Technology still a work in progress. Apple's about 10 minutes away from phone production.

This day just gets more and more entertaining. We went from "good thing I skipped the iPhone 6SS (7) for the SUPERcycle upgrade this year!" to "OMG Apple if you get rid of TouchID then you get rid of my business!!"

Hope this is not true, but if it is I think I will pass on this iPhone and wait another generation for in screen finger print scanner technology to improve and (hopefully) be implemented by Apple. Not worth giving up the convenience of Touch ID for smaller bezels IMO, but I guess we'll see what Apple comes up with.

I don’t think it’ll be an issue honestly. While I don’t have dark skin, I regularly use Windows Hello in the dark and it unlocks instantly with my camera. I’m assuming they’ll be using similar technology since my camera uses depth also, it works frighteningly well.

But is this secure enough to be a replacement for Touch ID?

I really hope this isn't the case, because these solutions are most likely not as consumer friendly as the current Touch ID. I really thought this device would be the first phone without any major compromises, but it seems that it isn't the case.

So...if the police have your phone and want to unlock it they just point it at your face now?

yes but now it won't unlock because you set it up with a scrunched up face. Super clever apple thought of everything.

I have a hard time believing the new iPhone will do away with Touch ID. They might stick it on a button on the side or a sensor on the back. But get rid of it altogether is insane. Worse than removal of the headphone jack. It's product suicide at this point.

I have tried to use the iris scanner on my Note 7 and now on my S8+. It physically hurts my eyes. Really bad. Bad enough I won't ever use it again. It wasn't too bad the first few times but my eyes got progressively more sensitive somehow. The pain is sort of cumulative and became less easy to shrug off. The pain feels like a combination of a thump and a burn and it doesn't fade away right away.

I don't know what exactly is going on physically when the light that is used for the scanner hits my iris but I know it hurts. When things hurt, it's common sense to avoid them.

I have had an eye exam and there is no sign of damage or disease, so I'm not trying to spread FUD. I'm just saying it is uncomfortable enough for me to avoid.

facial recognition will never replace touch id. if this happens its a complete cop-out for them not having it in the display. if there is no touch id in the display it will be yet another ho-hum phone from apple.

nothing else they are doing here is new. they are playing catch up from the last 2 years of android phones.

Having to look at the phone to unlock it. If we thought phones were distractions before, WHOA BOY! Watch out!

Unlocking the phone with your hand is simple and mostly unobtrusive, even if using a passcode. Having to raise the phone in front of your face, ya... how many people are actually going to do this in a social setting, or in a meeting, driving, walking down the street, etc... Yes, some people will, but the overwhelming majority of people will likely find it awkward and will simply go back to passcodes or ditch locking their phones all together. Oh God, how awful would it be to try and unlock your phone first thing in the morning or in the middle of the nigh in the dark. Iris scanning has the same problem. I can see maybe adding something like this as an added layer, but Touch ID is still vital in making meaningful security easy for most people to implement. Take that away or make it more complicated, and you ruin the whole point.

To be fair Apple never promised a "SUPERcycle upgrade", people on this forum made it up in their heads based on hearsay and hopefulness.

You know how this seems like a really bad idea and Apple would be stupid to do this.... That's because they won't. I mean seriously, there will still be touchID on all the new iPhones. It's literally essential to the way we use our iphones. We have had it since the 5s and it won't be removed in favour of something insecure like biometric facial recognition.

No idea why everyone is losing their **** like this is really going to happen. The headphone jack removal wasn't massively surprising and not a big deal for most people. Removing the touchID would be a disaster.

How many people are actually going to follow up on the no Touch ID no buy mindset they have now? Apple could easily win people over by releasing an otherwise stellar iPhone 8.

So how would this facial recognition thing work?
Someone just picks up your phone and shoves it in your face and says "LOOK" and you being unaware and thinking they are just showing you something so you look, and it unlocks your phone and they run off with your phone unlocked and get all your info off it???
I don't get it.
There just be something else that protects from this right?

Think people have far bigger problems if they even let that happen

I'm with others who are suspicious of this tech. Short of being able to sense perfectly, from all angles, in all possible conditions, this tech should not be the sole security feature on a phone. Supplementing tID3.0, sure. But, not by itself.

So do you pre-scan your face to use it, such as when going through a drive through? It's a big enough reach already, without craning my neck out of the car window, too.

Since Apple want's everyone to buy replacements every year, they will put out the 2017 phone where you can only unlock it with a manually entered passcode. Then in one year, they will add either touch ID or face scanning and call it an amazing innovation, and add $100 to the price tag. Money grab!

Why is everybody here acting like the don't look at the screen while using Apple Pay??
Everybody is looking at the screen, and if that is sufficient to use Face ID then there is zero problems with Apple Pay.
But knowing Apple, they will have a clever solution if this would cause a problem or weird situation.
And what happened to all those complainers when Touch ID was released.
" aahhh it doesn't work with gloves..stupid Apple" (solved with Face ID)
" aaaah it doesn't work when my hand are wet or sweaty" (solved with Face ID)
" aaah it doesn't work because the button is greasy" (solved with Face ID)

regarding safety, if Touch ID for example needs 150 points to match. Facial ID will probably have double that, so twice as secure.
