How do I get the button there on my keyboard? I know it's not functional but for Gd sakes, someone please answer

So, if you are going to use speech to text recognition to send a text, why not just call the person?? =)

Maybe they are unavailable to call but can read a text (in a meeting for example), or you don't have a calling plan/contract/minutes/credit. There are lots of reasons, I'm not going to list them all because theu should really be obvious.

What if i dont want to call, and/or the receiving end does not want any calls? You're "argument" is based on that the only thing that separates a call from a text is audio vs. alpha. Well, youre wrong.

OnT: WP7 has really nice voice integration. Not that i see myself ever using it, if i had a WP7 device, but still, mango looks great.

Please, please don't make this an iPhone 5 exclusive feature, Apple! My iPhone 4 can handle it, I swear!

Check out Dragon Dictate and Dragon Go! - free Nuance apps. I use Dragon Dictate for emails - can use it for SMS, making notes, and other social media functions. Work remarkably well - Nuance really is getting better and better. :D

Also Dragon Microphone with allows you to use your iPhone4 as a wireless input mic if you have Dragon Dictate (paid app) on your computer.

Who here thinks that this feature, while possible on the iPhone 4, has been obfuscated on account of it being an exclusive feature for the iPhone 5? I mean this is the only major feature for iOS 5 that wasn't announced with the rest of the features along with a lack of iPhone 5 announcements.

EDIT: Damn! I just read the OP again and MR used the word "obfuscated." I thought I was being so clever!

I was exactly going to post this...

For me, it also looks like they will keep this feature for the iPhone 5...

Does anyone actually use the huge Return key while texting? I often hit it by mistake while aiming for Space, but it has no purpose in texting. Apple should remove it from the text keyboard which would leave more room for the microphone button.

Having said that, I fear that I'll inadvertently hit the microphone button while trying to hit space which sounds like it would be a nuisance. I hope there's some delay on it bringing up the speech interface.

I keep reading comments asking why there's a need for speech to text.

Personally, I think it's a great way to give the fingers a rest, especially if you're wanting to type out something long like an email or write a story etc. I find, especially on the iPad, that I'd love to be able to just talk instead of type out long sentences. The medical community heavily uses speech to text when working on documents.

I've been looking forward to this quite a bit and am glad they're including it.

They need a better way to access the speak to text feature. Don't like it because it shortens the space bar. I don't care because I have the stupid iPod Touch 2G which I don't use that much anymore since it can't do anything.

If only the poor sucker who invented the wheel could have patented it... Oh well. ;)

We'd still have multiple wheel makers suing each other and sites like "pirellirumors.com", "wheelmodo.com" (which steals new wheel models from Pirelli) and rims that break while driving because we're not "driving it the right way"...

(Note: Pirelli was the first brand off the top of my head... not endorsing anything).

It would actually be nice to have that button there. That way, people can get used to the smaller keyboard before it's officially launched.

I hope this works as well/better than google voice. That is one feature I really enjoyed while using Android phones at my last job. Quick text message without typing, or emails etc... really works nice. Dragon for iOS is ok, but a pita to have to copy/paste or send it to another app, much quicker to simply respond to a text by hitting one key, say what you want, send.

Bring it on!

This hiding kind of sucks and it's all due to developers who leak info from the private beta. I wish Apple could seriously go after every single one that leaks these things. You signed an NDA, for god's sake :(

That little rant aside: yay for voice recognition, if it works well :D

Yet it's MacRumors, a reputable tech site, who's reporting the hiding of this interface change ... yet you jump up on your high horse and have a go at non-developers and toss around "NDA" at will.

As an ios user with motor skills limitations, I would be extremely disappointed if this were the case. Putting aside the fact that I just got my touch for Christmas, there isn't really a good hardware justification for limiting the functionally to a hypothetical 5th generation device. The microphone is already in there.

This is a welcome addition, though I will probably only use it occasionally. I'll just be glad to hear the Android fans shut up about it. It's cool but not THAT useful for a lot of people. I wonder if this will somehow tie in with Apple's purchase of Siri and the rumored assistant functionality that has yet to be disclosed in iOS 5. Apple usually adds features only when they've nailed them down pat. What extra will this bring to the table. Just the assistant?

It WORKS!

Well, if you have the iOS 5 beta, that means you are a developer. I haven't tried this, as I haven't played with the beta or anything, but I would assume based on this article that in the app you are programming you create a text window with the keyboard set to Dvorak.
