When the wii came out the wrist strap string was too thin so Nintendo gave everyone a free wriststrap string and later everyone was also given a free rubber coating for the remote. This cost Nintendo millions of dollars but it kept all their customers happy. Apple should do the same.

Nintendo did that to avoid [additional] lawsuits :)

OMG. People, get a grip. The charger will come with the phone. If you want to buy an adapter so you can use your old stuff with the phone, it's 10 freaking dollars. Skip Starbucks for a day or two and you'll have the money.

I can't wait until the phone is finally up for pre-order and everyone can start freaking out about shipping times instead.

1- change dock connector for no real reason after years and years of 3rd party development under the old connector.
2- make countless accessories useless.
3- hold rights to conversion adapter forcing people to purchase the adapter from them if they want to use their several hundred dollar speaker system
4- 3rd party development will be slow to adapt to the new dock connector
5- users forced to buy the adapter so they can use their stuff

Profit?

Likely they ARE selling at near cost. A cable like this is likely NOT a simple passive device. THere is a good chance their is electronics inside the cable.

The current dock connector has no electronics, yet it is $19.

There are plenty of good reasons. USB 3, orientation-agnostic, smaller size, elimination of now-useless features (FireWire.)
2- make countless accessories useless.
That's why there will be adaptors. Unfortunately, they are a necessary evil for the sake of technological progress.
3- hold rights to conversion adapter forcing people to purchase the adapter from them if they want to use their several hundred dollar speaker system
Apple will be the only initial supplier, because they don't want to release it before it is announced. There will be nothing stopping third party companies from jumping on board after the announcement.
4- 3rd party development will be slow to adapt to the new dock connector
On the contrary. If trends continue, the iPhone 5 will be the fastest selling iPhone to date.
Third party developers will be working faster than ever to get on board.
5- users forced to buy the adapter so they can use their stuff
I agree with this one. Apple should include an adaptor in the box, at least for the first year of the transition.

Just $10??? As long as they are the only provider, why not just charge $29? Hey if you are going to gouge, might as well go all the way.

That's funny :)

Though there were a number of people who said absolutely the adapters would be $29 ... so now they're $10 and it's still too much. :D

$19 for a short little USB cable? That's just wrong. No amount of "it has higher build quality" or "Apple doesn't sell junk like Dell" can justify why a simple cable that probably costs $1 in bulk should sell for so much.

So wait, are they going to include an adapter with new devices or not? I'm looking at getting one of the new iPods but I'm not shelling out an extra ten bucks just to hook it up to devices I already have.

Hopefully they'll just ship devices with usb cable AND adapter, leaving out the latter would be an incredibly dumb move.

screw this upgrade round. I'll wait until the generation when the new dock connectors are common everywhere.
today I almost dont have to worry about carrying a charger when travelling. someones bound to have an iphone/ipod/ipad charger/usb cord/speaker dock with the connector thats been around for more than half a decade.

Calm down!!!

Sheeps read some rumor and started blaming apple.

Calm down...wait until this is official...No wonder rumor sites make money...

I dont care about the price of adapters too much. What really pisses me off is the reports of the new cables costing $19. Now THAT is too ***** expensive.

"Apple will allow"?

it's possible that Apple will allow third parties to build the adapter at a later date

Apple is so full of itself, it's disgusting.

you must be looking at a different picture. one end is clearly usb

No, I am speaking only to the part that is inserted into the phone. The current cable you can only insert the 30 pin connector a certain way (the rectangle with line in it facing the same direction as the screen). I have read that this new 9 pin connector will be able to inserted either way, with no side facing the 'right direction'. Can anyone confirm this?

That's expensive but isn't that the same price Apple has always been charging for their cables? I'm sure Chinese third parties will follow up very quickly.

I agree. But Apple can sometimes be incredibly penny pinching/greedy with the accessories - see the new MagSafe adapter, that should've been included, IMHO.

When I first read this I thought it meant the charger and the cable were going to be sold separately, but now I see that just the adapte to connect the new cable to an old device will be sold separately. I don't understand why there's a big fuss when they are doing the same with the new and old mag safe.

I'm still on 3GS, was waiting for the 5 to come out, but it looks like it will be just an Iphone 4L (l for long). Nothing new. I'm looking at Nokia. Looking really good.
