Isn't the current keyboard technically Magic Keyboard 2? The first one has an eject key on the upper right corner

Wouldn't this be the Magic Mouse 3 if they've already updated it twice? We had a battery compartment, and then it was changed to have an internal rechargeable battery with a lightning port.

I actually think they might add MagSafe charging, like the AirPods Pro 2 have, with a small magnetic charging disc in the bottom. Still won't be able to use it while charging, lol, but they'll charge more for it.

The magic mouse's charging port is undeniable proof that apples cares more about aesthetics than it does functionality. Jony Ive's OCD would not allow him to put a port where one could see it, and it also didn't perform as well in the wind tunnel testing. Now that Jony is gone we are starting to see USB ports on the fronts of desktop machines and hopefully charging ports that aren't on the bottom of the mouse. I think Jony was a great innovator, but for the aesthetics vs functionality I'm glad he's gone. I remember reaching around the backside of every iMac I ever owned just to plug in a flash drive or SD card. Super aggravating.
nah, just them going for the cheapest and easiest way to convert the design for built-in rechargeable batteries when they did away with user-replaceable AAs

All of these devices should pair with more than one other devices, especially at their price points (Apple's always been a ripoff). Logitech MX Keys keyboard lets u pair between 3 different devices and switch between all with ONE keystroke (F1, F2 and F3).... tbh, that's the better keyboard anyway so nobody should be buying Apple's own keyboard.
Apple is doing a very good job with their H series chips found in the AirPods. They switch rapidly between devices. So maybe something like that could find its way into the keyboard.

I bet $100 that this will happen:

  • New Magic Mouse: everything the same, still charge from the bottom, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Keyboard: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Trackpad: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
What do I care about my assumptions? I think it’s fine. I charge my Magic Mouse like once every two months, I couldn’t care less since charging takes like an hour.

I already know you're right but I really hope they have some extra changes for the Magic Mouse or even release a "Magic Mouse Pro". I love the Magic Mouse but there are some programs that really need a traditional (and clickable) middle mouse wheel. It would be awesome if they could add that in with a more comfortable design, a few customizable "Action Buttons" and still keep the touch surface.

If we get a Magic Mouse that requires you to flip it over to charge, I'm gonna lose my mind!
So you already lost it? XD

------------------------------------------------

Anyway, I never found the port on the bottom to be an issue but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if they move it and people are happy, then cool. If not, still not an issue, the mouse charges so fast that a quick coffee or bathroom break will get you a couple hours of charge, then when you're done, plug it back in for a full charge.

I have an apple Vision Pro. I would love to be able to leave my laptop at home and I travel.

What I want is a small lightweight magic keyboard that has a trackpad built-in. I don’t
something with a separate numerical keypad that just makes it unnecessarily large

Imagine being able to use something like that on the airplane.!!
There’s this website called Amazon, with at least 50 choices for that.

*Checks site* oh yeah ok never mind, has to be made by Apple and cost a kidney lol carry on

All three need auto switching like AirPods.
This is the key feature that I'm looking to see.

It is frustrating to use my magic keyboard with my office setup and my Vision Pro because I have to remember to unpair the keyboard from my office MacBook prior to using it on the Vision Pro. It would also be quite nice to have the ability to respond to a text on my personal iPhone via the keyboard that I am actively using with my work MacBook. Currently I have to take it off of my MagSafe charger that is presenting my phone in standby mode to do this. I'd much rather just tap, faceID unlock and start typing.

I'll add my personal wish list as well:

A single device Magic Keyboard + TrackPad combo as many others have mentioned, but have it split the keyboard in half with the trackpad in between the halves with TouchID within the track pad. Extra points if the device can "fold" into a standalone keyboard and/or a standalone trackpad that's much smaller for storage while traveling such as someone using a Vision Pro on a plane/train/car. However, I'd happily settle for the simple ability to make it smaller for travel storage. Oh and FindMy UWB2 because why not

Yeah, thanks but no thanks. I'll use my Mode keyboards that are vastly better than anything Apple has producd since the Apple II's amazing keyboard. And that isn't anywhere near as customizable as my three Modes. Or look nearly as good, like the symbols from Led Zepplin's third album laser engraved into my solid copper keyboard base of my Green & Copper Sonnet.

All three need auto switching like AirPods.
Auto switching an input device, especially a keyboard, creates an awful lot of pretty crappy ways things can either fail or create security issues. It’s a bad idea

The current “plug in to easily switch” works well on the trackpad and keyboard, it’s a pain on the mouse.

