I stopped wearing a watch around seven years ago as everywhere I look I can see a clock: in the car, in the house, on my computer, etc. When I did wear one I felt guilty for wasting money if I spent $100 on a watch. $350 is just not going to happen. In addition I just haven't seen any reports of what it's supposed to do that make me even want to consider it. If I had an extra $350+ burning a hole in my pocket I've got better things to spend it on than an accessory for my phone.

That is what I feel also, but I remember thinking "why would I need a giant iphone" when the iPad first came out.

So, I will wait and see what this phone has to offer. :)

Personally, I'm freaking excited about this!
I noted how Sullivan was impressed that it "had become an essential part of this person's life". Even Tim Cook recently said he "couldn't live without it".
Is that just marketing hype, or is this thing awesome in ways we haven't imagined yet? Maybe a little of both?

It isn't hype. You can't live without the Apple Watch once you start using it. When you try to take it off, it injects lethal poison into your wrist.

While the price tag is not particular low for everyday spending as a "watch" or "multifunction watch". What most people don't realize is that items like this, and at this price point is somewhat average is terms of pricing.

Let's just compare apple to apple (no pun intended here). A typical Garmin GPS watch is anywhere from $100-$500, I call this a multi-function watch because unlike regular watch it has multiple functions (let's for now ignore whatever those functions might be). An apple watch, I'd say is in the same multi-function category, it is certainly aimed to do a lot of things. So doing an apple to apple comparison is it really that much out of the norm? What if they decided to stick a GPS into it at the end?

Sure not every one needs a watch like this, and the watch might not be useful for everybody. But is it really that expensive for what it can do? I certainly don't see many people making negative comments toward Garmin's $400+ watch.

So I guess what's I'm saying is, giving almost the same functionality as other type of multi-function watches and at almost the same price point (comparing with other high end models), why the disapproval?

Note, I'm only using Garmin as the main example, but I know many other companies with similar price point for their specialty watches.

It needs to be able to operate in stand-alone mode with voice and data connectivity for situations where I can't take the phone with me.

Except people didn't buy a wristwatch and continue wearing their pocket watch. The wristwatch replaced the pocket watch.

The Apple Watch doesn't replace the iPhone. It's in addition to it. In fact, it needs the iPhone to function fully.

It's just another diddy little computer that doesn't do anything that the other diddy little computer in your pocket can't do already.

I'm glad to see you only read a single sentence of my entire post. Did you read the rest? The benefits of the location on your wrist is not changed in any way by needing an additional item in your pocket.

Once again, I invite you to read my ENTIRE comment. It doesn't do anything the pocket computer can't? I've already shared one example of the potential, enabled ONLY because it is something attached to your body. "Replacing" the iPhone in my pocket was not one of the things i mentioned.

Good grief, it is 10mm + about 1-1.5 mm for the smaller round thing underneath. Compare it to other watches worn by men and it isn't that thick at all. The main problem is battery tech VS what tech they put in it. They could make it much much smaller if it could do much less.

Compare it to no watch :D

The second one really looks like a twenty year old Casio to me.

Haha. It really does.

I'm a watch collector and the Apple Watch does not tickle my fancy. I would buy it for the functionality it offers (first world "needs"), not for its looks.

Apple spent 3 years on this product. Tim Cook says he uses it every day and can't live with out it. And you think Apple is going to quickly lose interest?

Whoah, an endorsement from the CEO of the company. I'm in! :D

In all seriousness, I have mixed feelings on it still, which may change after it's released.

As far as the fashion aspect of it, I do think one of its shortcomings is evident in the second picture. The vast majority of the time you will see this on someone's wrist, the screen will be blank. So it's essentially going to look like a bracelet with a chunky black rectangle in the middle of it. The ability to have your own custom watch face on it is really just self serving since the only one who will really see it is the wearer.

Out of interest, do you regret buying it? If it broke tomorrow, would you replace it?

No, I don't regret buying it. It has come in handy at times while at work to quickly read messages (I do IT and am constantly moving about the building),
But honestly if it broke tomorrow, no, I wouldn't replace it. It's still just as easy to reach into my pocket and glance at my phone, expecially considering there are times where i need to respond, and while I can respond via voice to the watch, its still faster. easier and more private to just type out a message on my phone within seconds.

