Apple Will Be Only Supplier of New Dock Connector Adapter

But WAIT! If you take advantage of this limited time offer, we'll sell you THREE iPhone cables for the price of 2.9!

Um. So where does the article state that one wont be included with the phone upon purchase?

I see a lot of people jumping to conclusions.

Will the cable be any higher quality than their current offerings? There are many third party cable suppliers that offer substantially higher quality cables at a lower cost. I find Apple's cables end up dying within 2-3 months time, I have a $2 cable that I bought on Amazon 3 years ago that is still going strong!

And one will be. No one ever said otherwise. You think Apple is going to sell a phone that can't be charged without an accessory that is sold separately? Come on.

Yes. The phone can be charged with what is included, but the adapter will not be.

I will be pissed if there isn't one in the box, but many manufacturers have been doing this for years (e.g. Batteries Not Included).

EDIT: Oh yeah, the thread is specifically about the adapter, not the cable, so never mind.

"Apple Will Be Only Supplier of New Dock Connector Adapter"

No.

Cheap adapters will be available by the bucketloads quite soon.
It will be much like past accessories: Apple will offer an expensive, convenient, fairly nice option. And there will be a massive flood of options with a huge variations in price and quality from a wide variety of places. It's just a matter of time (and not much time, really).

I look forward to purchasing cheap chinese knockoffs on ebay.

...and sticking it to the man.

...which is now Apple.

(sigh)

Two levels of hearsay and panties are in a bunch. Nobody knows just exactly what will happen for another week.

I for one will not be purchasing a knock-off adapter. Seems like a decent amount of mass to be supported by some adapter made quickly as possible next to an assembly line of fortune cookies. Just plug your headphones in and hold the phone upside-down by that connector. Does it seem like a part you would want to go cheap on?

At least there are adapter, I got drawers full of different Nokia charger and a company car with pre-fitted charger which only works with an ancient Nokia 5210 and the only way in charging different Nokia phones is cutting the thing off and solder a new plug on.

Just out of curiosity, is there any particular reason (other than it being proprietary so they can make more money) that apple cannot use a standard USB plug like every other phone in the word?

USB plugs' resilience is paid heavily in weight and bulk. You can't get rid of that fat rubber shell.

The new dock connector is double-sided (there is no up/down, just plug it in), smaller than micro-usb, very resistant (apparently), good-looking, and can double as a general purpose I/O for accessories, which is not allowed for USB.

Seems the EU cell-phone charger standard (micro USB) is gone forever...

The EU, aka GKB, standard. Government Knows Best and does best when they dictate to industry. Yep, government, they are always on the leading edge. Although, when it comes to gouging and greed, they are are the experts. I change my opinion, the govt, perhaps the UN, should dictate the cell phone/charger connector. A bunch of blue helmeted inspectors in every factory.

I can’t believe how many people are outraged by this. Complaining that they are changing the dock connector for no reason when it was most likely done to make more room for interior components. Complaining that you will have useless docks, stereos or sync cables unless you buy a $10 adapter (seems like a fair alternative if you ask me). You can say this is greed on apples part all you want but in reality how many accessories using the dock connector does apple make? They make a docking station and the sync cable. Most likely the adapter isn’t geared toward either of them as the adapter is 50% of the cost of the current cable and 33.3% of the price of the current dock. They may make royalties on each dock that works with the iphone due to licensing but that doesn’t point to greed.

If they are providing a cable that allows you to charge the phone that you purchase in the box with the phone that is where their obligation ends. They are selling (may even include an adapter in the box) to allow accessories that used the 30-pin connector to still be used so they aren’t killing any accessories that are on the market. It is the new iphone, everyone buys it because they want the newest iphone so why is having the newest dock connector on the newest iphone such a big deal. If you feel you are entitled to a free adapter do you also feel that you are entitled to a free case since the case on your iphone 4/4s doesn’t work anymore? Not to mention most cases that are sold in stores as opposed to wholesale on the internet are close to $30. It isn’t necessary to buy the new iphone if you are so against buying new accessories for the phone. The people I do feel bad for is someone who may have an integrated iphone connection in a vehicle where the new phone or new phone plus the additional height of the adapter will not work in their car due to confined spaces. Even if you have a high end stereo like a Bose the adapter is a $10 alternative to buying a brand new stereo for much more. Who is making more money in the new dock situation now apple or third party accessory manufacturers?

Sorry for the rant and I know I’ve made some enemies with this post but the sense of entitlement is outrageous. Especially when it is something like a phone which the newest isn’t a necessity no matter how you look at it.

$10 is an incredible deal really. I was expecting much more than this. Also the $29 for three discount deal will really multiply for volume purchases. Consumers will save a lot of money buying three packs over time.

How is saving $1 save you a lot of money over time?

Not at all, it's a good question.

The new $19 cable will have the new 9-pin connector on one end and a flat USB connector (USB A) on the other. Each iPhone 5 sold will include one of these cables in the box. Always have, always will.

The $10 "dock connector adapter" will have a female 30-pin socket on one end and a male 9-pin plug on the other end. It will allow your new iPhone 5 to be connected to any of your current accessories that came with a 30-pin connector/plug, including any "old" 30-pin/USB cables you probably have laying around.

Thank you for the response - very helpful. :)

Not really, it's called maximizing shareholder value. They can afford a premium over the generic adapters that will be coming out because they have good marketing and a stellar brand name. Same BS the drug companies try.

I don't know of any 'not-for-profit' computer/consumer electronics manufacturers and certainly Apple isn't one.
