What do you mean no. It is so pointless to have a talk to text someone. That is why it is call TEXTING!!!! Are you just that lazy not to call the person if your going to waste the energy to speak?

You do realize this isn't JUST for texting right? It's system wide, so anywhere you can type you could (if you choose) speak.

And don't forget most people speak faster than they can type. (150 wpm speaking vs. 30-80 wpm typing)

Wrong. You're obviously not an inventor or innovator and without respect or regard for smart hard work. Freeloader maybe?

If only the poor sucker who invented the wheel could have patented it... Oh well. ;)

Well you are supposed to say "Sudo Make me a sandwich!"
Then it should work!

I wonder how many people on here actually got that... It gave me a chuckle. ;)

Why would they want to hide it so badly?
Maybe because they were not sure whether it would be fully functional in time for the release of iOS 5?

Or because it's a new secret feature that will be part of iOS 5.1.

I'd never heard of Dvorak before.

Interesting article for anyone interested in it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard

It's an alternative layout for keyboards (as opposed to the QWERTY layout that is so prevalent,) that supposedly allows:
1.) People to learn the layout in 1/3 the time it takes to learn QWERTY.
2.) People to type 2x as fast as they do on QWERTY.
3.) People to suffer from less muscle strains from extended typing sessions.

Why don't you people think it is funny a "post PC device" uses code names "Dvorak keyboard" and "forward delete key"? Next they will be using "Windows 1.0" and "DOS 2.2".

Rocketman :D

Possibly because they're perfectly reasonable? A forward delete key would be like a delete key on a real keyboard, and a DVORAK keyboard actually has a thread on hear dedicated to requesting it from Apple in future iOS updates. I don't get how you associate these things with old Microsoft products?

its possible...

that this might lead to the iPod touch seeing a revision where it gets a microphone packed into its already tiny body, along with presumably faster silicon

In this instance, they've obfuscated the names of various pieces of the interface. For example, calling the microphone button "forward delete key" and the keyboard pretends to be a "Dvorak" keyboard.

I wouldn't mind a Dvorak option for a soft keyboard. However, Apple would have to spend a lot of type making autocorrect work properly, so I'm not holding my breath.

#2 is debatable. It's really not about speed, but rather the comfort that comes with using the home row much more often than with QWERTY. By quitting QWERTY cold turkey, I picked up Dvorak in about 2 months (i.e. getting roughly back to my old speed). Combined with an ergonomic keyboard, it makes a huge difference.

The QWERTY keyboard came about because the original typewriters would jam frequently, and it was an attempt to separate commonly used keys. For a regular keyboard, going to Dvorak makes sense because it greatly improves typing speed and efficiency. Now that we are using two thumbs on a virtual keyboard on the iPhone, the original reason for going QWERTY might actually make sense again.....

btw- Nuance sucks. After licensing tech to MacSpeech, then eventually buying them back, the Windows version of Dragon Dictate is vastly superior to the Mac version....here's hoping that Apple's interest in Nuance will get them to devote more resources to bringing Dragon Dictate mac up to par.

This is nice, but I'm hoping for a more comprehensive voice recognition, I'd like to see a solution where I can hold down the key on the headset and say "Text to <person>" and the phone acknowledges this by some sort of audio cue to tell me the phone is ready for transcribing.

Me too.

But for that, the most logical solution would be a dedicated hardware button on the side of the phone.

A command button.

Please, please don't make this an iPhone 5 exclusive feature, Apple! My iPhone 4 can handle it, I swear!

it'd be sick to finally be able to just say the next song or command you want without having to worry about it coming out completely wrong

hopefully its a leap in the right direction

Who here thinks that this feature, while possible on the iPhone 4, has been obfuscated on account of it being an exclusive feature for the iPhone 5? I mean this is the only major feature for iOS 5 that wasn't announced with the rest of the features along with a lack of iPhone 5 announcements.

EDIT: Damn! I just read the OP again and MR used the word "obfuscated." I thought I was being so clever!

Not sure whether it will be possible on the iP4, but I suspect it won't be available for it, in any case.

If you can not figure out why someone would want to do this, then you are probably not mature enough to have access to a smartphone yet.

So when that time comes I am sure you will understand.

The space bar is important and I think making it smaller is going to cause problems.

Also its the most used key, so I could easily see the Microphone button being accidentally pressed all the time!

What a nightmare ...Can we all agree that it would be better to place the Microphone button next to the Camera button !

Apple ! Please, if your listening....Change it

It's quite simple really; much like how on physical Apple Keyboards you have to hold down the caps lock key for a second or two to activate it, they could make it so you have to do the same with this. Likewise, to take it a step further, they could make it so a short tap activates the spacebar instead. Besides, in normal use, you wouldn't have the international symbol showing as well, so there would be more space bar to begin with.