Like I said... I think smart watches are more of a novelty item. They try and fix a problem that does not exist.

A toy

Something I'd like if I was in seventh grade. Not something a professional would wear.

I just don't see what the big deal is with the watch. Sure, it has the Apple brand on it, I'll wait and see what becomes of it. I'm not too keen on the idea of having to charge it everyday. I've had my solar powered watch for 10 years now and have never had to change the battery. It does everything I want in a watch... Tells time.

I'm almost certain 12 years ago someone said about their Nokia phone. What's with all these Symbian applications? My phone does everything I want it to do... Lets me make phone calls.

Apple Watch Policies

Apple does not discriminate against any person(s), especially male, that chooses to wear an Apple Watch with a pink sweater. If you see or hear any employees discriminating against such persons, immediately report it to your nearest supervisor in accordance with the Apple Watch watch group.

In any case, compliment them on how nicely the Apple Watch compliments their pink sweater.

I imagine many people said the same thing back at the advent of the wristwatch...."I've got my pocket watch, why do I need a wristwatch."

You're right that you imagine it, because that never happened. Of course there were people who scoffed at the wristwatch, but it's not at all the same thing here. Back then relevant industry was not already saturated with choices. Nobody is debating that the wrist is the most logical place for a watch. The point is that today, unlike way back when, the world is littered with clocks and screens and all imaginable forms of information everywhere. Other than when I am sleeping, there is at least one screen around me at all times and they are all more compelling than some tiny thing on my wrist. Between the dual monitors at work, the ipad, the iphone, and the smart TV, there is really just no more room.

The consumer electronics industry is trying to create a "fifth" category of screens because they have already convinced everyone to buy the first four (phone, tablet, computer, tv) and the upgrade cycle for all four of those is slowing down (tablet, phone) or already slowed down (computer, tv). It's not logical to go bigger than TV, so they're going smaller than phone. I don't blame them for trying, but I doubt there is enough consumer demand for this fifth category to sustain it. As I said above, I'm already surrounded by screens at all times with limitless information.

While I hope Apple has their hand in the next big tech innovation, this isn't it.

I believe that many of you aren't getting it, what the apple watch really is. Its more fashion then technology if you ask me. This watch with a nice outfit is really a wonderful combination.

What I would like to see on the new watch would be the ability to read accurately glucose levels.

Maybe I'm alone here but I haven't worn a watch since I was a child, and I don't plan on spending $350 for a new watch when my iPhone can tell the time, check my mail and do pretty much anything I need when I'm mobile.

Congrats, you are probably not in the segment that Apple is marketing to :)

Tim Cook says he uses it every day and can't live with out it.

He's the boss. What else is he going to say? "It's a bit rubbish and I'd rather have a Samsung Gear"?

No, I didn't.

Thanks. Interesting to hear the opinions of someone who actually has a smartwatch and it confirms what I've always suspected (which is nice).

Keep hating, haters. This is the same pattern as always.

iPod? An MP3 player? THIS is what they came up with to save the company? Why would I need that? It only works with Macs and it's too expensive anyway. Fail.

This is what they came up with for a smartphone? A $600 touch screen that doesn't do anything? And it's only on AT&T and doesn't even have 3G? Fail.

I can't believe they actually named it iPad. What a joke. Nobody is going to buy this thing. Especially because it's just on a blown up version of iOS instead of OS X like it should be. $500 starting price for a big phone? There's no way this thing takes off. Fail.

Fill in the blank with just about every hater comment on this thread for the Watch. I'm willing to bet that most people hating on it would have never bought one anyway.

Of course not. But that's not really tempering expectations now is it? If anything Cook is doubling down. Of course Cook is going to be biased. Even so, since he's using the product every day and none of us here have used it at all I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt that he's not blowing smoke.

However if Apple gives up on this product as easily as you suggest then I really question Cook (and the rest of the Executive team's) leadership.

Expensive but looks cheesy. Not going to appeal to the flash watch crowd or the fashionable.

Hope nerds is a big market.

The one in the coffee shop looks incredibly huge on the guys wrist. I really can't see tons of people flocking to them or at least not the larger of the 2.

Just in time for my birthday... but I think I will wait until the second gen... especially after the 3rd gen iPad fiasco. I'm still bitter about it
