”) before its official release. Today, the iPhone 4 is considered one of the best iPhone designs :)

Anyone remember the all glass flexible Nokia phone you could slap on your wrist? We need that design.