The only other real options are a “tap to switch” type thing, which may be awkward with something like a keyboard, or using buttons to switch like a lot of logitech et al gear does but doesnt really fit Apple

Hopefully we’ll get Bluetooth 5.3 or maybe even 5.4 since they only update once a decade. And of course usb-c

I assume most people whining about the charge port location don't even own a Magic Mouse, because it's such a non-issue.
Erm…..no, we just don’t want to buy something with such a poor design
it makes perfect sense. the provided lightning cables in all applicable Apple products were not braided. if you plugged it in the front, your cable will damage easily after using the mouse for an hour or 2. instead they added quick charging. plug it in for less time it takes you to swap batteries and you have a working mouse. that's only if you forget to charge completely.

designers knew this.
Sure if you use apples crappy lightning cables

For as much as they charge it should have lit up like a MacBook keyboard by now. They literally just need to make a MacBook keyboard. And for that same price there is a lot of innovation they can bring to that space with proper use of LED's. Or better yet, for the full size keyboard most people depend on, use that space just above the directional keys, turn that into a touch screen that can have special buttons depending what app you are in. All the keys normally there would be on the touch screen when using it in normal mode.

Apple is doing a very good job with their H series chips found in the AirPods. They switch rapidly between devices. So maybe something like that could find its way into the keyboard.
My AirPods Pro v1 drive me up the wall with the device switching. Occasionally, I've used them with a Windows 11 work machine, when suddenly I've got a show streaming audio to my Airpods... My wife is using the iPad Air to watch a show 40 ft away, meanwhile I'm within a foot of my laptop. Further frustrating, is I only ever paired with my phone, and my Windows machine.

The iPad not being designed as a multi-user device I think is the true culprit here.. Technically that's how it is most often used in a household, so I've never understood that angle. Then again, I don't understand why they limit app refresh on the Standby screen of the phone, presuming to limit battery use, but since you need to be charging to use Standby, it doesn't make any sense either.

I still feel a need for a mouse. The trackpad feels like a hindrance. I just can't embrace it!
Interesting. I've been toying with getting a trackpad but have my doubts as to how much I would get out of it! I'd love to hear your own experience of it....

You can excuse any poor design decision this way. Every other mouse mfr figured out how to have the charging port of the front so that if you do run out of power, you can continue working, except for Apple. Coupled with the non-ergonomic flat design, MM is easily one of the worst Apple products ever designed. Maybe on purpose, to get people to use the trackpad...
My point is, I've used the MM for years and I have never had that happen. Zero times. I know it needs to be recharged every month or so, so I check every month or so.

I don't think it's a "poor design decision" at all, I think it is a user issue only, for when people rarely or never check the battery on their wireless mouse/keyboard. I have yet to be surprised by a low battery on either peripheral, and I'm not at all OCD about checking battery levels.

We all have no idea what Apple will do with their next mouse, if this report is accurate. But they pretty clearly wanted to get people to use the mouse wirelessly, all the time, which is why they put the charging port on the bottom in the first place. That philosophy may not have changed. We'll see.

They literally can't produce, market or sell new Magic accessories in the EU in 2025 unless they swap the ports to USB-C.

So this is obviously just going to be a new charging port and nothing more than that.

A reasonable best case scenario is perhaps newer Bluetooth 5.3 radios. Although, they never advertise or disclose which Bluetooth generation Magic accessories are on. So I wouldn't bet on it.

And new finishes/colors would only happen if new iMacs are dropping, and those come in new colors.

There are no iMac 24" leaks, or otherwise. So even with new USB-C Magic accessories in 2024, they won't drop in new colors.

Would be sick if they added the kind of MagSafe wireless charging that we get on current MacBooks Pro. Or charging with an Apple Watch puck.

Maybe they could add that to the top of the mouse without having a visible port?

That kind of charging in addition to USB-C on the bottom seems like a decent upgrade without altering the original design too much.

it can be on the side right? I am looking at my magic mouse, it has plenty of space to add a usb-c charging port there. Actually it can probably do 2x usb-c port. one is to charge the mouse at 15W speed and another one is to charge anything daisy chain from the mouse. wait, would it burn my palm?

I’ve always loved the aesthetic of the mouse, but hated how it fit my hand. Used it for an hour and stopped. Still have it as a back up. My wish is that they improve the ergonomics.

Magic Mouse: They really need to update this almost a decade old device. Technically, it never changed since Magic Mouse 1 in terms of design and features which makes it more than 10 years old without improvement. And who really needs a touch feature on a mouse?

Magic Keyboard: Honestly, it's fine except for the price. But they really need to add backlight.

Magic Trackpad: This is the main reason why trackpad for MacBook did not update or improve since 2015. Magic Trackpad 2 is nice but it's almost a decade old without improvements. Maybe bigger size and new features?

I think they could go wireless charging instead of USB-C as long as they can develop a charging mat which is already available from others. Replaceable battery design would be nice as well since you need to tear them apart in order to take out the battery which already ironic for Apple's green environment philosophy and they are doing so with iPhone.

I have been using the magic mouse as I actually make good use of the freeform scrolling the surface provides; I also don't mind the shape that much.

What I hate is the pointer precision (which is very low)...
So many times I have a hard time being precise with my clicks, and I'm fishing for a replacement.

Oddly enough I didn't really like the MX Master 3
