In fashion photos, everything can be photoshopped. I am sure, the device is about 50% larger than shown.

Can you honestly say that with a straight face? "Apple's getting into fashion".... LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.... It's a watch.

So you think Apple is going to reinvent fashion? HAHAHA... do you have any more good jokes?

The watch in this case is fashion or function.

So I guess I should have stated I was saying it with a bit of "tonge in cheek.."

Still, with all the Fashion people that Apple has added to its ranks, one has to imagine (at least if your imagination is a big as mine:) ) that they are doing more than just a watch in there foray into fashion.

If you think wearing an Apple watch is going to make you as hot as a model, you need a reality check. The watch will definitely be pushed hard by Apple with their ads, but shouldn't the watch push itself? Remember the ipod commercials? It showed people enjoying the freedom of the music player. If the watch can't do this, and has to depend on fashion only, then it is doomed.
It's kind of odd to me that you don't understand the importance of marketing even though you just reminisced how great the iPod commercials were at pushing the idea of freedom. Fashion is pretty much pure marketing. Otherwise we'd all just be wearing white tees and tan khakis.

If you think fashion doesn't matter at all, I'd ask if your entire wardrobe is made up of generic no-name clothes from Target? If it isn't, then you just disproved your own argument.

Why does everyone assume that just because it's being pushed as a fashion statement that the watch has no usefulness? Is there some unwritten rule that they are mutually exclusive?

Nah, she's just wearing the smaller version.
She's also 5'11 so the watch may just look small by comparison.

I wonder if Angela Ahrendts helped with this at all?

My guess is that she used her connections from her Burberry days to get in front of Vogue, Colette, etc.

My guess is Apple will initially target women more than men. You don't court Vogue if you're going after men. Perhaps Apple thinks it will be tougher to get men to part with their traditional watches so go for women first.

It may not necessarily be a case of targeting women more than men, but just a difference in how they target each. Unlike phones, computers, and a lesser extent tablets, no one "needs" a watch. Men or women might buy an iPhone, Mac or iPad because they need a phone or PC and Apple is one of the leading providers of them. For Apple Watch to succeed it needs to be something people want on its own merits.

A lot of men might want to buy the Apple Watch because it's the latest techno gadget, but not as many women would do so. However, if it's seen as a fashion accessory it could generate its own demand.

She may be 5'11" but like most Asians she has a small build and narrow wrists. The 38mm looks well proportioned.

Is aluminum cheaper than steel? This being the question I'd already asked. The lighter aluminum bezel could be seen as a feature.

Raw stainless steel is about half as expensive per pound as aluminum, but stainless steel is also seen as more "premium." Mid-range watches are made with the 316L stainless steel that is being used in the Apple Watch. Sapphire is also more expensive than glass. Also, the Sport watches are sold exclusively with the plastic bands, while the regular Apple Watch is sold with a combination of plastic, leather, and stainless steel bands.

I'm sorry but this article just made me laugh. We are getting Apple product endorsements from fashion models now. Whatever next. Has Apple totally abandoned the tech world for fashion accessories? Apple is fast becoming a "label" just like Nike or Burberry or Gucci. The product quality or technical expertise takes second place to the design and desirability of the label.

Wow. I'm impressed.

The watch photographs quite well, and is clearly the only "smart" watch designed with women in mind.

I wonder, though: Will the display actually be "on" in the contexts shown in these photos? It's my understanding that the display stays off until activated by a gesture or button-press. So if I'm correct, the watch will look more like this:

Still nice, but less flashy, less expressive, less "personal."

What do you all think?

I think I agree with you.

Stainless steel isn't a cheap material and costs a lot more than standard mild steel. The price of the raw materials is probably quite similar (depending on the exact grades used) because you get 3 times more aluminium watches out of the same weight of material because of their different densities.

The stainless steel watch also gets the sapphire crystal, ceramic back and leather and metal bands which suggest it's going to be more expensive.

You're probably right, but I think they put the screen on for editorial purposes. It would seem odd to have a blank screen on a spread about the watch. Kind of like Apple's website showing the products with the screens on.

They're targeting both.

They're targeting women this way because the technology demonstrated through the keynote and videos already sells itself to men like every other apple product.

Women care more about what other women are wearing than men do. So they have to justify the price to women who are already conditioned to spend large amounts of money on something that is "fashionable".

The watch already does push itself in a similar fashion through the keynote and web videos just like the ipods, iphone, ipads, etc.

Only difference is that mp3 players, phones, and tablets aren't consumer devices that you wear and therefore dont have an inherent connection to the 400+ year industries and societal cultures known as "fashion" and "personal watches".

Apple didn't JUST invent watches, they've already existed as vanity items for centuries so they have to appeal to already established societal notions. Even now more so since people dont need them as much for time. So it makes sense that they're taking a new approach since this product segment is considerably different than any others they've entered.

I don't think there's any question that they put it on for editorial purposes, and of course it would be odd to show a blank screen.

But unfortunately that's the reality of the product: It's mostly going to be seen in its "off" state. To show otherwise verges on false advertising.

Like I said, I think the watch looks nice even when it's off. I'm just putting these mockups out there for those who haven't considered what it might look like in a non-editorial context.
