Am I in the minority that I much prefer a trackpad with Mac OS? Windows a mouse is a must, but I love the Mac trackpad.
not at all, pretty sure this a huge part of why Apple dominates the laptop industry. they’ve had the best trackpads in the game ever since they introduced unibody over 15 years ago & integration with macOS has only become tighter as the years have gone on. when people ask for a touchscreen macOS I can’t help but roll my eyes given that Magic Trackpad exists

I bet $100 that this will happen:

  • New Magic Mouse: everything the same, still charge from the bottom, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Keyboard: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Trackpad: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
What do I care about my assumptions? I think it’s fine. I charge my Magic Mouse like once every two months, I couldn’t care less since charging takes like an hour.
pretty sure this is why they’ve never bothered to change a design that’s so easy to clown on. haven’t had a Magic Mouse in a loooooong time but I remember my usage vs. charging times paralleled yours quite. if they find another place to stick the plug, all well and good I suppose…I would miss the memes tho ngl

Nine years later, it finally dawned on Apple that the charging port was in the wrong spot.

Oh wait, nevermind, they're just swapping it for USB-C.
The port placement is fine, I would argue perfect. Moving it would mess up the flow of the design. I much rather them improve the charger speed, or go wireless.

Just the USB-C change isn't enough.

The keyboards need backlighting, t-shaped arrow key and color options to buy on the store directly, the mouse needs inductive/wireless charging via a QI charging pad to remove the nonsense cable/battery issue that it has at the moment (so that way it is effectively always charged), and the trackpad at the moment is in the best shape.

All three need auto switching like AirPods.

Apple should also make a "stacked" Magic Keyboard/trackpad combo (similar in style to the way a laptop is setup) that works with the Vision Pro and any Mac etc...along with the auto switching component.

Please...Please...Don't just use this redesign to drop in USB C and nothing else

The Magic Mouse has the same sensor and wireless stack as when it was new, what 11 years later or something

I wish it was redesigned to be more ergonomic while keeping the touch gestures, and allow simultaneous left/right click

And you know what just redesign the whole thing around human hands, this silly aerodynamic bar of whittled soap has gone on long enough. I'd love something like this, keep what's good about it (macOS gestures), fix everything else. Without the dimple in this concept it could also easily be flipped around and used left or right handed with some Apple magic to auto sense which hand.

The Magic Mouse is one of the only mice that can be used by both right and left handed people. I'm not saying that shouldn't innovate or redesign, just not at the expense of that feature.

My employer sent me a Magic Mouse along with keyboard, monitor, laptop etc almost 4 years ago and I have literally never had an issue with the charging location. It holds a charge forever and it takes little time to charge.

You just have to check the mouse battery status once a month or so. But to each their own, I get that.

You can excuse any poor design decision this way. Every other mouse mfr figured out how to have the charging port of the front so that if you do run out of power, you can continue working, except for Apple. Coupled with the non-ergonomic flat design, MM is easily one of the worst Apple products ever designed. Maybe on purpose, to get people to use the trackpad...

I hope the mouse is wireless charging only just to really piss people off over something that’s been such a non-issue.
Or better yet, have the port on on the wrist side of the mouse... It'll be visible all the time, and a "tail" that will always be in the way when plugged in.

I really don't understand the issue. If your mouse dies, plug it in, take a quick 5-min potty break, and it'll be good for the rest of the day. Then plug it in during lunch or overnight to fully charge it.

Logitech MX Master 3 has the usb-c port on the front of the mouse (where it should be), you can't see the port. The mouse is also prettier than the "magic" mouse and actually comfortable.

Please know you're wrong.
The MX feels too light for my preference, and I can't use it with my left hand. Moving the charging port would disrupt the design of the Magic Mouse; placing the port on the front isn't a worthwhile trade-off, especially considering how quickly it charges and the advancements in charging technology since its initial release. While design is subjective and I personally prefer the Magic Mouse, the only change needed is switching to USB-C.

That was part of my comment you quoted

Hopefully they open up iMac colors for purchase. I’d love an orange set of peripherals.
I bought the M3 iMac last year in Yellow. There is no way I would spend money on the new peripherals just because they have USB-C instead of Lightning.I am happy to stick with the Lightning ones for the whole life of the iMac.

it makes perfect sense. the provided lightning cables in all applicable Apple products were not braided. if you plugged it in the front, your cable will damage easily after using the mouse for an hour or 2. instead they added quick charging. plug it in for less time it takes you to swap batteries and you have a working mouse. that's only if you forget to charge completely.

designers knew this.

Every other mouse in the galaxy with the port on the side or front makes even better sense. Basically you are saying that Apple designed the mouse to accomodate the cable instead of designing a cable to accomodate the mouse. That really makes no ergonomical sense to me. Designers of all the other mouses knew this.

If Apple keeps the plug on the bottom with the new USB-C mouse does it still makes sense?

I think you are mostly correct but I suspect they will also slightly change the curvature around the edge of the keyboard to differentiate the design and justify the price (in their mind of course).

Not overly keen on the slow death of the lightening port, I actually quite like the design and prefer it to USB-C. The only thing that will convince me to upgrade to a new keyboard would be backlighting.

The magic mouse's charging port is undeniable proof that apples cares more about aesthetics than it does functionality. Jony Ive's OCD would not allow him to put a port where one could see it, and it also didn't perform as well in the wind tunnel testing. Now that Jony is gone we are starting to see USB ports on the fronts of desktop machines and hopefully charging ports that aren't on the bottom of the mouse. I think Jony was a great innovator, but for the aesthetics vs functionality I'm glad he's gone. I remember reaching around the backside of every iMac I ever owned just to plug in a flash drive or SD card. Super aggravating.

I bet we get usb c and that’s it.
Magic Keyboard with Touch ID really ought to have a backlight at its current price.
I will be fine with my non-backlit, lightning charging kb for some time.
-I bought a Benq Screen Halo, for the darker moments - it's way better than backlit. It lights up some good area of the desk as well.

No new kb for along time, as I had just bought new kb and tb when they added touch-id to th kb, so I of course had to buy that. But I'm good for quite some time now.

I really wouldn't mind seeing a mouse fit for a human hand. The Magic Mouse is an ergonomic nightmare.
